“A hotel with two faces”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

The Axum Hotel in Mekelle has two faces: a new face and an old face.

The hotel’s new building is at the back of the compound. Its rooms are clean, spacious and equipped with all modern conveniences: large TV set, instant hot water and slippers. Apart from the rock hard mattresses, you could find yourself in any three-star hotel in the world. It lacks any charm.

The hotel’s old building is the main building in the compound. Its rooms are tired, raunchy and equipped with all ancient inconveniences: dodgy plumbing, water that is either very hot or not hot at all and stained carpets. With all the solid wooden furniture with an ‘Axum’ theme, you are beyond doubt finding yourself in northern Ethiopia. It has all the charm.

Our solution to this conundrum: stay in Axum Hotel’s new building and have dinner and drinks in Axum Hotel’s old building’s restaurant and bar or outdoor area. This allows for having hot showers when you need them and taking in the atmosphere of what used to be a majestic hotel when you can appreciate it.

In terms of other services: breakfast is nothing to get excited about but improves significantly when you ask the waiter for honey and chilli sauce to complement the stale toast on display. WIFI is available but erratic, as is the case everywhere in Ethiopia. Expect power cuts (although the hotel's generator kicks in quickly) and make sure you have enough cash to pay your hotel bill as the visa machine only gets fixed when it gets fixed.

Non stop building work, really bad food, pathetic breakfast buffet, largely unhelpful staff I stayed for approximately 10 days in total and could not wait to get out. It is clean and room are good in the new building but everything else is a disaster! 76 USD is a rip off!

The Axum Hotel was OK. The bedroom was a decent size with good facilities such as flat screen TV, plenty of sockets and toiletries- if things worked. We were in the new block and our key card never worked until our last day. No water was provided but there was a fridge - again it didn't work. Breakfast was ok with a reasonable choice and omelettes to order. The bar/snack bar was fine. There was a reasonable choice of food to order service was ok. Overall the hotel was better than I expected and I was quite pleasantly surprised

Room Tip: New block seems better for rooms

In the course of the 18 day trip we spent two nights at this hotel. We were in the new wing. The night before going off to sleep in tents in the Danikill and the night we came back from there. I very much agree with what the last two commenters have said. The first night there was no hot water in all the hotel . But , not knowing this to begin with , I went down and in a very African way they sent a man up with me "to fix it" when of course there was nothing he could do. The night we came back there was warm water but very weak pressure on the 5 and 6th floors. The breakfast was passable , the dinners not among the best we found in hotels. So though this is the best in town do not get your hopes up.

Room Tip: the lower floors may have better water pressure

We stayed at Axum hotel for two nights on our way further north into the Tigray region. The hotel is decent and is nothing to write home about. Upon entering, I noticed that the entrance and lobby only had one sofa to sit on. I thought this was a bit weird since the lobby is so huge and there is a lot of wasted space. Since most of the people that were checking in all arrived at the same time (the flight from Addis had landed) I expected the staff to be more prepared and ready to handle a smooth check in for guests.

The rooms were simple and clean. Again, nothing fancy and nothing to write home about. We only stayed because there was no better option.

The last day of our stay I went down for breakfast and was planning to go back to my room to freshen up before our long drive north. After my breakfast (around 9am) I went back to my room to find that the cleaning lady had already come in my room and stripped the bed!! I was completely shocked and really upset as my suitcase and clothes were on the bed. I asked the staff how this could be since check out was not until 11am. The staff seemed unconcerned. They offered an insincere apology and went about their business. For this reason, I give them a poor rating. I think the staff just doesn't really care.

The infrastructure in Ethiopia is still in its infancy, there are power cuts and low water pressure frequently. Don't expect high quality fixtures and fittings they may be present but not actually working. Try to maintain a sense of humour when there is no hot water for four days and the shower rail falls on your head each time you get in the shower when there is hot water, but they do fold the end of the loo roll into a triangular point daily!!! The staff try hard with limited resources. After two weeks at the Axum Hotel if you didn't concentrate on the positive you would be really downhearted, so just talk football to the staff and hope the lift is working and the sun is shining. This is my third visit but there is little else on offer.

Room Tip: Keep to lower floors there is more water pressure for shower, always in the new block.

The place was clean, comfortable, providing all services and with helpful staff. It seemed a bit disorganised at rush hour in the morning before departure, but other than that everything was ran smoothly.
We couldn't connect to the wifi in the new building, not even at the reception so we used the one available at the old reception area in the other building.
We felt safe and comfortable and the location of the hotel is very good, with shops and restaurants not more than five minutes walking distance.
It was not a cheap option, but with the foreigners' higher price in all services, I would say it was expected.
