Booked Dunbrody House as we was looking for a foodie night away. I was very impressed with the hotel and its surroundings... possibly because I was looking forward to the food, I hadn't given much too consideration to the hotel.
On arrival, there was no one to meet us at reception and we ended up wandering around the hotel until a member of staff approached us. We were directed to a spotlessly clean, large bedroom. The ground floor bedroom had two French doors that opened up to a quiet courtyard area at the rear of the hotel. There is a small pub on the grounds that also serves food. It is a very enjoyable and laid back area, just a one minute walk from the house. We had beautifully cooked prawns whilst sitting outside the pub.
On booking the hotel I had asked for the five course tasting menu and told that it would be available. On arrival in the restaurant we we told that the three course set menu was the only available menu that evening. I found the menu quite restrictive and the food was both good and bad. I had two spoons of the soufflé for dessert as it was not pleasant and simply tasted of egg. However, the starter of salmon with smoked salmon ice cream was one of the best starters we have had. We both had the confit of duck for main which was fine.
We retired to the residence bar after dinner and were served by an excellent bar man, although, he appeared to be the only person working in the bar which made it harder than it should have been to order a drink.
We had tea and scone the following morning on the beautiful terrace at the back of the house. Similar to the previous night, there was not many staff on duty and it took longer than it should to be able to place an order.
In short - relaxing hotel on beautiful grounds with excellent rooms, and reasonable food, however, service times were very slow.
