That is what it was from the moment we arrived. Our third visit to Orchard Farm staying in both barns . This time Tom's Barn was our choice for our short break. The snow came and made the countryside even more magical but inside all warm and cosy by the logburning stove. Marion and John were the perfect hosts and even took us under their wing when Derbyshire was without electricity. A memorable evening was had by candlelight in a cosy farmhouse kitchen, with a delicious meal cooked by Marion aided by John. Many happy memories, we will return.

We have just returned from a week's holiday at Orchard Farm.

From the vases (yes, I do vases) of fresh flowers to the welcome tray of of freshly baked cakes to go with your aprés arrival tea or coffee, to the home-made marmalade for your breakfast toast (and the loaf is also provided) to the fabulously comfortable bed and the jacuzzi bath - there is even boot dryers for when you get back from a walk in the pouring rain and your walking boots are sodden! Douglas's Barn and its companion Tom's Barn deserve their 5* rating.

We have stayed in many so-called 5* self catering cottages but Douglas's and Tom's Barn at Orchard Farm are the best bar none.

The setting is idyllic - to sit outside and hear nothing but bird song, the laughter of children and maybe the odd tractor, is heaven when you live in busy, noisy London. The whole area though is beautiful; from iconic Dovedale to the Manifold Valley - the scenery is breathtaking. Walking is easy, with waymarks everywhere - and there is no need to get lost as Douglas's Barn has a whole shelf of walking guides. But beware! The local form of stile often incorporates a 'squeeze' - two upright stones with the narrowest of gaps to get through - tricky after a good meal at one of the good gastro pubs in the area.

Your hosts and owners, Marion and John live on site and always have time for a chat - otherwise, they leave you to enjoy their little piece of paradise. Nothing is too much trouble for them - if you have a problem with anything in your barn, tell them and it gets sorted out quickly.

So good and comfortable is the accommodation that we decided to stay 'home' and enjoy the surroundings on a few days.

Our week in Douglas's Barn flew by - and we really didn't want to leave. The good thing is we can book to go again. Yippeee!

Room Tip: A wonderful romantic retreat - just bring the Champagne.

We have just returned from our first week at Tom's Barn, and within 2 days had booked another week later in the year, this time giving Douglas's Barn a try. Orchard Farm is the perfect location for a relaxed cottage break surrounded by beautiful, peaceful countryside. Yet the "mod cons" of Ashbourne, Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton are nearby, and the local pub is a 5 minute walk away. John and Marion are perfect hosts - striking the ideal balance between friendly attention and availability but never intruding on their guests. Nothing is too much trouble for them, from their extremely efficient booking service to the promptness with which they deal with any concerns or problems. The cottages have been thoughtfully and tastefully equipped to an extremely high standard and ours was spotless on arrival. As Tom's Barn welcomes dogs, it was pleasing, as a non-dog owner, to find no evidence that this was the case. Not a doggy hair anywhere! Extras such as fresh flowers, dressing gowns and a prettily laid tea tray awaiting our arrival and essential supplies such as olive oil, and cling film made this self-catering break a breeze - no need to bring your own kitchen with you.
If you are looking for the best, look no further.

Room Tip: Check the photos on the website and discuss the difference between the cottages with John and Marion...

We booked a short break in Douglas's Barn based on a review in one of the Sunday papers, and could not have made a better choice! Marion and John are fantastic hosts, without ever intruding, and the cottage has absolutely everything you could wish for in a country cottage. The quality of the furnishings and appliances are second to none, and the whirlpool bath was a fantastic extra. We particularly enjoyed the homemade cake on arrival, and were over the moon to find little extras like coffee, tea, milk, eggs and bread already tucked away in the kitchen.

Parwich is a beautifully peaceful village and could not be better located for peace and quiet, although it is only a short drive to Buxton or Ashbourne, and is even within an hour of Derby or Manchester if you so wish. The only criticism of the whole trip was that so many of the National Trust and English Heritage attractions in the area were not open at the time we visited (early February), but this certainly did not disctract from a very enjoyable and relaxing time in the Peak District.

Room Tip: If you have a dog they will only be welcome in Tom's Barn.

We spent a wonderful relaxed week at Douglas's Barn over Christmas. The Barn is welcoming, cozy and nothing has been overlooked. It's situated in a stunning location with plenty of exploring to be done around the area but some days we were quite happy to stay in and relax in a home from home. The Netbook is a great idea with links to local places and things to do. The butcher in Tissington is well worth a visit as is the pub in Parwich. Douglas's Barn is definitely on our list of places to re-visit. Thanks to Marion & John for making us feel very welcome.

Presumably you've arrived here because you are looking for outstanding accommodation in the Peak District - then Congratulations because you have struck gold! Toms and Douglas's Barns are just amazing. Don't hesitate - book it and go! We just spent a week in Douglass Barn and it was simply WONDERFUL. You could not wish to meet nicer people than John and Marion, or have a warmer welcome - music playing, fire flickering and homemade cake await you. When you step into the cottage you will feel like you are the first people to be there, it is absolutely immaculate. We did not want to leave and cannot wait to go back!
