“Wonderful stop!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2014

We were making our way to Waterford and saw this castle and decided to stop. We had no idea that it was a home, not just a castle. I was met by a dog named Oscar, who promptly told the owner Rebecca that there were visitors. She kindly invited us in and shared some of the castle's history with us. She is in the process of restoring the castle and seems to enjoy showing others of her passion. She loves seeing children and was nice enough to bring her horse out for the kids to pet. This was the best castle stop because it is not overflowing with tourists. It was a hidden gem for us!

Note: There is no fee for visiting, but she gladly accepts donations to help with the restoration, so go with a few Euro to help her out :)

“talk about hidden gems.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2014

This is the only Tudor castle in Ireland and it is awesome on the inside and out. Rebecca Armstrong, her late husband Campbell Black and their dog Oscar spent uyears brining this back to life. Rebecca has some fascinating tales to tell and is worth visiting just for herself. Ballarena in her younger years, writer, expert archaeological restorer, she is as awesome as the castle. What are you waiting for? Go.

One thing, there's no real opening schedule. If its a nice day drive on by. If Oscar is out by the road and the open sign is hung out, you won't do wrong by stopping in and visiting.

This is an ancient castle, be prepared to climb a precarious winding stair.

“Visit to the Castle”

Beautifully restored castle. Great location. Well worth a visit. Rebecca who restored and lives in the castle is very knowledgeable about its history and clearly enjoys showing visitors around.

“Home of the Bolyn (sp?) sisters”

Lovely old ruin right by the road. The local historian at nearby Killeen's Pub told us that some think that Ann sent a lady in waiting dressed like her to the Henry's executioner and then lived her life here. Who knows. Certainly was a bad event for one of them!
