“Solid, comfortable hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2014

This is a purpose built hotel and very practical - it is comfortably warm, the food is surprisingly good (considering where you are) and there are all mod cons.

I had two negative issues:
Firstly the name - most people don't see the Northern Lights. We were told on arrival they hadn't been seen for weeks and cloud cover meant we had no chance that week. It's setting guests up for disappointment to call this 'Northern Lights' holiday - really it is just an adventure in the Arctic Circle - where a few lucky people will see the lights.

My second issue was the lack of information about all the activities there were to do in and around the hotel - we were given extremely little information about when where and how to hire equipment and what is available... our 'guides' simply weren't around and not that interested in us. As a result, we only found out about a tobogganing slope and where to hire cross-country skis as we were leaving. Shame.

If you are thinking of going on this tour "in search of Santa" Do not hesitate to book. We took our son who is 7 on the four day "Magical Interlude" tour. I had read some bad reviews before we left and was concerned that we had spent so much money and it might not be very good.. how wrong I was. The holiday was perfect from start to finish. Santa's special elves were excellent. I must say a special thank you to "Snowy Bowy" who my son fell in love with! I paid the optional extra for her to read him a story in our hotel room. It was a total surprise for him and he raved about it ever after! Snowy Bowy was "his" special elf. They sell toys of the elves at the hotel and how happy and amazed he was that she had ensured Santa left the "Snowy Bowy" toy in his stocking that Christmas! All the activities were so well planned, husky and reindeer rides in snowy terrain, perfect! I must also say thank you to Tyler our tour guide, who was excellent, and always kept the fun going on our tour around the various activities. The hotel was okay. The food not perhaps the best. They have a Karaoke disco on at he hotel.. as I find out the first night we were there! Very loud and I could hear every song that was sung until the early hours in our room.! Luckily my son & husband slept through it all.. i wasn't so lucky! The staff there were all very friendly and polite. As a last note, some friends of my sons were recently discussing whether Santa really existed. My son told me how silly they were being.. of course Santa was real, I mean... he had actually met him! Of course he had. Perfect.

Room Tip: Try to ensure that you don't have a room over the Karaoke Disco!!!!!

We spent 5 nights in Luosto looking for the northern lights in February 2013. Whilst we were unlucky with cloudy weather we had the most fantastic time.
The hotel was great with large rooms and balcony views to die for. The rooms also had drying cabinets for your snow boots and clothes which was a real bonus.
Food was very good with a large variety of meal options from the buffet style dining. We had breakfast and evening meals.
One of the meals was in a traditional Lappish Kotta (Circular log cabin) where the wild salmon was cooked over an open fire. This was the best salmon I have ever tasted and the atmosphere was just magical as there was no electricity, just candles.
I would recommend the hotel and will certainly be going back next winter.

Room Tip: We had a room at the front of the hotel

We stayed here for 4 nights hoping to see the Northern lights, but unfortunately, to no avail. The cottages were very nice and comfortable though, everything worked perfectly and they have a good breakfast buffet. We definitely enjoyed our stay here, although we feel that the Aurora alarm is a bit expensive at EUR10 a night.

I took my 82 year old mother (who is very fit for her age) on a week's activity trip with The Aurora Zone. The hotel was very nice - the rooms were a good size and comfortable. The swimming pool and spa area was a nice addition and we both had a good massage very reasonably priced. The hotel was let down a bit by the evening buffet - the food wasn't great quality and occasionally was in short supply. Luosto is very small with just a couple of shops and restaurants and everything is easy to walk to. It is possible to view the Northern Lights on the lake behind the hotel - we were lucky to see them on 3 occasions. The hotel does provide an Aurora alarm but we found this was not reliable and it is best to just go out if the sky is clear.

We took our family of 4 with kids aged 13 and 9 to Luosto in February during winter break and had an awesome time. Our 7 day trip was part of a package from Activities Abroad which included the following activities: snowmobiling to amethyst mine, ice fishing (which we decided not to do), cross country skiing , dog sledding, reindeer sleigh ride and nighttime hike in snow shoes in search of the Northern Lights. We didn't see the Northern Lights because it was too cloudy that week but loved all of the activities. In addition to the planned activities, we spent a couple hours every day at the ski resort which was a short walk from the hotel learning to ski. Each of had multiple lessons. By the end of the week, we all felt comfortable on skis. We were there the week before their busy week and virtually had the entire slopes to ourselves. The hotel rooms were clean and adequate but not luxurious. The meals were provided buffet style for breakfast and lunch and the food was consistently good -- not great but our family was happy with the choices. Our son has a life-threatening allergy to nuts and the staff was very careful and helpful which is worth it's weight in gold for us.

Activities Abroad was helpful in scheduling all the activities, arranging transportation to/from the airport and providing the winter gear. However, we brought our own winter/ski gear and were glad we did because the boots and snow-mobile suits they provided were not as comfortable (adequate but if you have your own, bring them).

All in all, I highly recommend the hotel and entire Luosto experience. We are considering going back next year and if we do, will make the arrangements ourselves instead of going through a tour company and just do the activities the kids want to do again.

Well-situated near areas where you can do winter sports like skiing, snowmobile, etc. Room is rather comfortable, I stayed at ground floor which means snow is right outside my doorstep, nice experience. But can be very cold when it's snowing especially. nice winter scenery from breakfast room. Overall, an enjoyable stay.
