“Experience holistic goodness- vegan friendly”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

Located just 20 mins away from San Jose airport, hotel Bougainvillea is loaded with greenery, good people and service.

The sweet chirping of birds early in the morning will ensure that you wake up in the morning and take a stroll in the garden, swim in the pool or sweat out at the tennis court. With variety of pleasing birds, shoots, plants and fruits; its hard to go back to the room.

The staff is very nice and helpful. Almost everyone speaks or understand English so communicating your needs is very easy.

The only issue was water in the shower which kept on changing temperature automatically but you can surely give this a skip provided there is so much to appreciate.

Good vegetarian and vegan food available on request. Staff is willing to modify recipe according to needs.

Perfect place for meetings or stay.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher levels with garden view

If you are the kind that like the nature and the birds sounds when you wake up, this is one amazing example of it. The hotel is a nice and clean place, well equipped, a great restaurant (actually the food was quite good for a hotel), swimming pool, tennis courses and a great, great, great garden with walk ways around to have a nice evening chat with the one that you love. The rooms need some improvement, as they are kind of old, but everything was working fine. They also have a great souvenir shop where you can have the last minute gifts for the ones that you love, price was faire... and the surroundings where nice and well conserved.

Room Tip: Ask for room with garden view

My wife and I were in San Jose for a "dental vacation" - we decided to stay at Bouganvillea because of its' style and charm. The rooms were excellent and the staff unobtrusive -- yet when engaged they were happy and helpful.
The view of the gardens from our balcony were spectacular -- and we sat out on the balcony daily to enjoy the view (and walked through them every morning) -- and the coolness of the air coming off the mountains. No airconditioners and none needed once during the entire week.
Not too much walkable from the hotel, but an $8 cab right brought us to heart of San Jose where we enjoyed the Central Market and surrounding areas.

We loved it here.

Room Tip: third floor garden view is what we enjoyed and will ask for again next year.

To me, a resort is a property where the expectation is that you will spend all of your time there, including meals and various services, whereas a hotel is a base where you sleep and then venture out during the day. By that definition, the Bougainvillea is a resort, with a pool, tennis court, fitness center, spa, and more. Beyond that, it is rather isolated from any other attraction, though there is a small grocery within a 10-minute walk. A taxi to the center of San Jose costs US $10-20 each way, depending on the traffic and your skill as a negotiator.

But the good news is that you will have very little reason to want to leave the grounds. The food in the restaurant is above average, and the selection of fresh fruits and juices at breakfast is great. The rooms are comfortable, and well maintained, and WiFi access is included in the rate. The Bougainvillea covers a large area, and the gardens are beautifully kept, with many types of native plants.Extra points for the "no smoking" policy throughout the hotel and grounds. If I had to mark them down for anything, it would be the limited selection of items in the small shop adjacent to the lobby.

Finally, two hints: 1) before you arrive, contact the hotel to have someone meet your flight; the charge is US $30 each way, roughly the same as taxi fare; 2) pay your Costa Rica exit tax there; they just add the US $29 to your bill and save you a line and a wait when you depart.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the garden.

Great place to arrive after a long flight. Swanky but welcoming. Garden is lovely. The staff were excellent and the breakfast delicious. Particularly enjoyed our first sight of a blue-crowned motmot on the bird table.

Our family of four stayed here for our first night in Costa Rica. It was a very relaxing place after a busy travel day. We loved the gardens. The next morning my husband and I got up at 5:30 am after a tip from another traveler regarding the bird activity in the early morning. It was amazing the number of birds we saw. If you enjoy bird watching, this hotel is for you!

Like many other reviewers I can't say enough about how beautifully landscaped the gardens are here. My family of three stayed here the first night of our vacation and it was a great starting point, serene and beautiful after a half day of travel to get there. We spent our first few hours just walking around the lush gardens photographing the wide variety of plants, flowers and ponds. The swimming pool looked inviting too although we didn't partake.
The room itself was on the second floor with a balcony and lovely garden view and quite spacious, but I'm sure the beds are double size not queen (which when you are used to sleeping in a king bed can make quite a difference!). Luckily our young daughter was comfortable enough to sleep on the couch and my husband and I had a bed to ourselves. The room had a mini fridge and quite a large bathroom and sink/vanity area and closet. I was surprised that there was no air conditioning but as it turns out there was no need as the temps at night were in the 70's and the slatted windows allowed for a nice breeze.
The only complaint we had is that the shower temperature would alter from hot to cold to hot on its own. The food wad pretty good, as it turns out my husband had one of his best dinners in our 8 day Costa Rica trip here (he had the fish), the rest of our meals at other hotels just average or below.
So all in all a great place to stay only a half hour from the airport.
