Castello Orsini Hotel
Reviewed 8 April 2013

We stayed in this hotel only for one night but we enjoyed the place very much. The staff is very nice and polite. The rooms are fantastic it seems like living in another century. The castle is surrounded by a medieval atmosphere.
The spa and the pool are the jewel of the castle.

The hotel upon arrival is quite impressive. We found the elevator that took us to the main floor and had difficulty finding the reception.Signs should be posted.Check in went well reception was very courteous and friendly.

The rooms are quirky ours had 2 levels, the bathroom was extremely small and there was not hot water just warm. The taps in the sink did not work correctly. The heating system was on but was very hot during the night and could not find the controls. No windows would open
The carpet was old and as well as the bed cover........
The couch looked tired on the main floor.
Poor lighting in that room
The view was lovely from our room .
The hotel itself is not what i would expect from a 5 star. There was no flowers anywhere. No music at night on a week-end ,no candles nothing exciting. In the evening they did light one of the fireplaces which gave a warm atmosphere. They had some lovely rooms that went around the castle on one level.
There is no bar so you must request what you want and they will serve you at a cost!!!!!!
The restaurant was done stairs and dinner was a set menu. The food was OK but again not 5 star,A bottle of wine cost 43,00 Euro which i found quite expensive.
Breakfast was done very poorly. No fresh fruit, juice watered done but they did have some good pastry's.
The pool area was not at all impressive, nor the sauna or the steam in a other part of the complex.
Being that its rated as 5 star i would give it a three, certainly not 5.

If you are thinking to go to Castello Orsini at Nerola, especially using a move box, give yourself a different option!!! We used our move box to go spend a night at the Castle and were disappointed with the whole experience. Our room was outside the castle and really nothing special, yes in the grounds within the Castle walls, but not much else beside that. The first room that was offred to us had no view and poor decoration, certainly it did not make one feel like being in any sort of Castle. We asked to be moved and we were offered a very similar room but a bit more charming. It was one of the coldest weekend of the year and we were glad to find a very good heating system in the room. We also had a bit of a view, nothing breathtaking but not a wall!!! We had to walk to get into the Castle to visit the location, to hang out there, and for breakfast. We enjoyed an afternoon by the fire place in the space open for guests in the castle. It was relaxing and lovely. We were considering having dinner at the castle but opted to skip that after trying their hot chocolate! We ordered two hot chocolate and we paid 12 EUROS for it! Unheard of especially and MAINLY because it was a watered down, unflavored chocolate, pale grey, no dark brown whatsoever. It tasted as the instant one you get from the little bags. Fine for a train station in the middle of no where not at a 5 star. I would accept it for half the praice and saved this review maybe, but it was an insult to common sensibility. We were right in skipping dinner because the breakfast was just not a five star hotel breakfast. It made you want to get ready, go to your car, get outside the castle and buy yourself a real coffee!!! I mean we are in italy, i don't ask much, but a good espresso it' s a must!or not???? If you end up going to Nerola, though, and to the Castle try to go eat at the family restaurant we found in town, there are only restaurants in Nerola, and this is the oldest one, i don't remember the name. It's the one that does not serve Pizza. They make unbelievable fresh made pasta! And as you may think, yes i do enjoy good eating!
The Staff at the Hotel was not particularly accommodating and did not show sincere care when i pointed out that the picture of the room that was shown in the move box brochure was of a large beautiful suite with fire place, very very very very misleading!

From the castle you can enjoy a wonderful view of mount Terminillo in a clear day!

Impressive castle with an awe-inspiring countryside! Lovely environment if you want to get an idea of what living was like in the past centuries without using a time machine! We stayed there as a family and the staff was very accomodating, the rooms are well heated, spacious and elegantly furnished. It can be a bit tiring to get around since there are cobblestones and stone steps but there is also a very modern lift that connects the garden and parking area to the main level of the hotel. The restaurant is lovely yet a bit pricy. The food is good and the staff a bit disorganized but very kind. The guided tour is well worth taking, just remind the extremely pleasant and well-informed guide to wait for the entire group to be present in each room before giving her presentation.

We booked a room he for ne year eve. We were very surprised to find out that was almost a real castle. We spend a week on November in Chianti region traveling, and stopped mostly in castles but this one just exceeded all expectations.

Castle is just 40 min drive from Rome. Well furnished, and decorated. Each room differs from other and you will in almost as in medieval atmosphere.

As part of NY eve package we had a dinner which was very delicious and tasty.

The castle has a swimming pool and good spa center. It looks like a good place to come for weekend form Rome

When i told my friends we would be staying in a castle on our last night in Europe after an 11 night cruise, they apparently did not believe me until they arrived. The hotel is located about 50 miles from the airport, and 1.5 hours from the cruise port, surrounded by beautiful countryside. This property was built in the 11th century, magnificent stone work complete with moat and turrets! It is an easy walk into the small village which has some small restaurants, local bars, post office, bank etc. The property has a beautiful heated pool with a roof which is opened up in the warmer months and spa appointments available with advance notice.
The gardens are pretty, and we nibbled on pomegranates which were dropping off the trees. Take note of the magnificent artifacts, paintings, frescos, ornate ceilings, tapestries and suits of armor located all over the castle. Every room is unique, some are huge and ornate with 2 levels, some more simple, but I believe all bathrooms are updated, some extremely modern with heated towel rails and modern tubs or showers, some more rustic with stone walls and wood ceilings. I would caution anyone who has issues walking as there are lots of (Beautiful) cobblestones, steps and stairs, but may these be an issue for some. There is a very modern but amazingly well hidden elevator which goes between the garden and main level only The internet was very fast, and reasonable (for Europe) at EUR10/hr. the room had individual units for heat/air which worked very effectively. We had both lunch and dinner in the dining room, expensive by American standards but a good, although not gourmet meal. We would have liked to have some lighter options for lunch, something other than the set menu such as just a soup/salad, Mozzarella/tomato or a Proscuitto sandwich. The pasta for both lunch and dinner was outstanding, and wines reasonably priced. The breakfast was an extended continental, excellent coffees, juices, cakes, cold cuts, cheese, cereal, breads, yogurt etc. MUCH more than a basic European breakfast and I am amazed at the reviewer who was. "upset" because there were no eggs. Get real people, this is not the Waffle House.
Oriana and her staff were wonderful, taking care of all our needs including assistance with tours. A truly unique and wonderful experience.
As someone with 20+ years of International hotel experience, i would like to address some of the other reviews
I did not find the hotel to be "musty" but an ancient castle with thick stone walls and old wood does not smell the same as a contemporary steel building or an old building where the historical structure has been covered with ugly plaster, siding, drywall or cement. In addition "musty" does not mean mould, and I saw no evidence of any mould, fungus or damp walls. Yes, a few draughts but nothing that the characteristics of this unique place did not over ride. The sheets were fresh and anyone who thinks that hotels change sheets every day is under a misconception - unless you are staying at a very expensive 5 star hotel and even then many are now asking you to indicate if you want your sheets changed daily. In addition, please consider the effect on the environment with excessive water use and energy consumption.
Please also note that many reviews are very old, the hotel has been through an extensive 11 year renovation and under new management for the last 2 or 3.
And no, you cannot put a star rating on this magical place. If you are looking for a unique experience away from the hustle and bustle of Rome where you can go back in time and get to sleep in a real castle, don't miss this. I do wish we had spent at least 2 nights to see more of the area - 4 of my party however did stay longer and had a very enjoyable tour in a private car with driver arranged by Oriana.

Room Tip: Some rooms are larger than others, make sure you understand that every room is different and unique...

We choised this Castello for our wedding anniversary and made the wedding ceremony. It was really beautifull - we were Prince and Princes. On the one hand - this is live history. Hotel is in the Castel of 10th Century, inside this wonderful building we saw a lot of historical pieces. There is even a thron - and you can make photos as a King or a Queen, or together :-) on the another hand in the hotel we found really clever and friendly staff. Especially we would like to thank Oriana Cobisi - manager of our wedding and Luigi Paulucci Baroukh - Master of the Ceremony and talented tenor. So, we can strongly recommend to make a miracle in your life and choose Castello Orsini Hotel.
