What would I single out as Trogon house's best features? Undoubtedly their forest setting and their exquisite food. Trogon House is built with wood on stilts in the natural milkwodforests near plettenberg bay and whereever you are, glasswalls ensure an unobstructed view of the forest, even illuminated by light in the evening. Special opening in the woodpatios give room for trees to grow and give shade on the patios.
The chef is a genius and every morning during breakfast he would come and find out if we would join them for dinner and if we do, gives us the 3 different options, each entailing a three course meal. The food is a good sized portion, extremely good tasting and attractively presented.
The personnel were friendly, helpful, always available and quick.
We did need to ask for refills of milk 3 times in 2 days though. When we needed info for an outside activity booking a price of R500 for the two of us where quoted (including discount), when we arrived at the activity, the actual price was R810!
Would I go back or recommend this to any body else?
Most certainly yes! They just need to update there info on the outside activities and be more attentive to the needs for refills.
We enjoyed the stay, had a good time and where treated like royalty while there in the most beautiful forests in the world! So go and visit them, its worth it.

Everything about our stay was perfect from beginning to end. Initially when we arrived, we were greeted by one of the staff members who carried our luggage for us and was extremely friendly and informative about the procedures and facilities that the venue had to offer.

The room that we stayed in was the most economical they had to offer, however i must say that the room was better than most middle to upper class rooms that I've seen in 5 star venues.

The rooms are cleverly positioned whereby the bedroom and bathroom are completely open to nature without anyone being able to look into the rooms.

Staff members were extremely responsive and showed great initiative to make our stay that extra bit special.

I cannot find any fault in Trogon House and will definitely come back again. Next time I'll bring a few friends to enjoy the stay with us...

Easy to find once you have found Monkeyworld . Persevere down the track - you will get there! We stayed at Trogon House for one night during our Garden Route trip. What a find! Set amongst the trees in a truely tranquil setting, beautifully furnished, and very welcoming. As we were the only guests for that evening we benefitted from personal service from Lee and Adam. The food was really excellent and the spa facility very welcome after our journey. I only wish we had planned to stay longer. We would thoroughly recommend Trogan House, ideally for about 3 nights as the only down side is that it may be too quiet for some people. Absolutely perfect for us and lots of other people I am sure. We hope to be back. Fabulous!

The hotel is reached along a 1.5 km track from the Monkeyland car park - there's usually a curious monkey or two who scrambles along the other side of the fence and follows your car along for a bit before the track dives off into the forest. The hotel is small, with only a handful of rooms which are divided into 3 blocks, the smallest being next to the cosy spa (jacuzzi and sauna).

The main communal areas are sumptuously furnished with big squidgy settees and chairs and large open fireplaces for those cool evenings. The owner has a large collection of African antiques which are displayed everywhere, and look wonderful. The buildings are all in the trees and are connected by a solid plank walkway. Each of the main blocks has a small pool with a surrounding deck with sun loungers. Meals are served in the main block, outside or inside. It was too cool to eat breakfast or dinner outside when we were there.

Our room was comfortable rather than luxurious, and there wasn't enough room for storage, so most things stayed in the suitcase for our 3 nights. The bathroom was adequate, with a nice shower looking onto the forest, but for some reason the sink was really high so that a short person, or a child, would have a problem. There was no personal safe in the room. Mosquitos weren't a problem but the mosquito coil was lit every night in the room. The underfloor heating came in handy as the evenings were cool.

There is a small staff, one of whom is resident overnight. They were all very friendly and helpful, and the chef did nice menus with some degree of choice though obviously an extensive a la carte selection would have been out of the question because there are so few guests. Therein lay the problem as far as we were concerned: for most of the time we were the only 2 guests there, and it felt a bit oppressive. There aren't really any views except for short distances over treetops, and the forest was still and quiet - much quieter than we'd expected even as dawn broke. It would be a great place for a house party though with a group of friends or a large family.

We certainly felt that we didn't want to sit around too much there on our own, but there are some wonderful walks nearby through nature trails or on the long empty sandy beaches. Also, the elephant sanctuary, Monkeyland, and Birds of Eden are on the doorestep. Plettenberg is quite close and has good shops, as well as great food at the Plettenberg Hotel (proper fine dining at the Sands restaurant) and the Look Out just below it.

We're really glad we stayed, and it was a lovely contrast to the other places we stayed at along the Garden Route, but we'd have liked a bit more company.
