“A Fun Activity And You Get To Mine Your Own Amethyst”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

This is a mine with a difference. Not only is it open to the public, you can also carry out some mining for the local amethyst yourself during your hour long visit and even become a share-holder in this unique business. Developed as a non-intensively extractive mine (the only tools used are pick-axes and the amethyst sold on in small quantities to the local jewellery market or to visitors). The mine provides visitors with a guided tour comprising a brief explanation of the geology of the area and the mineral deposits and then an opportunity to mine for amethyst yourself - and if you find one (and there are many around) you get to keep it for no extra charge above the admission price provided it is no bigger than you can hold in your palm - find a bigger one and you could still pay to keep it.

The mine is located at the end of an easy 2.5km walk from the car park and is open all year round - albeit with reduced hours at some times. We found the guide informative and friendly and that it made for an enjoyable afternoon visit. There is also a cafe near the mine entrance which is where you can buy your entry tickets from. The mine itself is a surface mine though the intro talk is held in a covered hut. Talk over you are issued a little pick at the mining area to start digging (there is a covered area too to dig in if the weather is bad). There is also a small shop.

“Great experiece”
Reviewed 10 May 2014 via mobile

Love traveling on the Pandolino to the mine. Also enjoyed walking down the many levels to the actual mining site. Such an experience! The actual mine site where visitors get to dig the the amethyst was rather commercialised. It seems rather "made-up" for visiting. But I've found 8 amethyst, of which 2 were pure ones (best grades), a sense of achievement!

“Afternoon at the Amethyst Mine”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

We went as part of our package from the week in Luosto. After a short snowmobile ride, we arrived at the site for a short educational presentation and tea. From there they walked us down into the mine (well lit steps) to a flat area with open dirt and rocks. With small hammers, we each were able to dig for gems and all found several small ones and were able to keep a few of them (large ones had to be purchased). My family enjoyed it (kids aged 13 and 9) as they love rocks. I felt however like it was a little rigged, almost like they planted the gems in the dirt.

“Seaching for my own amethyst!”
Reviewed 4 April 2014

I took a bus from the Rovaniemi bus terminal to Luosto where I visited the Amethyst mine. The trip is about 1 hour and 45 minutes from pick up to drop off. I crossed the street to the Mine Shop where I was picked up by car and driven to the Pendolino which than took me to the mine. It was very interesting digging for the unpolished stone and I did find one which I got to keep. Going down into the mine was fun too. You may think it expensive when you see an polished stone for 5 euro in the gift shop but looking for one yourself was the best part and worth the money spent for the experience.

“My precious”
Reviewed 7 March 2014 via mobile

We set off for the amethyst mine early morning and then we took the special amethyst vehicle up to the mine which is 500 plus metres above sea level.

After which we had a debrief on the mine and amethyst. Then it's the fun time digging the amethyst with diggers. Luckily our guide ask us to go to places where people dig before as the amethyst is usually deeper inside.

And boy we found some real solid amethyst gem hee hee. Fun.

Although tour is short but it was fun and entertaining.
