“Great stay”
Reviewed 11 May 2012

The Old Oak is a fantastic hotel. It has been refurbished to a wonderful standard. Jean and Gary were very lovely and welcoming and gave us some tips about places to visit during our stay. Had a delicious dinner at the Acorn next door. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Tui Room.

Jean's warm welcome made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived, with her recommendations on where to explore during our stay in Mangonui and assistance in making restaurant bookings. We had the upper floor Ponga Suite comprising a spacious and well equipped bedroom (including kitchen facilities), en suite and lounge. It also features a great covered balcony that wraps around the 2 external sides of the unit. Sitting out there after dark with a glass of wine, watching the stars and listening to the harbour waters lapping just a few metres away across the road made for a great chill out experience. Can't believe there' s anywhere better in the area, so won't hesitate to stay here again on future visits.

The Old Oak is a small hotel/inn located in the Doubtless Bay area in the North Island of New Zealand. THe owners, Jeanne and Gary, are just delightful - as is their cat, Monster. The cat ran out to greet us as soon as we arrived!

The inn is an old historic building that was in great disrepair until Jeanne bought it and began renovating it. She and Gary have done a fabulous job keeping the beautiful feel of the old building while upgrading it to 5 star status. The view from the front door overlooking Doubtless Bay is breath-taking. The rooms are large (we stayed in a room that was formerly the pub!), with all the modern comforts. There is a lovely garden in the side yard and peaceful sitting places in the back.

Since there are only a few rooms in the old inn, be sure to book early. It is well worth it. And be sure to give Monster a pat for us!

Room Tip: The upstairs rooms are gotten to by a very narrow stairway. If you have big suitcases, try to get a...

The Old Oak Hotel has been restored with love & attention to detail into a chic & super comfortable hotel. Stylish decorating, luxury linen, free fast wireless internet, air conditioning, spotlessly clean & quiet..... & hosts who really care. The Old Oak is nestled beside the idyllic Mangonui waterfront, with The Acorn restaurant next door (where we had an outstanding experience), & just a short walk to all the shops & restaurants & historic buildings that make a trip to Mangonui so charming. Thanks to Jean & Gary & their local knowledge we found our way to local spots of interest that we would never have known about otherwise. This is the perfect base to explore the Far North, or just to relax & unwind. Our only regret is that we made the mistake of only booking one night, next time we plan to stay longer. Sitting & relaxing at the end of the day on the veranda at the Old Oak should be on everyone's Bucket List. In fact, repeating the experience is on my Bucket List.

We arrived in town without having booked any accommodation and the first place we saw was the Old Oak. I've travelled a lot and know a great little hotel when I see one and immediately wanted to stay there.
My instincts were proved right. We booked in - thankfully a room was available due to the dreadful weather they'd been having - and were given the Tui room, a lovely private room with a little terrace and a wonderful large bathroom with the best shower! The decor was very carefully thought out, stylish and individual. The mattress was incredibly comfortable - easily the best of the trip - and you even have a choice of pillows. Just ask your wonderful hosts. Free working WiFi in the rooms. A very lovely stay and a great surprise to find a real boutique hotel run professionally and with love in such a small town. I'll be back... one day.

We stayed here for just one night, arriving in Mangonui late one afternoon and leaving the following morning. If we'd know how lovely this hotel was, we may well have worked the schedule to stay another night. The hotel has been lovingly restored to a high standard - we stayed in a double room overlooking the beautiful garden. Gary and Jean were extremely welcoming hosts, we were in easy walking distance of the main area of Mangonui (including the fish shop) and given half a chance we'd definitely stay here again.
