Idyllic

Just wonderful, a beautiful clean unspoilt beach. Lovely sand to walk on and lots of parking nearby.

A most amazing clean safe beach. Beautiful scenery. Easy access. Children are safe and can be let run around and play in sand dunes.

Whether you fancy a sandy stroll, a swim, or just watch the occasional plane coast ('Scuse the pun!) into Donegal International Airport, this is the beach you've been looking for. But sh!!! Don't tell anyone, or the place will be spoiled by tourists! This beach features pristine sand (thanks to the local beach maintenance team?), rocks and rock pools that simply beg to be clambered over, some beautiful swimming conditions and some impressive sand dunes. These dunes separate Carrickfin Strand from the Airport landing strip. If you visit during the summer, you will be treated to an abundance of wild orchids.

We had a couple of hours walk on this unspoilt beach, with nothing but the Atlantic waves to disturb the peace, fortunately the weather was kind to us.

The road down to this beautiful place takes you past Donegal Airport. You can get a great cup of coffee in the café there, especially welcome when you've been walking on a winter morning. The house magazine proclaims, with justifiable pride, that the aerial approach has been voted the second most beautiful of any airport anywhere in the world. It's certainly breathtakingly wonderful at ground level.
There's nothing a person can really say about Donegal. If you've been there, you know. If you haven't, the only way you could ever get an idea of what a special place it is is by going. Go!
I'm only going to say one thing about it, because clean, wild water, a vast expanse of golden, clean sand and stunning views of distant headlands and islands are what you get in Donegal. The thing is; practically every place you visit has similar rugged beauty, but its own unique slant on how it presents itself to you.
But here's the thing : you've got to the end of the strand and you turn round and it looks a long way and you wonder should you start back. Don't. Climb the dunes and head for the bluff that looks over towardsTory Island. You have a panorama of what makes Ireland so special. Even the runway on the only patch of flat land in sight just adds interest rather than spoiling the natural splendour. Even if you are already lucky enough to live in an area where there isn't much pollution, you are unlikely to breathe fresher air. If there hadn't already been a tripadvisor listing, we might have been tempted not to share it!
