This is a mine with a difference. Not only is it open to the public, you can also carry out some mining for the local amethyst yourself during your hour long visit and even become a share-holder in this unique business. Developed as a non-intensively extractive mine (the only tools used are pick-axes and the amethyst sold on in small quantities to the local jewellery market or to visitors). The mine provides visitors with a guided tour comprising a brief explanation of the geology of the area and the mineral deposits and then an opportunity to mine for amethyst yourself - and if you find one (and there are many around) you get to keep it for no extra charge above the admission price provided it is no bigger than you can hold in your palm - find a bigger one and you could still pay to keep it.
The mine is located at the end of an easy 2.5km walk from the car park and is open all year round - albeit with reduced hours at some times. We found the guide informative and friendly and that it made for an enjoyable afternoon visit. There is also a cafe near the mine entrance which is where you can buy your entry tickets from. The mine itself is a surface mine though the intro talk is held in a covered hut. Talk over you are issued a little pick at the mining area to start digging (there is a covered area too to dig in if the weather is bad). There is also a small shop.
