Everything about this place is exceptional! From charming rooms and a perfect location to lovely hosts and central heating and air, this place has it all.

I stayed at this wonderful property 3 different times and was always thrilled with my experience. Gary and Jean, the owners, are warm and welcoming and extremely helpful with activities in the area, including hidden gems only a local would know.

The rooms are immaculate and tastefully decorated and include such amenities as tea and coffee, a mini refrigerator, and robes. I cannot say enough positive things about this place and consider it a must if you are traveling in the far north.

The Thai restaurant in town is fantastic as well so be sure to give it a try.

We booked this lovely hotel having seen previous reviews on Trip Advisor and we were so happy we did. We originally booked for 2 nights but became so comfortable and relaxed that we extended for an extra night!

The hotel is very much a boutique hotel with a small number (maybe 6?) rooms which are all beautifully renovated and spotlessly clean. The location in this tiny little town is just gorgeous and apart from the lovely room we also had access to the garden which is a great spot to sit and have a wine at the end of the day. Jean and Gary are lovely people and great hosts and helped us out with a number of suggestions for activities each day.

There is also the added bonus of being right next door to an excellent restaurant/bistro called the 'Acorn' which we ate in 2 nights out of the 3 - we would have eaten there 3 but it's closed on Tuesday. The food was really delicious and the service excellent.

I would really recommend a stay in this hotel and we hope to go back again before too long.

If you like quiet with clean comfortable rooms with an owner that really cares, this is for you. Highly recommend the Ponga Suite.

Room Tip: Ponga Suite had everything you can ask for, except an ironing board which is supplied when you ask.

The Old Oak represents what New Zealand is all about ... relaxing , accomodating, proudly serviced and stunningly decorated - just like the gorgeous bay that snuggles right alongside it. It is a gem of a place in this sleepy and still unspoiled coastal village of Mangonui. The hotel is recently renovated and is chic and immaculately presented . There are luxurious and special touches throughout- from the most deluxe of beds , top class linen and towells to the vases of fresh flowers from the hotels colonial garden ---everything is crisp and clean and super comfy! There are rooms of various sizes and aspects , all of the same high standard. Our room gave us a wonderful view of the bay and the balcony provided us with a great place to have breakfast or relaxation at the end of the day. The host Gary made us feel instantly welcome , offering many suggestions of things to see and do all along the penninsula; making bookings for us , providing maps , places to eat and interesting historical insights... nothing was too much trouble . We joined the Cape Reinga tour from Mangonui with the bus stopping right outside the hotel to pick us up! The Old Oak is a great place to relax and feel spoiled with comfort while soaking in the harbour views and the pretty little village of Mangonui . Still smiling.

Jean and Gary provided us with everything we needed. The room was beautifully presented and had a real New Zealand charm. It was quiet and the bed linen was top quality. The Old Oak has been very carefully restored and is full of character. If you are making your way through Northland this is the place to stay. We took a day trip from there to Cape Reinga and managed it all at a leisurely pace. The restaurant next door to the Old Oak, the Acorn, served us great meals in a warm and inviting environment. We will happily recommend the Old Oak to our friends and will be back to stay again.

We stayed 2 nights recently for our first wedding anniversary and had a thoroughly enjoyable time at the Old Oak. It has great character and has been thoughtfully and tastefully renovated with relaxation and comfort forefront of mind. Gary was a great host and very welcoming. Loved the local ammenities and area - so picturesque - the view from the Inn is stunning, right on the water. We dined next door at the Acorn Bistro which we recommend to all other guests - fabulous! Best breakfast was at Post Office cafe. We are very keen to return soon to this lovely boutique hotel.
