“OK - but!!!”
Reviewed 2 July 2014 via mobile

We booked a two night stay in dunbrody with friends and were looking forward to a real treat - having heard so much about it. We got a lovely welcome from the staff and enjoyed a complimentary cocktail sitting out in the garden in beautiful sunshine. Our rooms, the breakfasts and service were all wonderful - but the biggest let down was the dinner on our first night. Food was only ok - certainly not to the standard of a top class restaurant. Kevin Dundon was not in the kitchen that night - and I wonder did this impact the quality of the food. The beef had no flavour whatsoever and the vegetables offered were little potatoes with pieces of cabbage mixed in - presented in a copper pot . We didn't eat in the restaurant the following night - and had a most wonderful meal in a local pub/restaurant - The Hollow. Would highly recommend that. The chefs in dunbrody could learn a thing or two from the chefs in The Hollow.
Pity - as the house is lovely and otherwise had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. Kevin is lucky to have such good staff running the house while he is not there - but needs to pay more attention to the kitchen staff.

Wanted to try this restaurant having heard about it for some time. What a disappointment! Simply not up the standard of the price expected. It is 'blue-book', but the dining experience was more akin to a B&B.

The wine was very well matched with the dishes, but the food itself was merely average and was expecting a lot more from it.
This brings me to my next big disappointment, the service. the staff were trained to the level of weddings or banquet waters without any modicum of class or demeanor.

I think were approached by nearly every member of the floor staff asking the same questions again and again, and even the more mature members ( I presume the managers) simply did not know enough about either the food or wine to justify the price of the meal. The table settings were a disaster, forks and knives tossed down on the table in any random order.

These are just a few of the low-lights for me, and I could go on , but the crux for me was when we were informed 5 times, from 5 different people that our souffles had be 'dropped' and we were offered no form of libation to calm our nerves during the 20 minute wait. We did suggest to one of the staff that a glass of desert wine would be nice, and it was fuzzily agreed that this would be 'on the house', this did not transpire as the manageress made sure that every item was included, and failed to apologize for the delay, or even ask how we enjoyed the meal when paying for the bill.

We will not be back until this hotel is either renovated or sold to someone with a strong belief in service and value.

Wanted to try this restaurant having heard about it for some time. What a disappointment. We opted for an early bird family dinner. Whilst the staff were pleasant, the service was chaotic and one of the nice young waiters told us he had only started, had no training and did not know where to put the cutlery. We ordered wine and had to ask for it four times, eventually getting it at the end of the main course. The accompaniments to the main course were boiled potatoes and a pot of cabbage. As none of us like cabbage we asked for an alternative and were told there was none. When we got the bill we were charged double for the aperitifs and it took an age to sort out. The food was very average at best. All in all a major let down.

Visited Dunbrody House with no booking and was advised the restaurant was fully booked, which was fine. However it was the horrible attitude of the staff , I think it was the manager telling it would be an hour for the bar food to be prepared and that we could try the pub that is associated with the hotel. We went down to the pub and ordered our food. 45 minutes later we still had not been served and diners who arrived after us were served before us. Once again we were met with rude staff and couldn't wait any longer so demanded a refund. The wine I ordere was €8.50 and was muck. Very disappointed. Never again.

Very pretty setting, welcoming staff. Some of the food was outstanding (e.g., scallops, buttermilk pancakes), other was mediocre (hake.) The hotel itself is frayed around the edges-could really use a sprucing up. The bed and room were pretty comfortable, the view from the room was lovely. The blaring lounge music which permeates the first floor rooms was jarring and off putting. It has potential but needs a lot of TLC to reach it.

I was actually quite apprehensive about this stay as the online reviews were incredibly mixed but I have to say that we had a lovely time. All the staff were very welcoming and extremely professional. On arrival we were upgraded to a superior room overlooking the garden which was a nice touch but there are no tea/coffee facilities in the room, which was a pity. Dinner was fine, a little underwhelming given their prices but the room and staff ensured it was all very pleasant. "The Local Pub" is fun and we enjoyed a few drinks there after dinner. It is a really lovely place but it would benefit from some love and attention - there are huge weeds in the flower beds, empty glasses in the drive way were still there the next morning and the windows are not sparkling....added to that the lack of a pool and gym would probably not entice me back on another weekend away but for a very quiet time in a beautiful part of the country, it has alot going for it.

Just back from a lovely weekend break at Dunbrody - third time to stay there. Staff are as warm and friendly as ever - efficient and welcoming. Food good especially in the bar. The house has suffered a little from lack of investment during the downturn and although comfortable and warm is bit tired around the edges. Would be nice to have coffee and tea making facilities in the bedrooms and power showers in the bathroom. Nonetheless, it was a pleasure to stay there - loved the birdsong and the quietness of the countryside, the bunny rabbits on the lawn and the great staff. Dunbrody is set in wonderful countryside with Hook Head and Duncannon beaches nearby for bracing walks. Great place for a short break.

Room Tip: A little extra for a top floor suite with balcony is well worth it
