A friend of mine lives just up the road from Maiden Bradley, and until now, we've been hard pushed to find somewhere really nice to eat, let alone to stay. And then The Somerset Arms arrived!

The rooms are really lovely, nice one-off furniture bits, trendy wallpaper and a comfy bed, and really good value for money. And the food is really, really nice, with a wide range on offer for someone who is a self-styled foodie, and the portions are a good hearty size. Over two meals I had beef bourguignonne and sausage and mash with red cabbage, both of which were rich and full of flavour. The desserts are also diet-defying...

Also nice to see a wine list which extends beyond a full side of A4.

A wonderful weekend at this super and stylish find which had been mentioned to us by friends.

The owners made us feel at home right from check-in. In fact, they couldn't make any more of an effort - including ensuring we had tables reserved for dinner both nights just in case we needed them... which was fortunate as the place was packed. Food fantastic, service bang-on, attention to detail excellent.

Our room was spacious, spotless, and had super views over the frosty fields beyond. After a long walk at nearby Stourhead (if you're in the area - go!), coming back to the free-standing bath and a cosy bottle of red felt just perfect.

What I really liked about The Somerset Arms is that the owners have made the place stylish without compromising on the sense of friendliness and homeliness. We're already planning to go back with a gang of friends in the Spring and book out all the rooms.

I logged on to Tripadvisor and read your review about Sunday lunch at The Somerset Arms. I've just returned from a weekend in the country with friends and had lunch there. It was incredible. I'm not sure whether the previous reviewer is exaggerating for artistic effect, but I can safely say that this was one of the best roast lunches I've ever had. The place was packed with familes, young, funky couples and locals. I thought £12.95 for thickly cut piece of excellent local beef , a pile of roast potatoes cooked in duck fat, a massive Yorkshire pudding , horseradish cream and a bowl of perfectly-cooked vegetables. The gravy was sublime. I'm going back.
And from the buzz in the restaurant, it seems these guys have got a cracking formula just right

Having been dissapointed by similar establishments before, I was weary of booking at the Somerset arms. I was, however, persuaded by my girlfriend to try it out and I reluctantly booked in for a weekend.

Any fears I may have had were rapidly dismissed as soon as I entered the bar area. Far from the usual stuffy, nicotine stained interiors of many such places, the whole area was done out in a wonderful blend of old and new. The log fire roaring at the end of the room was particularely welcome after coming in from the English summer rain!

We were shown to our room by the very friendly Manager who's name escapes me (sorry!), and were both blown away by the room. Not only was it very large, but decked out just as stylishly as the bar area. The enormous stand alone bath tub in the bedroom was a nice touch and perfect to get into at the end of the day, and the equaly capacious bed made for a couple of nights of blissful sleep!

The highlight of our trip, though, had to be the food. The restaurant was very busy the first night we there and we hadn't booked. Despite this, they promised to get us a table as soon as one was available and we were more than happy to wait in the comfy lounge area and have a a drink whilst we waited.
My girlfriend and I both started with the chicken liver parfait which was hands down the best I have ever had, and then for the mains I had a sirloin steak (superb and cooked to perfection) and Sarah had the shoulder of lamb which was also superb (I know because I stole most of it...).For dessert: HAVE THE BROWNIE!!!!! That's all I'm going to say.

All in all we had a fantastic stay and will no doubt be back again. Friendly service, great rooms, better food. And make sure when you go to say hello to Henry, the resident Great Dane!

I cannot fault our stay at The Somerset Arms this weekend.

We battled through the floods from London and arrived jaded and thirsty. We were soon revived with a couple of Organic ice cold Ciders in the BEAUTIFUL bar area, complete with crackling log fire. BLISS.

The landlady Lisa showed us to our room which i have to say was on a par with the Soho Hotel, except with a MUCH nicer view (of the Beer Garden, apple trees and Boules area),and a fraction of the price. The bed was HUGE, the mattress pocket sprung (the princess and the pea would have got a terrific nights sleep here I can guarantee), the duvet Goose down and the cotton sheets Eygptian. The bath (in the bedroom - odd but it works - there was a seperate bathroom complete with luxury pampering goods and giant showerhead - very nice) was nice and voluminous, so a quick dip before dinner and we felt right as rain.

Dinner was a triumph, jugs of iced water tap water were delivered unrequested and kept topped up during the meal, we started with a MONSTER portion of potted crab (which I had a keen eye on with my roots being in Morecambe) which was superb, my companion had the Crispy Partridge with a sweet and sour dipping sauce - could not be faulted. Steak with the best onion rings I have ever eaten followed, and Coq au Vin - both outstanding.

Stinky old cheeses for pudding - a really good selection, all served at the perfect temperature, with a nice Port.

After we slept like babies in the worlds most comfortable bed we were subject to a perfect English breakfast with some of the best bacon I've ever eaten. (Apparently all the food is sourced within a 30 mile distance whenever possible.) The fires were once again lit to keep our toes and Henry the resident Great Dane toasty, and we flicked the vast collection of Saturday papers.

It was incredibly hard to drag ourselves away (although Lisa had sugegsted we visited the local Frome Cheese and Agricultural Show - which we did and had a brilliant time at) and I cannot wait to return - apparently they have plans for 3 more rooms and a treatment room which I am excited about trying out next time.

In summary - FIVE out of FIVE stars!
