“Another Enjoyable Evening”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

Myself & my husband have just returned home from celebrating his birthday at MacNean House & Restaurant. This was our third visit here over the years and we really enjoyed it as we previously did. We were welcomed by Neven himself, he is a very friendly, warm & polite person as he always comes across when you would see him on tv. All the staff are very professional, polite & friendly. Our accommodation was lovely, our bed was very comfortable, the place was spotless. Now the important part, our food was AMAZING!! OMG, it was delicious, very tasty. We had the prestige menu, we savoured every moment, food just melts in your mouth. Again, breakfast is also part of the experience, absolutely gorgeous and so much choice, great to have so much locally sourced and fresh Irish produce. We are completely full, probably won't eat for a week. Thank you for another very enjoyable & memorable experience. We will be back!

It had taken us quite a while to get to McNean House but are we glad we did so! It was the most wonderful dining experience, probably the best we have ever had. The bar area is lovely and comfortable and the staff greeting is as you would expect from those who work with Neven Maguire, with his attention to detail and friendliness. Our dinner was exceptional. To say that we had, amongst other dishes, scallops, John Dory, lamb four ways, banana dessert, is such an understatement as to be laughable. The additions and flavours were truly exceptional. We had a lovely Vouvray from the Loire which was very reasonably priced. In fact all the wines are very reasonable and there is no ridiculous mark-up like you get in many restaurants. The drink prices correspond to local bar prices-€4 for a pint of lager!! Where would you get it??

The decor is really lovely, the service is superb and to cap it all the head waiter, Raymond, drove us back to our B&B in nearby Belcoo. What service!! It was our first time and we fervently pray that it will not be our last. Very highly recommended.

Room Tip: Before or after your meal drop in to The Bush Bar across the street. Very chatty young barman there...

Booked our stay last year & was not disappointed! The staff make McNean House an even more memorable experience. Our room was the McNean Suite, it was fresh & spacious. Our dining experience was the best we have ever experienced & it stretched over 3 hours of pure bliss. Once again breakfast was another delight!! Thank you for a great time-will stay with us forever! Book & enjoy!! Hope to return.

Room Tip: McNean Suite was on the top floor-spacious & comfortable!

My wife and I have just returned from a one night stay at MacNean House. We received a very nice welcome and there was a lot of attention to detail in the room and bathroom including locally sourced toiletries. The food was superb from start to finish and the hospitality from the staff was excellent - not too intrusive but very attentive.

We stayed in a super deluxe room which was lovely. The only problem was that there was a young child in the room below us who decided to run around the room shouting the next morning at 8am for approximately an hour. After having the late sitting meal the night before which concluded at 1am, it was rather unfortunate to have our leisurely morning disrupted. Maybe Nevin might consider making his establishment adults only. This was only a minor blip on a rather wonderful evening.

This was my favourite meal ever bar none. No wonder this place is booked up six months in advance. Everything is perfect - from the warm welcome to the amazing breakfast. Neven's cooking is famous for a reason but you just have to experience it for yourself. However, what marks this place out from all other fine dining establishments is the warmth and friendliness of the staff - no pretentiousness or stuffiness here. No task is too much trouble. Neven is also famous for using local produce in his restaurant, but this attention to detail extends beyond the food - for example, Belleek china used in the restaurant, Voya (from Strandhill, Co. Sligo) products in the bathrooms (both the restaurant toilets and the bathroom attached to our room). The only minor issue was the noise from the bar opposite in the late evening when we were trying to sleep. Clearly this is beyond the control of the property and it didn't bother us, but if you are a light sleeper you might want to request a room at the rear of the property. However, I would not let this put you off - bring ear plugs if necessary - because otherwise you will miss the dining experience of a lifetime. Finally, regarding the location - it is in the middle of nowhere, but it is a very beautiful rural location, near the UNESCO Marble Arch caves, so don't let that put you off either!

Just returned from McNean restaurant and what a beautiful memorable experience. When we arrived on a wet evening in May, we were warmly greeted by a man who brought our luggage to our bedroom and opened our door. He was very attentive and friendly. He gave us a cold bottle of milk and a glass jar of freshly baked cookies, chocolate chip, short bread and many other varieties, they were delicious. Tea and coffee facilities in the bedrooms which my parents were delighted with.

We booked a super deluxe bedroom (sky blue throws and matching pillows as shown in pictures above), The décor in the room was really elegantly designed with neutral colours and ivory furniture. A Victorian bath and rain shower with a variety of products in the bathroom. Our room had a seating area and coffee table, which really added to the ambience and bathrobes and slippers.

We sat in the bar area prior to being seated in the restaurant. We were warmly greeted by an older man serving drinks, he was very friendly and my father really enjoyed the banter. We were also served a range of orderves which were tasty. Our order was taken prior to sitting in the dining room, this was great as a staff member talked us through the menu. We opted for the 5 course meat menu at €72 which is great value, between every course their was a pre-course. Each course was delicious, my personal favourite was hock terrine, peanut chocolate dessert and my beef was cooked perfectly medium as requested. My family and I enjoyed every course and were completely full when leaving even the men! There was a band singing in the bar area after the meal which was delightful. We got the opportunity to meet Nevin after the meal, He was so down to earth, warm and friendly. We got a photo taken with him as well which was great.

Breakfast was excellent, a great variety of yogurt, granola, cereals, pastries (croissants, scones, danshies), freshly squeezed orange and fruit juices. Porridge was also available with Irish mist. We got Irish breakfasts and scrambled egg and boxty. It was all amazing from start to finish. It had a lovely relaxed atmosphere once again. We had the opportunity to buy strawberry jam, marmalade, honey and olive olive all homemade by Nevin and his team which was great. We were also shown around Nevins cookery school which was the icing on the cake.

The smile never left any of our faces for the whole weekend, wonderful memories were created which will forever be remembered. Thank you Nevin and all, we will return!!

Room Tip: Go on get a super deluxe or junior suite, their worth every penny!!

Had a fab experience at MacNeans. A friend booked restaurant and rooms 8 months prior to visit, and we enjoyed a long period of anticipation prior to our visit. Nothing in the village of Blacklion except MacNean House and a small pub over the road. had a drink there, then back for the meal. Neven was there and welcomed us while we were waiting to be seated. Nibbles were offered while he walked us through the menu. The food was amazing, and there were amuse bouches throughout. We are all foodies, and the quality and presentation of the food was even better than all we had heard about it. We had the late sitting, and finished after midnight. there is a residents' bar for late tipples.
Breakfast the next morning was again just perfect. The fluffiest , whitest poached eggs I have ever seen, and great savoury options too. Not a cheap experience, actually quite expensive, but you will need to book months ahead, and so will have time to save.
In among my top ten best meals ever, it is a great experience for a special occasion. Everybody working there was lovely and made us feel very welcome. I know that I will return there to work my way through the menu!
