The Butler Point Whaling Museum was a great surprise. The tour guide is very knowledgeable about the early whaling in the area. Lots of items in the museum related to the early days of whaling. The grounds are beautiful overlooking Mangonui harbor. You must make an appointment for the tour but don't let that stop you. Admission is $20 each. The tour is approx. 1 1/2 hours and you can roam around the grounds afterwards at your leisure. Don't miss the huge Pohutkawa tree and Pa area. There are picnic areas if you want to eat there.

We spent a very interesting couple of hours at Butler Point Whaling museum. Be aware though that you can visit by appointment only. Our guide told us lots of interesting facts and stories about the whaling days in this part of New Zealand and the people who lived there. We saw a whaling boat, interesting displays, a film and artefacts in the museum and went through the house which is furnished with period furniture. The grounds are extensive and you can do a couple of walks. We went on a walk to see the huge pohutkawa tree and another to the Maori Pa area. Well worth going to especially if you enjoy history.

Upon booking a trip to this Museum, one gets a fantastic overview of what it was like to be a whaler in times over 100yrs ago. The very knowledgeable guide describes the whalers activities and shows one around the museum. The Whale vertebrae are incredibly large!! The short movie clip was great too. Not to mention Captain Butler's old house and gardens....
