“Treated like Royalties”
Reviewed 24 November 2012

After a six day travel with a hired car driven by excellent Josalito (09395155670), correctly proposed by the Bayleaf Intramuros Hotel in Manila, we arrived at the southern end of Leyte in Tangkaan, a village near Padre Burgos, where the Castle is. We were received by the owners Delia and David and the four Girls in Scottish attire. The latter would take well care of us during our stay. The room was spacious with the best bed we had in years. The decoration and cleanliness are of a high standard, seldom found. The meals prepared under supervision of Delia were very good as for taste, variety and quantity. My wife and I would share the dishes. After a number of steps a beautiful coral beach below the Castle is reached. To reach the water is doable, not too easy but when there, the shallow reef in front is a snorkelers paradise. The diving I did was well organised. The WiFi is adequate.

Took us a while to get there via the worlds slowest ferry but once there felt very special. First night arrival to have a drink by ourselves overlooking the water was special. Couldnt hear traffic, just the the occassional fishing boat chugging by.
We did the whale shark tour. Was a bit early in the season and we didnt find any, but found lots of dolphins and played with them. Beautiful lunch, some snorkelling, a good day out.
Next day hired a motorbike and swam in some nearby waterfalls, went to a karoke bar for lunch, just a down to earth experience.
Can't say enough about the effort Delia and David put in to take care of us. We found the food great, especialyl remembering it is not downtown Cebu. Getting supplies must be very difficult, yet it was served up as though it was nothing.
Really admire what Delia and David have achieved with their resort. Its quiet, a bit out of the way, but an amazing standard of hospitality and perfect for us. Would love to go back sometime mid whale shark season.

We arrived at this resort having informed the proprietor David (who runs the resort with his wife Delia) of our pending stay.

We were checked in efficiently and offered a choice of room as we were the only guests. we chose Room 1, which was huge.

The resort overall including Room 1 has a very high standard of construction, fixtures and fittings. The room was of a most generous size with beautiful tiling throughout the bedroom and to a lesser extent the bathroom.

Lighting was good with a pair of downlights in the bedroom adding to ambience.

The airconditioner was not quite the quietest I have experienced but it could not be described as 'noisy.' It did not interfere with my sleep and efficiently cooled the room (not that it was overly humid) although I doubt that it would have cooled the bathroom.

The bed was very comfortable: a choice of pillows was available. Bedside tables and lamps were provided.

there was a great dressing table along with a huge wardrobe in which the helpful 18 year old female staff Jenny May or Janet placed our belongings. There was also a chair by the door along with a small multi layered table near the bathroom on which a kettle, tea, coffee and the two free bottles of water stood.

There was a nice window in the main room which had excellent quality tasseled curtains that effectively blocked out light, something of which I am always appreciative.

The bathroom had a Nippon instant water heater that worked well although I prefer mains hot water. Unlike my country with its natural gas, Philippines uses electricity for water heating so it becomes expensive.

The shower was reasonable: the room lacked a bath.

Lighting over the bathroom vanity unit was provided by a fluro lamp but it failed to highlight my face while shaving due to the lack of a small window in the bathroom. This was one of hardly any design flaws as a layman that I noticed.

Separate bathroom and beach towels were provided and of excellent quality. A small sachet of shampoo and a separate one of conditioner were provided on our first night but not thereafter. The bathroom had a soap dispenser over the vanity unit.

The guests' area was magnificent with a beautiful lounge (plasma TV - there not being any in the rooms) and comfortable lounge suites. There were three or four tables accommodating four persons inside while smaller round tables were around one side of the well designed though fairly small (but very clean and easily accessed) pleasant pool where the water temperature was ideal.

The bar area was stylish with woodgrain prominent. Better lighting was over the bar than elsewhere as the high ceiling reduced lighting in the general guests' area.

The guests area also had a concrete wall separating it from Rooms 1 to 3, with wood overlaying the concrete. It looked timeless and stylish.

The pool was complemented by a mango and a jackfruit tree. Birds frequented some of the trees.

For the off season price of P3600 a double the continental brekky could be improved given that at similar prices in Metro manila, hotels sometimes serve extensive buffets. Toast and jam , Corn Flakes plus either mango and not very nice orange slices (or fruit juice) plus tea or coffee was the brekky: insufficient for many guests although I am not a big brekky eater.

We enjoyed one meal at night (P1200 a head). Contrary to the previous reviewer, I found Delia's cooking to be excellent though I cannot claim gourmand status. We had two impressive, large tasty lumpia (spring rolls), a main of five huge king prawns plus a good selection of vegetables including interesting presentation of the capsicum with a very filling 'mango float' (a cakey confection) as dessert plus two small chocolates and tea or coffee.

We went on an excursion to Limasawa Island which included a lunch cooked on it by chef for the day Meredith. Hungarian sausage, lovely grilled chicken and grilled fish plus fresh pineapple and watermnelon and as many bottled soft drinks or water as we wanted were included. The excursion included a visit to the site of the first Filipino Catholic Mass (400 steps to the Cross) which was great along with snorkelling both off Limasawa island (access from the shore) and near the resort (both were enjoyable). The excursion was fairly expensive for Philippines at P2750 per person for each of our party of three, but it involved the two boatmen coming from Limasawa island. It was fairly choppy on the way back.

We extended out stay to become three nights.

Upstairs, Room 5 is interesting as it has a view, mostly over the roof.

I did not snorkel at the resort's small cove which lacked sand at this time of the year: apparently the sand, like MacArthur, 'will return.'

This is a quality small resort of which David and Delia can be proud. At its low season price of P3600 a night (bed and continental brekky) it is excellent value: even in high season at P4600 a night it compares well given that one may receive 'exclusivity' which is not really available in overrated Thailand (think Phuket), Bail or Fiji. You won't bump into hundreds of your countrymen in Padre Burgos if you are a foreigner, but you may (and if Australian will) in the other competitor locations mentioned.

Staff were pleasant but could do with a little more training. Neither girl knew what English Breakfast tea was: one brought out the available Lipton including horrid, bitter Earl Grey.

One final point: there is no nearby karaoke or roosters crowing to disturb guests here, while David plays Beethoven in the bar at brekky and 60s to 70s pop quietly at night.

.

Room Tip: Room 1 may be the largest: Room 5 up the spiral staircase is smaller.

Thank you so much for your visit and your extremely comprehensive review.

We are very happy that you enjoyed your Limasawa Island Tour. These are private tours for very small groups (minimum 2 people) and include dolphin watching, snorkeling at 2 excellent sites, marine sanctuary fees, snorkeling equipment, First Mass entrance fees, barbecue lunch in a cottage on a superb beach, hot and cold drinks with biscuits on the boat. Guests are accompanied by 2 boat crew, a chef and a guide and the programme is tailored to each group’s specific wishes.

There are many other options to enjoy superb snorkeling at a range of top class sites which can be reached on foot, by road or by kayak. Snorkelers can also accompany groups of scuba divers to locations best accessed by motor boat.

Your shampoo should have been replenished each day and we are very sorry for that oversight.

Thank you, once again, for your detailed and informative feedback.

I stayed at the Padre Burgos Castle Resort for five nights so that I could do some scuba diving with Peter's diving. I was looking for some comfortable accomodation of a standard that was a bit above the usual.
The owners of the resort, David and Delia, and all the staff, were very polite, hospitable and courteous throughout my five night stay. The transport to and from the airport and Peter's diving was prompt, comfortable and simple to arrange with the owner.
The grounds of the Padre Burgos Castle Resort are very tidy and well-manicured and the property itself is kept meticulously clean. It is clear that the owner has invested in the property’s infrastructure and its maintenance. There is a nice swimming pool in the garden with impressive views overlooking the sea. There is access to the sea for swimming and boating etc. via a footpath and steps. The beach is small and private with some sun loungers and seating areas both made out of natural materials. Entrance to the sea is over a small rocky ledge, which is a bit precarious, especially when there are waves breaking on the shoreline.
I stayed in the round room that was located at the top of the tower housing the entrance foyer. Entrance to the room was via a small spiral staircase through the ceiling, which met a small door providing access to the room in a sort-of hobbit-like fashion. The room was very well decorated with a modern wall-mounted air-conditioning unit. There wasn’t a refrigerator/mini bar, television set or security safe. I would have expected these as standard fittings in a room of this price. The bed was very comfortable with modern duvet and pillows. I would suggest that the owner puts a label on the remote switch for the electric shower and repair the broken fan in the bathroom.
There is a communal television lounge with a flat-screen television, satellite channels and a very good selection of DVDs. The seating area for food and drink is split between the internal restaurant area, which is tastefully tiled, and outside in the garden.
Whenever I stay in a hotel/resort that offers “exquisite” food I always order something simple like poached eggs as it is a great way to check the chef’s competence before I delve into the menu. The poached eggs were so overcooked that I immediately returned them. In fairness to the chef I eventually got some eggs that were cooked 90% right but only after I advised the waitresses how a poached egg should be cooked (there is only one way!). The following day I ordered scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages. All were overcooked. I asked about the “sandwich selection” and was advised that there were only egg sandwiches available, so I declined. However, the fresh fruit was excellent and delicious. Sorry David and Delia but the cooked food that I tasted was below par even when applying a correction factor for the resort's location and availability of ingredients. And I don't usually complain. I only had a few simple drinks from the bar and the price was very reasonable.
The resort is located about 2km away from the town of Padre Burgos and it is relatively easy to get a motorcycle taxi (hable-hable) to the town. It can be a bit difficult arranging a ride back to the resort anytome after 9pm so best to arrange a return trip with the hable-hable driver beforehand.

Thank you so much for your detailed comments, and giving us the opportunity to respond and clarify certain matters.

It is such a pity that you confined your food orders to breakfasts and did not try dishes such as our beef calderita, lovingly slow cooked for several hours, or huge king prawns served with milk freshly made from home grown coconuts, or kanilaw, a Filipino version of sashimi prepared from the day’s fresh catch of fish. We have a very extensive menu, and on one previous occasion served 4-course dinners to guests staying for 19 nights without repetition. Poached eggs, however, are not on the menu as we have never prepared them before and we are very sorry that our efforts to meet your special request fell short of your expectations. In this beautiful unspoilt corner of the Philippines, western style sandwich fillings are not available but we can offer fresh chicken, prawn or other cooked fillings for sandwiches, although these do take time to serve. Your tuna sandwich was prepared for your delayed arrival at 11pm, long after the restaurant had closed, and regrettably egg is the only other sandwich filling available at short notice. Other options for light snacks include our pork and vegetable spring rolls or beef burgers with potato salad – all homemade, of course.

To avoid any confusion regarding your room in the Castle tower, this is accessed by a spiral staircase 75cm (30”) wide and through a door of standard size – 210cm (6’ 11”) high and 80cm (31”) wide. As you did not inform us of the problem with the fan in the bathroom during your stay we were unable to show you that it operates perfectly well and is controlled by a single switch, which also isolates the shower heater, as we explain when we check guests into their rooms.

What we hope to convey through our marketing is the ‘get-away-from-it-all’ nature of staying here in an unspoilt, peaceful location with exceptional marine life combined with superb local cuisine, and stimulating activities. Our Family Room is equipped with a flat screen TV and DVD player to keep children entertained, and we also have DVD systems available for use at a nominal fee, although the vast majority of our guests prefer to escape from ‘the box’ during their vacations. Of course, many guests do like to keep in touch with friends, family, business and current affairs and as well as communal satellite TV the resort offers free Wi-Fi internet connection, while mobile telephone reception is excellent on the Smart network. All our 5 guest rooms are located in the Castle building together with and very close to the restaurant, bar and TV area and for the few people who like to have cold drinks available when the bar is closed we provide well stocked cool boxes on request – which means there is no noisy fridge compressor keeping you awake at night.

Thank you once again for your useful feedback.

We chose to stay for 10 days in this little paradise in Southern Leyte for our honeymoon. Looking for a mixture of diving and relaxing, I have to say it was fantastic. We dived most days in the morning with a partner dive operator (Peter's) and were ferried to and from the dive shop to allow us to do so at no extra charge. Our room in the tower was fantastic, and the food excellent. By far the best food we had during our stay in the Philippines. I would thoroughly recommend the half-board option, though don't arrive with tight fitting clothes as you will be fed so much you may very well need an extra hole in your belt by the time you leave!

All in all the place was lovely, the service was impeccable and the whale-shark / snorkelling trip absolutely awesome. I would definately recommend doing the whale shark trip with David, enjoying the fantastic BBQ lunch and not being in amongst a huge crowd when the other dive operators all turn up at once.

All in all, excellent. Thanks David, Delia and Castle's very own resident princess Nikka.

Room Tip: Take the tower!

We have stayed at a few resorts in the Philippines now and this by far is the best resort we have stayed at that is locally owned. The rooms are clean and modern, the food is wonderful (worth the half board). So many S.E.Asian hotels try to build a menu with a little of everything and in turn get nothing right. They have a simple but supurb menu here that should please the pickest Westerner (and the portions will satisfy a Westerner). Yes, you will pay for it, but we don't put a price tag on comfort and cleanliness! We brought our 3 small children and they had a wonderful time. The owners arranged for a yaya (sitter/childminder) to assit us while we were on our whale-shark tour and the children had a blast! At the resort, There are plenty of hermit crabs for the kids to catch down by the water and the pool has a perfect view!

They went out of their way to make sure that we had what we needed (even going to town to buy bananas for the baby)! This is not just a Whale Shark tour either, we were out all day, we saw the Whale-Sharks, more dolphins than I have ever seen before, the best site for snorkling I have seen yet. You can stop at Limisawa island to see where Magellan held the first mass in the Philippines. BBQ Lunch, hot and cold drinks are provided during the tour. The owner, David is there with you to make sure that your trip is worthwhile.

Many thanks!!

Room Tip: Don't hesitate to send the owners a message or call if you have questions! They are very helpfu...

The most is already said by other reviewers. I fully agree:-) Stayed here for a week in the beginning og April with my family (wife and kids 3 + 6). The quality of the service, rooms, facilities and food is above what you usualy find in the Philippines. Equal to upscaled resorts in Boracay, but without the crowd and size. Really botique style. The whaleshark trip was great, with a lot of whalesharks. http://youtu.be/Ou3qfMPnGsY. I did not bring my family, because I thought it would be a too long trip. ( but they had their share in Oslob. Oslob is not as good as this, but easy accessable)
The price of accomodation and food is above what you are used to in the Philippines, but worth the price. My only negative comment about prices is food for the kids, that I think is overpriced. The whaleshark trip is expensive but it is in its own league. Other trips is overpriced, like 2500 peso for snorkeling trip to Limasawa. So you have to be really kean to pay 7500 pesos for a snorkeling trip in the Phlilppines. In Bohol you can rent a big boat for a day for 1300 pesos. Another detail, add some eggs to the breakfast, and it's perfect.
I stayed at the Castle for one week, and that was the end of our 3 months journey, so I was on a kind of budget. But as an experienced Philippine visiter I think my price comments would be the same even on a regular vacation. Anyway, I still give the Castle full score, and David & Delia is the best hosts you can get.

Thank you so much for your detailed feed back which we find very helpful and encouraging. When we offer tours for snorkeling and, seasonally, for watching whale sharks, we too have to hire crewed motor boats at the local commercial rate. We are amazed to learn that you hired in Bohol an all-day crewed boat with fuel costs for only 1300 pesos (24 Euros, $30). We do wish we could hire in Padre Burgos at these rates!
As you didn’t actually do the Limasawa Tour you may be unaware that far more than a ferry service is provided, and at an inclusive cost. You depart early morning from our own beach and you snorkel at two really magnificent reefs with marine sanctuary fees covered and snorkeling equipment provided. But that is not all. It includes dolphin watching and a visit to the site of the first Christian mass in Asia. Also included is a delicious barbecue lunch freshly prepared at the Island beach by our own cook who also serves soft drinks, tea, coffee and biscuits on board, at your pleasure. On return to our own beach in the late afternoon, you will be in time for a dinner whose quality is unmatched in Leyte, as confirmed by our guests who are either on half board or have booked in advance. In short, we offer an all-round experience to be remembered by.
