To be frank; this restaurant has ideas about itself above its station and it survives and thrives because this is Ireland, the land of the compliant and uncritical. Then again, they probably fawn over the local celebs when they turn in but for me, I dined a couple of times there and found the food passable, unmemorable and the service, at best, indifferent. One always got the distinct feeling that the owners felt you should be priviliged to be in their establishment and they were doing you the favour rather than the other way round. This type of nonsesne happens too often in Ireland. Do youself a favour and go to Woods and Byrne down the street where the food is better and the owner and staff very friendly and pleasant. Or on to the superb Wicklow Heather in Laragh. On the plus side, the place does have a lovely olde worlde atmsophere. Shame about the delusional, pretentious owners.

This lovely inn was recommended by a local as the most authentic pub in the Wicklow area, and we weren't disappointed. With a coal-burning fireplace at one end, a traditional bar in the middle and a delightful room originally designed for "ladies and escorts" (complete with a separate serving window), the Roundwood really does take the visitor back to another time. Our food was excellent, the Irish stew authentic and tasty, and the proprietor helpful and friendly. Another bonus: the drive down from the Dublin area via R115 and R759 through Sally Gap takes you through stunning wind-swept country that seems to roll away forever. Great, atmospheric pub.

really good "old Irish pub" atmosphere full of local characters, celebrities, and visitors. Excellent pint of Guinness professionally prepared by friendly staff. The food menu is extensive but pricey for what is essentially "pub grub" and the wine list is limited and again pricey. I would recommend it for a couple of quiet pints of a winters evening with some good company. It is warm and friendly and reeks of history and good gargle.

Having driven from Surrey to Holyhead, spent 3 hours on the ferry and an hour getting off it, negotiated Dublin rush-hour traffic and checked in to our hotel, what we needed was low pressure and good food. Which I got, in the form of a great goulash washed own with a couple of bottles of Weissbier, low-key but attentive service and reasonable prices. It was a very quiet Wednesday night, I imagine the place gets livelier towards the weekend, but for us it was just the thing.
