“suited our needs perfectly”
Reviewed 11 June 2011

We arrived by bus from San Jose in mid afternoon. The bus stops in Flamingo but the hotel sent a taxi down to collect us. That was our first experience of the dry gray dusty roads in Guanacaste. Check in was smooth, and a fruit cocktail drink presented after check in.

The room, in the grounds on the hotel had two double beds. It was big, clean, great bathroom, & in lush surroundings. The breakfast area had a view of the ocean its more of a wide bay with 2 islands on the near horizon.
The beach itself was a brown sand beach, used by locals and visitors alike.
It was peaceful and not crowded, but never empty no matter the time of day.
You could easily walk 30 minutes one way, or 30 minutes the other way early in mornings or after 3.30pm to avoid the intense direct sunlight and take in the views and sights all around. Don't underestimate the power of the tropical sun here if you're fair skinned.
There were small local restaurants along or just off the beach either side of the hotel.

But the hotel own dinner service at night was pretty good too.
The meals were cooked to perfection and the menu varied too.
However the breakfast menu was always the same & thus the choice quite limited if you don't eat eggs. But the waiters did their best to conjure up something different for me.

One thing I would say is the waiters were pretty good at their job (all the staff are) when asked they told you locally what's going on, what is where, what to avoid, where else to dine, they were good ambassadors for the local community, their advice was useful and accurate too.

We stayed 3 days, each day was charming, the guests were from Ireland, Europe, North America, Brazil and of course local Costa Ricans too, a nice mix. The small village of Protero was nice too, but walking along the dusty roads was an endurance. It is hot and dry here in this part of Costa Rica a world away from San Jose.

The photographs I have are all on film, but the ones already submitted are accurate and anything I could contribute would be scenic shots - not of the hotel itself or facilities.
Overall the hotel suited our particular needs and I'm glad we found it and stayed there.

We selected the Bahia Del Sol Resort for our destination wedding without ever having been there (or Costa Rica) and we were not dissapointed.
As with all brides, I was a little stressed (and crazy) in the days leading up to our trip to Costa Rica, but within minutes of arriving at the Bahia Del Sol, you can not help but be relaxed and confident that everything is in good hands.
Within a few hours of being at the resort it seemed that all the staff new us by name and were always ready and quick to help us with whatever we needed.
Planning the wedding with Roxana, the resort's wedding coordinator, was quite easy, there was definitely no need to hire an outside wedding planner. most of the wedding planning was done via email and Roxana was always quick to respond.
Unlike some larger, cookie-cutter type resorts at the Bahia you can add your own personal touches to your wedding and the resort is happy to accomodate. The resort grounds are beautiful and a perfect setting for a tropical paradise wedding, there is little need for decoration at the wedding site, but what decorations were placed were perfect and were locally aquired (a lot from the resort grounds) the resort did an awesome job at setting up our wedding site, it was everything I hoped for and more!
We held both our rehearsal dinner and wedding dinner at the resort and for both we were blessed to have Fransisco as one of our servers. Fransisco is amazing, he remember everyone's names, what kind of drinks they liked and has an outstanding ability to know exactly what you wanted two minutes before you even knew you wanted it. Thank you Fransisco!
About the resort: We stayed for two weeks with some of our extended family and general concensus was that everyone loved the resort.
The resort is always clean and beautiful.
The food at the restaurant is fantastic and if you have the pleasure of having Carlos or Yariela as your servers you will be well looked after. They are fantastic, friendly people who obviously love what they do.
Mikol and Vanessa at the front desk are knowledgable and helpful in booking tours or recommending other restaurants. We actually found ourselves hanging out at the front desk just to talk to Mikol, he is a riot!
If there was one thing that I would say needs some work, it would be the reservation system / department. Everything did work out in the end, but it did seem to take a bit of effort to make sure that the bookings by us and our family was in line with the arrangements we had made.
I could go on and on about how amazing our wedding was, how beautiful the resort is and how fantastic the staff are. The Bahia Del Sol is a special place and we would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

The Bahia del Sol hotel was a beautiful building located in a tropical paradise. There are no ocean view rooms that I could tell, but we didn't mind becasue all you see were tropical trees, flowers, and wildlife (monkeys in trees and on our deck). We were lucky enough to get a great deal on a two-bedroom suite, which was absolutely perfect for me, my husband and our two boys (twins beds in their room). Each bedroom had its own bathroom, and the living/dining/kitchen area was huge! Plus we had a private deck area with outside furniture - which we enjoyed a lot. Food was limited, but good (only one restaurant). Get to the breakfast buffet early because the local ants found the delicious food after a while. Service was great - we even ordered some lunches to eat in our room and before I could go retrive them, the staff brought them them up tp us, no extra charge that I could tell. Either way it was appreciated ! The hotel was primarily older vacationers, but we did see a few other families with small kids. And no one treated us any differently becasue our boys (8 and 10) were with us. The beach was wonderful, and our boys spent many a days out there rather than the pool. I recommend The Shack for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks if so inclined to walk a block down the dirt road. Looks like nothing to write home about, but the atmosphere and food was great! One of our favorites! There is also a small grocery store on that same block of road - very convenient. We also enjoyed a sunset snorkeling cruise while at Bahia del Sol. It was called the Hibiscus, and it is docked just a short walk down the beach from the hotel. And we surfed with Point Break surf. Matt picked us up right at the hotel. Both are very, very highly recommended - see TripAdvisor for both activities as well. So overall, a beautiful, relaxing hotel. No real night life in the area which was fine with us. There were a few weekend nights of loud music from a bar near-by, but it didn't spoil the trip. PS - Mik was wonderful, pleasant, attentive, responsive, etc. I will definitely recommend this hotel, and tell Mik that Stephanie from NY said "hi".

Room Tip: Check the specials on their website.

My wife, brother-in-law and sister-in-law just returned from a week at the Bahia del Sol. It is located a few miles down a dirt road from Brasilito, right on the beach near the small village of Potrero. We loved the quiet location – at any given time, there were less than a dozen people on the entire ~5 mile stretch of Playa Potrero. Often times we had the entire beach to ourselves.

The hotel itself was great - we stayed in a 2-bedroom suite, and although we didn’t spend too much time in the room, it was clean, comfortable, and perfect for our needs. The hotel grounds were beautiful and well maintained. We spent a lot of time at the pool, restaurant and swim up bar – the food/drinks were great and the staff was super friendly – by mid-week almost everyone who worked there knew us by name.

We did several tours booked through the hotel – surfing lessons with Harlan (Toes to the Nose Surf School) and the Palo Verde boat tour, where we saw lots of crocodiles, birds, iguanas, and howler/capuchin monkeys. Would highly recommend both, especially the surfing (see my other review for Toes to the Nose surfing).

There are several good restaurants within walking distance – Las Brisas is about 1.5 miles down the beach, and has really good ceviche and sashimi. Maxwell’s is more of a local hangout playing good reggae music, with a pool table, jenga, and some tasty patty melts. El Coconut, right next door to the Bahia, was never very crowded but had excellent seafood.

All in all, we were extremely happy with the Bahia del Sol and Potrero, and will likely be coming back.

Our stay at Bahia del Sol was just what our work weary bones needed. From the welcome drink, the private dinner by the beach, and the fabulous personal service, the staff at Bahia del Sol made our week long adventure memorable. Maik at the front desk quickly remembered our names and made sure that our needs were taken care of and offered up great reccomendations of where to go and what to do. He never failed to deliver.

This comfortable property is ideally situated on a long stretch of beach within a 20 minute walk of Playa Flamingo and proximal to a variey of restaurants and bars in Playa Portrero. The rooms were clean and well decorated and staff couldn't have been more helpful. The pool, while small, is perfect for floating and has a convenient swim up bar. Gardens were well manicured.

The restaurant serves a complimentary breakfast buffet which was very good and consisted of fruit, rice and beans, eggs, sausage and a variety of pastries. The restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner. The food was pretty good, although not exceptional. Ceviche was sub-par.

The village where Bahia resides is small, quaint town called Portero and has an "old west cowboy" feel to it. The Shack is an excellent, friendly, no frills bar with better than expected food (try the meatloaf sandwich) and is located about 200 yards from the Bahia. Las Brisas, which is 1km down the beach has excellent food, but beware of the specials for which they do not list the price. The fried shrimp plate for example ended up costing $25 - exceptionally high for this area.

Should you stay at the hotel during one of the local fiestas, there is a good chance you'll be awaken by thumping bass coming from either a house party or from one of the nearby restaurants. As I understand it, this is a common occurance in practically every town in Costa Rica so unless you are staying in an entirely remote area, there isn't much one can do to escape this. It is what it is and shouldn't deter folks from staying at the Bahia.

All in all it was a great stay!!!

Surfing note: Should you decide to take surfing lessons, you may want to avoid booking this through the hotel. They set me up with an expat who ended up picking me up in his beat up jalopy which was ridden with trash, sans AC, and generally filthy. The surfboard he provided was old, secured with duct tape, and did not provide the ideal type of board to learn on (wasn't soft and not long enough). He wasn't the most pleasant either, and insisted on smoking in the car.
