Review of Elephant Sanctuary

It was a pleasure to be able to do the Elephant Walk with just 2 of us and 3 Elephants. They are such wonderful creatures and the guides and trainers were so kind with them. Only regret was that my kids were not here to share this.

I cannot believe I didn't review this place when I visited with my daughter a few years ago. It is seriously all about the elephants and it is a SANCTUARY which many visitors seem to forget. These wonderful animals have mostly been rescued or orphaned and the Sanctuary is caring for them and others like them by raising awareness and funds. Of course you are not seeing them in their 'natural' state, they are ambassadors for their kind like many other such projects in SA. Go and enjoy the spiritual experience of walking with these gentle souls.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Elephant Sanctuary. We were allowed to walk with the elephants holding their trunks. We walked along a pathway to an open area. The elephants were startled by a branch falling from a tree. It was windy that day. The guides had the Elephants performing, one of them shook its head, another kneeled down. As it was windy and the Elephants were easily spooked it was recommended that no-one should ride the Elephants that day. A DVD was made of our visit to the see the elephants.

Loved the interaction with the elephants - but a bit touristy! There are not many places you can have this kind of interaction with the elephants so its worth a visit

This was our first elephant experience in Africa so at the time seemed like a good idea. A month on and many many elephant experiences in the wild later, in hindsight we would pass on this a second time round. It was nice to interact with the elephants although does seem a bit unnatural and staged. The elephants seem really well cared for and it's not as scary an experience as I thought it would be. We got some interesting "facts" about the elephants although the reason given for tuskless elephants was countered by subsequent guides in other game parks we went to later! Definitely worthwhile if you have limited time and won't be going to many game parks to see them in a more natural environment.
