“The perfect getaway”
Reviewed 10 September 2013

I spent four nights in the Kauri Suite of the Old Oak Boutique Hotel in mid-August, and could easily have stayed much longer. This beautifully restored old hotel in its wonderful setting was all that I wanted it to be, and more. Jean and Gary were the perfect hosts - unobstrusive, but there when you needed them.
The Kauri Suite, at the back of the building, was single-storied and therefore not subject to noises from above. It was perfect for my needs - clean, quiet, comfortable and stylish. I had direct access to the gardens from my room, and enjoyed sitting outside (weather permitting) with a book, a cup of coffee and the neighbouring cat to keep me company. Bliss.
Mangonui itself is a delightful and picturesque little town, with plenty to see both in the town and beyond. I drove up to Cape Reinga one day; spent several hours at the whaling museum on Butlers Point on another (I recommend this). Everyone I met was friendly and helpful, and I felt very much at home there.
I think I was there at the right time - very few tourists, so no big crowds or lots of traffic. A wonderful and memorable stay.

Room Tip: The Kauri Suite - perfect for singles or couples.

Really quaint, beautifully decorated proerty with great rooms and good amenities: dvd player, kitchenette, bath AND shower and all in immaculate order.
Thanks also for the yummy champagne truffles from Makana.
We loved staying in the Pohutakawa suite, BUT it is noisy.
We had a youngish couple staying in the room above and they clomped around all the time and we heard every word.
Perhaps an upstairs room would be perfect.
Despie this, we LOVED our stay and would come back as Mangonui is a rare gem.:

Room Tip: An upstairs room will be quieter

We stayed in the Tui Studio, think the Kauri Studio is even nicer but booked when we were there.

PROs
Lovely, character room.
Very clean.
Nice staff.
Bar fridge.
Large TV and DVD player, plus DVDs to borrow.
Free WiFi.
Large bathroom.
2 minute walk to the village.

CONs
No bath in Tui Studio.

Room Tip: I think the Kauri Studio would be the best pick but the Tui Studio was great too.

Character property about 5 mins stroll from the centre of Mangonui (although there's really only one street!) directly facing pretty bay. Very secluded but really easy to walk to excellent fish and chip shop for dinner! Doesn't do breakfast but there's a cafe along the waterfront and a minimart. Lovely quaint village with old wooden buildings - ideal for unwinding. Hotel itself was superb - we were upgraded for free to the Pohutakawa suite which was huge, with probably the best bed I've ever slept in! Great night - will recommend to friends.

We based ourselves here for two nights to do the Cape, and it was perfect. The room was tastefully decorated, the bed super comfortable, and the bathroom roomy. Our hosts were very accommodating of our particular needs and were very responsive. The location is sublime, so close to the sea but just far enough away from the township.

Stayed here for 3 nights meeting up with friends who were camping . From the warm welcome, the upgrade and the superb facilities, our stay was perfect. We stayed in the Kauri room, which had an outside area to sip wine in the evening with our friends. The room is large, tastefully decorated and we loved the skylight above the bed which let the early morning sun in. The location , across the road from the bay, means all restaurants, shops etc are within 5 mins walk. There were so many areas to sit and enjoy the views. We loved the fact that real coffee was provided in our room, not the usual instant stuff. We were allowed to entertain our friends in our room and on the several patios. I can highly recommend the Oak as a hideaway or as a gateway to beautiful Doubt less Bay. We will return.

A beautiful and stylish hotel. We had a lovely room which was large with a very nice bathroom. Everything is clean and comfortable and Jean our hostess was exceptionally helpful and informative. We were travelling with our daughter and her husband who also had a lovely room and were upgraded to a suite. We were the only guests which gave us full use of the house. I imagine it could be slightly noisy if the house is full due to all the timber floors etc. One of the really positive things is the location - just a short drive from the Bay of islands whilst still retaining the quaint village feel. One of our lucky finds was the bakery for breakfast - great coffee and pastries. They even put on a batch of croissants early for us so we could have them before we left.
