Have just read previous reviews and the NEW landlord has only been there 11 weeks we have just stayed for two nights b and b at this country "pub" friendly greeting on arrival great breakfast and lovely clean room obviously the young landlord is by the reviews we have read got an uphill climb to bring the business round so
If like us you belong to the national trust then you are just 5 minutes from Stourhead and an hour from Mottisfont in Hampshire you have Salisbury Cathedral just down the road as well so a great place to stay in a great country location ignore out dated reviews and give a young couple the chance to turn round the business and we wish them all the best for the future and will visit again at some point

Under new management since May Bank Holiday, this pub (close to our B&B) served a good range of drinks and very nice pub food, so we ate there twice during our 4-night stay. The public bar was well-populated and friendly, and the restaurant side has good solid wooden furniture to eat at. Nice old building, friendly young staff, garden outside was wet underfoot due to the recent rain, all in all very low-key, English and pleasant.

Goodness, what a fall from grace. What was a lovely country pub has been, quite frankly, ruined by a rude landlord and average food. My advice is to avoid the place (which is what the locals are doing) and visit one of many excellent local pubs.

BE AWARE - the pub is under new ownership since the summer of 2013. What used to be a pub with great food, choice and atmosphere (incl live folk band on Sundays) has now disappointed in every respect. When we visited one Sunday the only choice was a selection of roasts. We were a table of 8 - all were disappointed with what was in effect a plate of slop. We used to regularly visit this pub for supper. We are now going elsewhere.

We stayed at the Somerset Arms for two nights over a wedding. The first night was a lads night with the groom before his big day. We were very warmly welcomed and were soon made to feel at home. The rooms were lovely, we even had a roll top bath in our bedroom. The food was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. Having taken over all the accommodation we were free to party on and were met with a delicious full English when we emerged the next morning. When we got back from the wedding, Karen and Kevin were waiting for us eager to chat and hear all about the day. Karen even offered to make us bacon or sausage sandwiches the next morning if we couldn't face coming downstairs for breakfast.
We left the next morning feeling like we had just spent a great weekend at a friend's house. Karen and Kevin are really what makes this place so special.

We arrived on 5 August, having booked one overnight a couple of months previously. The landlord and landlady had done a runner a few weeks ago and the brewery had parachuted in a new landlady named Carol. Before running away the previous people took everything with them that was not screwed down. The bar area is super but the accommodation is rather shabby, although Carol made us very welcome, apologising for the poor situation we found. Breakfast was rather lovely. Carol needs to be given some time to settle in. .
