Owner description: Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary is part of the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA). Monkeyland first opened its gates to the public in 1998 amidst much skepticism, a sanctuary of this kind had never been attempted before; multiple primate species all running free and together in one big forest. But despite the fears it was a huge success and the world's first multi-species, free roaming primate sanctuary has set a standard that other sanctuaries now aspire to. 12 hectares of indigenous forest is home to over 500 primates of 11 different species; Squirrel, Capuchin, Howler, Vervet and Spider monkeys, Hanuman and Spectacled Langur, Saki, Gibbon, Ring-tailed and Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs all enjoy the freedom to climb trees, forage amongst the undergrowth and live a life that is far removed from where they came. Ex-pets, laboratory animals and surpluses from zoos that used to live in cages now have the opportunity to behave in a way that is natural to them. Our experienced rangers will guide you on a one-hour tour of the forest, pointing out the different species whilst offering a wealth of information on their ecology and conservation. An added attraction is the 128m long suspension bridge that stretches across the forest canopy offering magnificent views of the surrounding forests.

“Informative but slightly pricey”
Reviewed 9 May 2014

As previously suggested, the sanctuary is quite dominated by 2 species of Monkeys. My wife and I were fortunate enough to have a small group for the tour (just 4) and were treated to some very interesting and informative facts by our tour guide. Whilst it was a little on the pricey side, considering what they are trying to achieve it is understandable. I would recommend a visit but expect to pay!

“Great experience in natural setting”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

We bought the dual ticket which combined a ticket with World of birds. Very good guided tour lasting over an hour through very natural woodland setting. Most if the monkeys / apes are not indegineous to South Africa but that is not a problem we saw all the species on a gentle walk through the forest.

“Not quite value for money”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

I was lucky to be able to visit at a reduced fare, but feel that if I had paid the full amount the experience was not in line with money paid. Plenty of monkeys to be seen, also nice and close for great encounters. But little variety and our hours walk was done and dusted in just under 50 minutes
