“Great Beak”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

My wife and I have just returned from a long weekend break at the Ballyliffen Lodge & Spa.

What a beautiful location with sunning views!.

We received fantastic service from the friendly staff, they really could not do enough for us.

The food was excellent, with a great choice of menu.

Our room was comfortable and clean with all the facilities you would expect.

The perfect place to relax and unwind.

We will definitely be back (soon we hope).

Great Craic!

Attended our second wedding at the Ballyliffin Lodge in June and just like the first one everything was perfect. Ballyliffin Loge & Spa is the most perfect place for a wedding, its not everywhere you get a menu to choose from at a wedding. surrounded by stunning scenery this is the perfect location for sight seeing. Rooms are total value for money, Food in the bar & restaurant is tasteful, the breakfast is selective and enjoyable. Perfect hotel for any occasion.

Dear Guest, How wonderful to hear that you had an enjoyable time when you visited recently for a wedding reception. Weddings at the Ballyliffin Lodge are indeed a combination of the hotel itself and the beautiful surrounding area that we are located in. How lucky are we! We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Best wishes

Two night stay. Our room was luxurious, pool good but hot tub under maintenance. Near to lovely beach with view of breach from front terrace. Plenty of free parking. Unfortunately the food was below average, to the extent that we ate there one evening only and found a local pub for the other evening. Breakfast was equally poor. Such a shame and a real let down for the hotel which was otherwise brilliant.

Dear Guest, Many thanks for your mainly positive review of your stay with us here at the Ballyliffin lodge. We are very sorry that your food experience with us did not meet with your approval. Our food both in the bar and restaurant is generally off a very high standard and breakfast is a meal that we would receive particular positive feedback from. We do hope that you will revisit us here at the Ballyliffin Lodge as we would love for you to experience the high standard of food that we can and do deliver. Best Regards

Stayed at the Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa at end of March 2014. The staff were excellent, couldn't be more helpful or friendly. The food was so good and the hotel was perfect for the wedding. The short walk to the beach was great to walk off all the delicious food. would highly recommend this hotel for all occasions.

Stayed at the Ballyliffin on the weekend of 30th June. Arrived on a Sunday, which we tend to do as hotels are quieter then. The hotel has a lovely location, close to a bay and our superior room had great sea views.

Superior Room was very nice, very clean and with all the amenities you could require. However....I would expect a double superior room to have a double bed, not two single beds pushed together with a thin sheet over them, so you are always aware you are sleeping on two single beds. NOT what I would expect when you pay to upgrade to a 'superior' double room.

I mentioned this when checking out, but the girl seemed to believe it had a 'double mattress topper', which ours most definitely didn't ...because we went back up and checked it again - it was a little thin bedsheet.

Pillows were like two big extremely hard sandbags - difficult to sleep on. That was disappointing

Those were two negatives, in an otherwise very well appointed room

Bar/restaurant was quite nice...although it feels like you are really eating in a bar, as opposed to a restaurant. Food was, well...not bad, but certainly far from the nicest food I have had in a 4 star hotel (Donegal Redcastle surpasses it easily). The main fish dish was pretty good I have to say...which kind of made up for the poor starter and dessert. But definitely wouldn't rush back for the food, if I'm honest.

One big problem in this hotel, is the noise from the bar. On Sunday night there was live music which drifts up into all the rooms above it. We were on the second floor and at 12.30am, I could sing along to every song, while lying in my bed. Then later on, about 1.30am, the sound of people leaving the bar below, a bit of shouting and all the usual antics from people after a night out. God knows what its like on the first floor, right above the bar....ugh! Bring earplugs with you, I'm serious!

A Friday or Saturday night, when music goes on to the (very) early hours, must be horrendous. Don't get me wrong, I love my live music (big AC/DC fan)...but loud live music belongs in pubs in the centre of town, not in a quiet 4 star country hotel. When I come away for a quiet weekend at a secluded 4 star hotel, I am paying to get a bit of peace and quiet.

I think the problem this hotel has, it wants to be everything to everyone. It would like to portray itself as a secluded, luxurious, 4 star getaway hotel for people to escape to, for quiet breaks in the countryside. However at the same time, it also wants to attract the locals to its bar for live entertainment, loud wedding parties and late night revelry. Its very difficult for a hotel to achieve both these aims and that's why I'm afraid, it inevitably fails.

Clear up the late night noise problem from the bar. Create a totally separate restaurant, with a real restaurant ambience and bring in a top notch chef to serve up fantastic dishes in the restaurant...and...you will have a great hotel here! ;)

until such times, it will remain a hotel that's unsure of its target market and therefore will remain just an average hotel.

Room Tip: avoid the first floor above the bar
