“Great pub service and value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2014 via mobile

This was the first time here with a group of friends
Very knowledgeable staff friendly and making sure we had a good night
We will be back soon and would recommend the food to everyone - it was top quality
We live locally so didn't try the bed and breakfast but that too looks good
For a full night of food wine and beer was £50 a head which we thought was great value

Stayed February 2014

From the initial welcome on Friday evening to the moment we left The George on Sunday, Jane and John made our weekend stay really special.

There was a great atmosphere in the bar when we arrived. Jane showed us to our room (Padyhame) which, like the rest of the Inn, was clean, tidy and extremely well decorated.
Jane had reserved a table for us but without any fuss slipped it back a while due to us being a tad delayed by traffic.

Dinner on both nights was great; the hot food was hot, as were the plates, a big thing for me…

It was my birthday over the weekend (the reason for our time away) and my partner had secretly arranged a cake, which Jane and her team had actually made themselves. At the height of dinner on the Saturday evening, Jane brought it out with candles, singing ‘Happy Birthday’…!

Overall the weekend was perfect; the accommodation was delightful, food excellent and the care & attention from John, Jane and their team was equisite.

If you want a relaxing place to stay, with good food and a great atmosphere, The George is absolute must. Definitely a location we intend to return to.

Room Tip: None of the rooms have baths.....

Recently fully modernised but they have forgotten that you need to keep up the maintenance as well. Nothing major wrong but lots of tiny quibbles - toilet seat was loose. toilet pan was all smeary, out of 6 light bulbs in the wall lights only two worked, what was billed as Mediterranean vegetables on the menu turned out to be carrots and parsnips, we were billed for somebody else's drinks. But the chocolate brownie was wonderful! We stayed in the room called Pooke which, although big in itself, is named after the separate toilet and shower rooms as they are decidedly pokey.

Room Tip: Beware, the toilet and separate shower rooms in Pooke are extremely pokey.

Everything about our one night stay at the George was absolutely perfect (except having to leave); the warm welcome on arrival, divine lunch & dinner (see separate restaurant review), friendly but professional staff, sumptuously comfortable bed, beautifully decorated room with a lovely view of this peaceful, pretty village and, of course, the delicious breakfast that greeted us in the morning.

This was our second visit and it definitely won’t be the last.

Room Tip: We have previously stayed in Pooke and this time were in Hilaire. Pooke is larger but both have the...

What a fabulous place! Excellent welcome and the service just continued in the same vein. Attentive staff all the way. The rooms are very well appointed with quality furnishings and linen.
The food in the restaurant was spot on. Just a shame we only stayed the one night. We will definitely go back for more!

Room Tip: Difficult to choose! But if our room is a good measure, then any of them!

We booked the George Inn on recommendation from Carr Taylor, the local vineyard, as we had a wine tasting tour. We were pleasantly surprised when we received a personal email from Jane and then John welcoming us - a v nice touch. We arrived early when John came out to greet us and off we went on our wine tour which I might add was v sparce on wine - I wouldnt receommend it if you fancy trying a few different wines! Anyway we didnt let it spoil the day. After lunch we came back to the George to check in, it was v busy but a nice atmosphere. We were taken up to our rooms which was small but well thought out. We booked a table for dinner and we were not disapointed. Food was amazing and I had the best chocolate tart I have ever eaten. Breakfast too the next morning was also v good. A very relaxing break.

Room Tip: Book a table before arriving as you may not get in!
