Damp, cold room

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 Mar 2019via mobile
We had a dated room with damp walls. It was cold and unpleasant. The breakfast was plentiful but unremarkable. On the plus side it's in a good location for the Shilin night market. Would not stay here again.

We attended to a special event and our group booked at this property which is located approx 40kms from Taoyuan International Airport. We arrived around lunch time and we waited check in time at 330pm. While waiting we ate at their restaurant located near the gate. The property has nothing fancy since it is like a student campus, there are teaching halls and students are roaming around. They have vendo machines with drinks and snacks located at the lobby and on the 4th floor. A convenience store located near the lobby open until 9pm. I booked 2 double beds room (Monarch Room) and we got rooms 1901 and 1902 located on the 9th floor.
The rooms we got are clean, beds are comfy, with hot and cold shower, complimentary basic toiletries, and a kettle. Both rooms have an amazing view of the Grand Hotel Taipei especially at night!

The nearest MRT station is Jiantan which is a good 25 mins walk, so if you are travelling with elderly and planning to visit attractions by train you might want to consider a property closer to the MRT station. If you have an Easycard you can find a Youbike station near the hotel compound. Closest 24 hour convenience store is a good 7 mins walk. At around 6pm you can visit Shilin Night Market, an interesting place that offers a variety of street food, clothes, accessories and souvenirs.
If you booked the double decker tour from klook the bus stop (blue route) is just near the MRT Jiantan station.
The staff at the hotel communicates with basic english. Our friends staying at different rooms on other floors kinda complaint about their rooms being old and dusty but ours was fine, so I strongly recommend to request those on the higher floors.
If you booked a room with complimentary breakfast, they will give you coupons and reakfast is from 7am to 9am, better be there early for more food choices as there are many guests. One thing I have to point out is that i informed the frontdesk that i will be checking out at 6am and on the day I checked out they gave me complimentary boxes with pastries and iced tea, which I didn't expect and it was a nice gesture from the staff.
Overall, I can say that I had a nice stay, i will choose a property closer to the station next time but if you don't mind walking 20 mins back and forth to the station this is a good choice especially if you are a looking for a clean and budget friendly hotel.

The location is near Shilin Night Market, but it is a good 10-15 minute walk to the Jiantan MRT station. The rooms are older and look worn down; the walls are dirty, and the bed sheets have hairs and stains on them. The breakfast at the restaurant on the second floor is ok, but the food can get repetitive after a few days. Also, be aware that there may be cockroaches or spiders on the walls, and the staff speak limited English, so it may be best to book online. Overall, the hotel (or hostel) has its flaws, but it is definitely worth the cheaper price.

My wife was attending a reunion for Chientan languange school (which she attend 20+ years ago) so it is very convenience to stay here as well. Book a family room and I got 4 single bed with 2 bunk bed for the 5 of us (2 adults and 3 children). Bed is comfortable although quite hard. We got 2 basin, 2 showers and 2 toilet ensuite so it is perfect for us. They have a pantry in every floor which provide hot water, microwave, and vending machine. Breakfast is OK but the food is the same for our 3 night there. Location is not really down town but it is only 8 mins walk to Jien Tan MRT station and 12 mins walk to Shilin night market. One word of caution is that the family room does not inc a towel and you have to rent them for small amount of NTDollar. In my case, they provide it for free as we are part of the reunion there that book many rooms. Taipei hotel can be very expensive now a days.

The location is great, near Shihlin night market, and easy access to hiking trails and lots of greenery. The MRT (Chientan stop on the red line) is very convenient. Look for the exit that specifically has a sign for Chientan Youth Activity Center (I believe it's exit No. 2) . Walk under the overhead MRT tracks up a slight hill, away from the Shilin Night market, you'll see lots of YouBikes (bike share dock), walk through a small park; it offers a bit of a short cut, and is nicer than walking along the main drag of the busy Zhongshan North Road. The very grand Grand Hotel is visible from the property, and with the money you save by staying at Chientan, perhaps consider splurging on coffee/tea or a meal at the Grand Hotel. At the very least, take a look around the Grand (its open for tourists to do just that). The grounds of Chientan are nice, and the rooms are clean, but it all has a sort of tattered, lots of wear-and-tear kind of feel and look to it, from the rugs in the hallway, to the curtains in the room, to the general shared facilities, like the shared mini- kitchens, and cafeteria. But it is completely acceptable and serviceable for what it is, a hostel-ish type venue that houses many different groups from around the world (including student groups from all over Taiwan), and hosts large events for church groups, non-profits, etc. The included breakfast buffet is fine, not great, but again, it does the trick. Be sure to get there early, don't wait until 9 am or close to 9 am (when it closes) - because there may be very little left. That happened to me on a few occasions. Front desk staff and cleaning staff were all very personable and helpful. I speak Chinese, which helped a lot. The front desk folks seemed to have limited English, as others have noted. One cautionary note re transportation to the wonderful National Palace Museum (NPM), which is not far away and beautifully situated -- the bus they recommend, the 304 bus that leaves from the Chientan MRT station works great on the way to the museum (about a 20 min ride). It's a straight shot and the last stop is the NPM so you won't miss it. But on the way back, the 304 does NOT stop at the Chientan MRT station! (The Chientan front desk folks did not mention this "detail.") On the way back, take the 304 bus to the Shihlin MRT station -- you'll notice a lot of people get off here. This is the stop that connects you to the MRT. Then take the MRT (red line) one stop to the Chientan station. The 304 bus goes elsewhere, nowhere near Chientan, on its way back into town. So be sure to get off at the Shihlin MRT bus stop!

Chientan Youth Activity Center served as a venue for an international student congress I attended, and thus I stayed here for several nights.

The premises are quite nice, a pond and a green lawn in front of the housing buildings. The center is easily reachable by foot from Jiantan MRT statuon and several buses stop right around the corner. It is also a walking distance away from the Shilin Night Market. There are several 7-11s in the viscinity.

The English skills of some of the staff are somewhat lacking, and in the case of the night guards in the lobbies of some of the housing buildings non-existent, but they are all very friendly and willing to help you even if you do not have a common language.

The interiors were quite clean and constantly being cleaned, but you can see some wear and tear. The room I stayed was for two, spacy enough for the two people to share with separate beds and a bathroom. The room had a decent AC, as did the whole facility.

The breakfast was served rather early, finishing by 9 am, and consisted mainly of noodles, some sort of meat, some Taiwanese/Chinese vegetables and of sortments of pickled and dried foods. There was also some white bread and toast served with margarine, jam, peanut butter and chocolate spread. The food was good enough, but quite different from European perspective.

I enjoyed the stay and I think it worked quite well for the congress. There are probably several cleaner and more "fresh" places in Taipei for the same money if one is looking only for a place to accomodate.
