Tony and Annette were warm, welcoming and well organized hosts. We sailed aboard the good ship HINEMOANA II with Tony for 3 days and had an inside look at NZ's cruising culture. Tony is an excellent captain and very willing to share his knowledge and experience. Our young children enjoyed the cruise as well. The Hinemoana is very comfortable for a family of 4 and Tony's food was very nice. The Lodge at MBH is beautiful, well appointed and very spacious. The location is unrivaled. EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS!

This was our last stop on our four weeks trip through NZ before going back to Auckland and flying home. The weather was superb so we could enjoy our three nights stay in this fantastic location even more!
We stayed in the studio which was fantastic. It has a queen size bed and a fully equipped kitchen were we had breakfast and also cooked dinner which we ate outside on the terrace. The views over the tranquil waters of Mill Bay were wonderful! In the evening we saw flying fish and during the daytime a lot of birdlife.
Two evenings we walked into the small town which took us about 20 minutes but was a nice stroll along the waterfront. We had dinner at the famous Mangonui fish shop which was really good. We can also recommend the Thai restaurant were we ate the second night.
Wander up to Rangikapiti Pa which is just around the corner or go with the car to the car park (beware, the road is unsealed and has some VERY deep holes!) and enjoy the gorgeous views over Mill Bay, Mangonui Harbour and Doubtless Bay.
Tony and Annette are really great hosts. We did a day trip with Tony on his sail boat from Mill Bay to Whangaroa harbour and that was one of the highlights of our stay in NZ. We helped Tony sail the boat and he told us a lot about the coastal area we were passing, mainly owned by Maori people. We had a delicious lunch on deck with wine and soft drinks looking over the sea and the beaches under the blazing summer sun - devine! Tony told us many interesting stories about his life and we really enjoyed the day on the water. Later Annette came to pick us up in Whangaroa and drove us back to the cottage. If you like water this is a "must do" and definately recommendet - no experience necessary!
We also did a day trip with our car to Cape Reinga to see the famous lighthouse and the great sand dunes. Definately worth going! You can also book tours which start from either Kaitaia (about 30 mins drive) or at Paihia and they stop in Mangonui to pick you up. Ask Annette for help if you wanna do this, she recommended a company to us but as we wanted to be independent and not restricted to a tour schedule we decided to go on our own though. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to also check out the Karikari Peninsula with all its wonderful beaches - next time!
If you want to go further north than the Bay of Islands for a few days and need a base for exploring - look no further! But take some time, stay at least two or three nights to be able to fully enjoy it!

Anete's attention to detail, in this gorgeous establishment, is surperb!! We just loved the two nights we spent at Mill Bay Haven. From there we were able to get the bus to Cape Reinga - they collected us and dropped as at the end of Silver Egg Rd, thus saving us the bother of leaving our car parked all day. The local eateries are absolutely tops!! A must is a visit to the Mongonui Fish Shop to dine - out of this world!!

Room Tip: If there are two couples, suggest you book the Lodge
