Owner description: Originally started in 1947 these gardens host a wide selection of rare and tender trees and shrubs. With over 130 different species the garden is a delight to both the keen amateur and the more serious horticulturist. Presently Kilmokea Gardens holds an Irish Heritage Garden certificate which is a justifiable reward for 65 years of creation and dedication. These Peaceful Gardens are laid out around a pretty Georgian house on Great Island overlooking the River Barrow. The house looks out over the walled garden which leads to the large five acre woodland garden & the Fruit & Vegetable potager growing produce for the Garden Café visitors and House Guests. There is a Fairy Village, the first of its kind in Ireland and 'The Myrtle Wood' children's story. Mr & Mrs Hedgehog and Freddie Fox await the arrival of the children to tell their story. To depict the historical influence of Kilmokea, there is a small Viking settlement and a Norman Motte & Baily. Our Café serves Organic and Wexford produce daily and our Craft & Fairy shop is open from 10 - 5pm too.

Arrived from snow covered England to snow covered Co. Wexford, Waterford Airport was closed which resulted in a 31/2 hour journey by coach from Galway and an unplanned collection from Mark (The Proprietor of Kilmokea Gardens) in treacherous conditions to get us to warmth and safety.
Such a warm, friendly country house with open fires and soft sofa's, after a whiskey, hot bath and delicious dinner, the traumatic journey seemed worth it.
The next morning, after a substantial full English breakfast, we enjoyed exploring the snow covered gardens, which once inside the walled garden was still quite staggering, despite the snow. We continued to enjoy the beautiful scenery, indoor swiming pool, jacuzzi and sauna all weekend and unexpectedly beyond, in between delicious lunches and dinners.
We would like to thank Mark and Emma for the wonderful friendly service they and their team provided during our stay. That included two failed attempts by Mark to get us to the airport in treacherous conditions before finally making the third two hour round trip. If ever a small country hotel deserved to do well, it is Kilmokea!

We've visited the lovely gardens at Kilmokea Manor beginning of May when all the beautiful rhododendrons were in bloom and quite enjoyed it. The gardens are divided into couple of parts - small but lovely arranged rose/ying yang garden, a vegetable garden and a more forest-like garden with a small lake and two observation hides. Quite a good collection of various trees, bushes and flowers, nice kept alleys and a lot of lovely touches - little bridges, statues etc. All in all quite a good attraction in the area, you can easily spend there 45 mins up to an 1,5h.
The property is quite easy to find, once on R733 from New Ross just follow the signs. Apart from the gardens there's also a nice tea-room located in the conservatory (nice view) along with a small craft shop. The only downside of the Kilmokea Gardens is quite high entrance fee - 7 Euro per person seems to be a bit too much for a small private garden. All info regarding opening times etc. is on their website http://www.kilmokea.com/garden.
