We were in the same situation as everyone else - staying the night for the morning ferry, we had to stay in the first floor fan room for 35rm, cheap, but you get what you pay for. Sleeping was virtually impossible as the fan was useless, and with no windows or fresh air it turned into a sweat box. It was also very dirty - the light switch was brown with dirt!

Never again...

Got stuck in Kuala Besut, had to stay in a hotel until the morning ferry - like so many others, that hotel was Nan Hotel. It's not horrendous, but it's also not very clean - I slept wrapped in my sarong on top of the sheets. The bathroom and toilet are combined, and the size is not a millimetre more than is essential. The walls obviously hadn't been cleaned or painted for a few decades and there was a stain on the sheet (hence the sarong...)

The receptionist didn't speak much English, but to give her her due, she did try her best, and was very sweet. There's free WIFI, although only downstairs in the reception - it doesn't reach the rooms.

Quite expensive for what it is - I paid RM35 for a fan room, and I've paid less in big cities in Malaysia for much more. I guess they know that desperate travellers will pay.

All in all, it's fine for a few hours of sleep before leaving - preferably on the earliest boat available ;) Not the worst Asian hotel I've ever stayed in...

As many others we had to stay one night in Kuala Besut in order to catch the boat to Perhentian the morning after. We had no booking and we tried to get a room at Samudera which looked nicer from outside, but it was fully booked. So we went to Nan Hotel and luckily we found a room just as it started raining hard. We expected nothing and in fact we got nothing: ugly, smelly, spiders hanging over us in the toilet. Nevertheless we just wanted to find a shelter from the rain and sleep, and we found a shelter and slept. We can't really complain!

What to do? When you're on your way to the Perhentian's and you're stuck in Kuala Besut, you might as well stay at Nan Hotel. But that is the best thing there is to say about the place. It is overpriced and uncomfortable, but, hey, you'll enjoy the perhentian's even more!

Although this place is cheap, we would not stay there again. There appear to be better options in town. The staff does barely speak any english, the matresses are worn out and our bathroom was tiny and very old. No charm at all. If you decide to stay here, be sure to book an aircon room. The air is so humid and hot that our fan was nearly useless.

As I was having trouble finding up to date reviews on Perhentian Islands and Kuala Besut, here are some updates. Nan Hotel is certainly not a place you would spend more than 1 night, however it was more than adequate if you need to stay the night before hitting the Islands.
It is of course basic, but it is also clean and tidy. The accomodations are on the upper floor of the building and entry is gained by a door at the side of the main reception. You must lock it at night, and as it is an iron gate I'm not quite sure how it would fit with UK health and safty standards and access to emergency exits,..however we are talking about Asia. The room has air-con, T.V, and separate toilet and shower. Our room had towels and extra blankets..(which I needed as I hate air-con!). The bathroom is very small so once you've had a shower the floor soaking...think wet room !
I would recommend this hotel if you do have to stay over, as we spent a very comfortable night having travelled more than 30 hours to get there. We arrived at 11pm but as we had made a reservation all we had to do was ring the bell and the girl came out in her p.j's to give us the key. Photos are provided..hope it helps. It cost us appx MYR60 for the night.
