“A precious gem nestled in the hillside above Chalong Bay!”
Reviewed 25 March 2010

Wow, did we pick this one right! After traveling for five weeks in Bangkok, Delhi, McLeod Ganj and Kathmandu, and staying in hotels that we just felt ripped off in, this place is a slice of paradise, with the most wonderful, gracious and caring hosts one could ask for.

We were picked up at the airport (12:30 at night!), by our driver Mr. Sukan, after a long day of travel from Kathmandu, and taken through the dark streets of sleepy Phuket (the drive is about 30/35 minutes from airport), and once at Rising Sun, we were greeted at our villa by Khun Wipa who made us feel so welcomed.

Since we were staying for 12 days, we chose the package deal, and we were so happy that we did.

In the morning, we realized what a gem we found ourselves in. A beautiful property, immaculately landscaped, with beautiful three bedroom and one bedroom villas nestled throughout the hillside.

We stayed in one of the one-bedroom villas that opens onto an exquisite pool, with a delicious fresh fruit breakfast prepared every morning for us (from a selection of different types of breakfasts: American, Asian or yoghurt and fresh fruit with croissant) and fresh coffee made with a Secco espresso machine.

The Welcome Massage, part of the package, was actually one of the best that we had during our stay on Phuket, so good in fact that we requested the same masseuses at our villa for another massage.

The Rising Sun Residence offers a cooking class, and although we did not choose to do it this time, we did have dinner at Wipa’s Thai Cuisine, and found the food to be sublime and beautifully prepared, the dishes chosen for us personally by Wipa and prepared by her chef, which she based on our previous stated preferences when looking for restaurants.

This area of Phuket, above Chalong Bay, has very special qualities that lend itself to a peaceful, restorative vacation. Most of the beaches on Phuket are crowded, with tourists crammed into the rented chairs under umbrellas, although we did find a beach that was not very crowded and had great oceanside fast food restaurants.

We preferred to stay away from the crowds at Patong, Kata Beach, etc., and this place is perfect. Mr. Sukan, our driver, was very professional, safe, conscientious and friendly, and available when we wanted to sightsee, go to the beach or go to dinner.

The owners, Khun Meetee and Khun Wipa, made us feel as though we were home. A place we plan to return to again and again.

This place is excellent. Located on a hillside area in Chalong, it is away from the busy towns but easily accesible by car ( a car and driver come with the package). Highlights:
1) Villa- beautiful inside and out with excellent amenities. Completely surrounded by nature and very quiet. Great pool at the villa's doorstep.
2) Breakfast - served in the villa, plentiful and tasty
3) Cooking class - starts off with a fun trip to the local market to buy the ingredients. Everything is so fresh. The actual cooking class was great fun and the food was amazingly delicious. The kids enjoyed helping out too!
4) Personalised service - we were personally greeted by Wipa on arrival and she met us every day that we were there. Nothing was too much trouble and she and her staff were always willing to help. We met Methee briefly - he was really nice too.
5) Driver and car - this was great cos it was so convenient and comfortable. We felt very safe too.
It was a great visit for us and we are already planning our return. If you're looking for a quiet place to unwind, this is it.

We had booked one bedroom villa but when arrived we were told that all one bedroom villa's were full, so we were upgraded to 3 bedroom villa without any extra money :) Our 3 bedroom villa was outstanding, beautiful private pool, nice decoration, fully equiped kitchen and so one. They also provided feeding chair and baby cot for our small one. Car service which is free if you stay here was great. Otherwise it would have been impossible to move around as this place is far away from beaches. Only thing what is whitin a walking distance was Wat Chalong.

Eventough this place was awesome it still had some cons: Breakfast is pretty much same everyday so you are soon bored to it. We stayed 10 nights and we had to buy some other stuff also to eat at the morning cause the same breakfast all the time was starting to be enough. Hotel restorant was quite mediocore. We think the food was quite average while the price was quite high. So better to go outside to eat. During our stay there happened to be a temple fair in Wat Chalong. This event happens every year and it lasts 5days. While it was intresting to visit it's very anyoing for people staying in Risingf Sun as the music&noise goes on untill about 1am. So no sleep before that for 5days :( Not nice when you target is to relax and rest.

We mainly stayed in our villa and on the pool. With the car we went around Phuket and the beaches but I must say that Phuket itself is quite awful place to stay. No matter what beach you choose is full of beach chairs and package tourists. There are so many beautiful and quite places in Thailand that after visiting I can't see any reason why to stay in Phuket island. But if you indeed decide to stay here Rising Sun is a good choice as it is far away from the hustle and bustle of the beaches!

we stayed in the one bedroom villas at the poolside - great to have our baby sleep inside while we played with our older girls by the pool - meters from the villa. Villas were very nicely appointed and double the size of a good sized hotel room. They were light and airy (bathrooms had large bath separate shower and great skylight) bed was comfortable plenty of pillows and they kindly put down 2 mini matresses for our girls in our room. Food from Wipa's was really VERY good. Excellent quality and having a full cooked breakfast served in the villa - housekeeper would lay the table and set everything out for us and made fresh toast and tea / coffee in the kitchenette (real coffee from Saeco coffee machine!) was really nice. living area inlcuded a kitchenette with dining table TV DVD player etc - they had soem music and DVD's that we could use and no trouble for them to find more. Inclusive of their rate is free wireless internet, use of a car and driver for 9 hours a day and 2x 45 min massage in our villa all which were excellent! - we went out for half day with kids then for dinner at night. One night we got a tip by the owners (Khun Wipa & Khun Methee both foodies) to go to a local restaurant that had views as good as "baan rim Pa" in patong but food was incredibly cheap! 120-180 THB for mains! Wished we had more time to do the bbq by the villa poolside which would have been fun. Next time we'll do the very nicely appointed 3 bedroom villas - huge with OWN pool etc and better views! Here's what NOT to do - dont try and do a boat tour to Khai island when its a public holiday week - it was a waste of money and it was like packing tourists like sardines. We didnt stay for the lunch and paid to get off the island asap!

Having returned back to a snowy Finland from sunny Phuket only a couple of hours ago, we just have to close our eyes to be back in the pool of villa Chandra, with the view over the lush surrounding hills and Chalong Bay in the distance! What a treat we were offered at Rising Sun Residence - it is everything previous reviewers have described and more: we think that Khun Methee, Khun Wipa and their wonderful staff are able to provide something unique that speaks to the exact needs of every guest. For us, it was the unexpected possibility to show family and friends a side of Phuket other than the crowded streets and beaches of Patong, and to experience a hotel other than the anonymous - although very nice - Hilton at Karon beach where we also stayed - and we all fell in love! Our warmest thoughts to Benja for making us feel so much at home - and of course for arranging everything from table reservations to hair cuts! We will also miss the wonderful care of the housekeepers very much - in particular the way they tended to our Linn and made her feel comfortable. Hope to meet you all again! Liselott & family

Our stay at Rising Sun Residence was absolutely amazing! For the last 4 days of our Thailand holiday, we wanted somewhere small and luxurious with personalised service, and that's exactly what we got!! The service was outstanding. Benja (our wonderful personal concierge) made reservations for us at recommended restaurants, arranged massages, and was at our beckoned call. We had a driver for 9 hours per day who drove us wherever we wanted to go, and waited patiently while we shopped, had lunch, massages, etc. We also had our own housekeeper who brought breakfast to our villa in the morning, cleaned our villa, and cut up fresh fruit for us every day. And the delightful owners Methee and Wipa..... They made us feel so welcome - like part of the family! We had dinner with them one night (they even arranged for us to have mango with sticky rice, a favourite of mine) and they were wonderful hosts - it was like we'd known them for ages!

We stayed in a one bedroom villa - it was beautiful! Tastefully furnished and more like a small home than holiday accommodation. The setting is beautiful - lush, tropical gardens surrounding the pool, immaculately maintained. There isn't much within walking distance, but that didn't matter at all because our driver took us wherever we wanted to go. The Sabai Sabai package with all its inclusions was fantastic value for money. All in all, we were treated like royalty and like part of the family. This was our 3rd trip to Phuket and we've stayed in at least 5 other hotels, but this was by far the best place we've stayed. We would definitely recommend it!!!

We have just returned home after spending two fantastic weeks at the Rising Sun Residence. This was our second stay here in five months and it will not be our last.
Rising Sun Residence has become a friendship more than a stay. This is all due to the owners Khun Methee and Khun Wipa and also their loyal staff, who work dilligently to make your stay with them memorable. For us the second time around has been an a cullinary adventure. Khun wipa went beyond our all ready high expectations by introducing us to new dishes such as Miang Kum and Long Tao Jiew. She surprised us with our favourite fruits which she searched the markets for. We would come home from a busy day and there on our table was always something special that excited and delighted us. We can not thank Khun Wipa enough for her generousity of spirit.
To top this off, we did the cooking class with Khun Wipa and she had designed a whole new menu for us. So we moved from beginners to advanced. LOL. The cooking class is really informative and good fun. I can only wonder what surprises Khun Wipa will have for us next year. Yes, we are planning our return again next year.
There are so many positives about the Rising Sun Residence that the list is too long to write it all down. Great accomodation. Great service. Great help....just ask and they will help you choose and organise anything from trips to a great massage in your room.
PLUS they usually are able to get you a decent discount on things. Each day we would see Khun Methee or Khun Wipa for a personalised touch and a chat. Also to be thanked for a fantastic job was Khun Benja who manages the Residence. Not only a delightful and sincere person but very efficient as well. Nothing was too much of an inconvenience for her. This was really appreciated by us. Also the maids were lovely and helped us with learning a few Thai words. They also were so eager to help you and no request was over looked. Also to thank are the gardener and the pool guys. We also have to thank our driver Khun Sonn Mitt who was always reliable. We apprecited being invited to his home to meet his family. Thank you Mitt!
Honestly, each stay gets better and better. It really was very hard to say goodbye to everyone but the good news is that we will return next year.
On behalf of my partner Steven, his mother and sister, my brother Philip and his son Callum and also my sister Elsie I say THANK YOU and i say it with great sincerity.
SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR.!!!!!!!
Like i said last time, do yourself a favour and try the Rising Sun residence.....it will be a choice you will not regret.
