On google-map, J hotel appears somewhere in Chiayi and a great distance from Alisan Park. But as soon as the bus enters Fencihu, we knew that this hotel is located at a good location. Thus, finding it is not a problem as we saw the hotel, most probably the largest in Fencihu right near to the main road and a big car park where tour-buses and cars were parked.

We arrived at the hotel early and the owner, Ms Ng allowed us to check it. She kindly allocated us to a corner room at the 1st storey with the windows facing the carparks. The room was elongated with a master-bed and thick blanket, great in this cold climate. Slightly raised up from the floor with planks, the bed kept us cosy and warm. The best thing was the hot water, available throughout the day and night.

For a modern-style minsu or a small hotel, J Hotel offered good simple sleeping facilities with additional blanket should we need it. The TV, our constant companion because of the extreme cold outside had a lot of Taiwanese shows as well as movies. The breakfast was healthy food - plain porridge with slices of sweet potato or bread with cooked vegetables, ground nuts, meat floss, turnips fried with eggs, pickled bean-curd, bamboo-shoots, all simple tasty food.

I say the location is great because it is near to Fencihu town and the shops selling snacks, coffee and what-not are nearby. Bus stops for public buses going to Alisan or trains going to Chiayi are also located beside the town. The lunch-boxes which many travellers mentioned in their reviews are sold at various shops in the town.

One thing to note is the uneven and sloppy ground. We were told that we could explore many places of interest from here, but we did not try as our aim was to visit Alisan Park, which we did on the following day. The boss's spouse, Mr Tan fetched us to Shizhao Shizhao (a small town) where we could take buses up to Alisan or back to Chiayi. And we did that. The journey to Alisan Park took about an hour... The bus fare was cheap and the seats comfortable. On our return trip, we took an arranged car transport which took us right to the hotel. Of course it was more expensive - NT$800 for two.

Fencihu town could actually be a base station for explores around the area. The town appears to be similar to "Chiu-Fen" with shops selling snacks and sundry along both side of a short walkway. The valley below also has shops selling coffee and hand-made biscuits. All these were located beside the Fencihu railway station right at the top. The train could take us directly to Chiayi and the buses as well. However, the frequency is far between and we have to make sure of the time of departure.

The owner of the hotel was very helpful and she told us to wait at the bus stop infront along the road at 9.00 am for our trip back to Chiayi. Unfortunately, the bus failed to stop when we waved at it.....She told us to give a feedback, but of what use, since it will not help us get to Chiayi. Nevertheless, there were still public buses going to Shizhao (a small town) and we took one back to Shizhao and then from there to Chiayi.

I would not hesitate to recommend travellers to stay here, clean and comfortable lodging with pristine air. The picture of the hotel in the internet pale in comparison to the real one, just look at the pictures I took..
