Everything has been covered by previous reviews so I will keep it short. This "hotel" is filthy. On arrival our room smelt of urine and when we reported it to the Olympic Rep you couldn't help get the feeling that the excuses were well rehearsed. Bed clothes and towels are stained (with God Know's what).

Kostas (a fortune, as we nicknamed him) was miserable and obviousley a tightwad, there was no lighting in any of the communal areas making it especially trecherous at night. But fair dues after a power cut on the Island he did put 3 TEA LIGHTS on the stairs!!
There is a free minibus shuttle to the beach and salt water pool and it is lovely but we were constantly asked if we wanted cocktails, drinks and food etc, to te point were the others in my party left and walked back to the resort!

The pool area, back at Bastas, is nice but be warned if it rains then this is closed so as it is the only manned bar in the place (I refuse to call it a hotel) you are stuck for somewhere to go as there is no way you would want to sit in your room.

Paxos is a lovely island and we had a great time but we would definatley not recommend this place, the standard of cleanliness isn't acceptable pay a little bit more and stay somwhere else!!

This was our first package holiday. We travelled with Olympic. Transfers were good and hassle free.
The Bastas Complex is well maintained but the rooms are basic. However, this is reflected in the price and you shouldn't expect 5 star facilities at that price.
The room was comfortable. The kitchenette was small and basic but could have done with a little more equipment. We'd read reviews before we went and we found it useful to take the basics, such as washing up liquid, sponge, tea towel, etc... However, we managed to cook four decent meals that turned out quite well. Only one toilet roll is provided in the room (no more will be provided throughout your stay), its worth taking some of your own.
The swimming pool and bar are very relaxing and well positioned. There were always available sun loungers. The bar staff are very friendly and willing to help.
A daily courtesy shuttle to the beach owned by Bastas was very useful and appreciated and they also put on a couple of entertainment nights.
The location of the hotel in relation to Lakka is very good, within walking distance of the town, bus stop to Gaios & Loggos and near a couple of small beaches.
Paxos is a very small island and well suited to those who enjoy relaxing by a pool or on the beach. However, we found that we were a bit restless by the end of the week, as we had seen/done all the island had to offer.
The Olympic Rep was very helpful and friendly, always on hand for local knowledge, help and any assistance. The trips are generally good value for money. We recommend the sunset trip to Eremitis. Definitely hire a boat and have a day travelling around the island by sea.

My husband and I returned yesterday from a two week stay at Bastas. Having not done a package holiday before, we weren't sure what we were letting ourselves in for having read some of the reviews on here. But we were extremely happy and really liked the hotel.

The room was basic but clean. Beds were comfy. Although temps got up to 39 degrees, we didn't use the air con at all. Not to save money, but there was enough of a breeze most of the time and if we wanted to be cool then we would have gone to Wales instead!

Every evening we enjoyed sitting on our balcony watching the world go by as the sun went down. It was so relaxing and the pace of life in Paxos is definitely perfect for a
holiday.

The kitchen was small, but everything to cook basic food was there and a door to separate it from the bedroom was great. The local supermarket was basic (and expensive) but had everything that we needed to get by.

Needed to buy our own toilet roll, washing up liquid etc like all other guests, but you must remember that Paxos is a small island that has to import everything and things can be expensive. If the hotel supplied everything then their costs would go up massively and people would be put off going. Just be organised enough to take the basics with you.

Unlike most guests that seemed to spend all day at the pool or at the Bastas beach resort, we went for walks most days from out the back of the hotel and up the hill to find our own quiet coves. If you make the effort to walk around this very small accessible island you will be rewarded. That's part of the pleasure of Paxos - getting away from the usual kind of holiday maker that cannot seem to think for themself and wants everything given to them on a plate!

I would definitely go back to Paxos and stay at Bastas again, but maybe earlier/later in the year when there aren't so many other tourists around. The staff were lovely and always cheery and joking and laughing with us. They had the personal touch which is missing in so many hotels these days. And it's nice to think that the profits are going to some nice, hardworking family, not a fat cat in an air conditioned office hundreds of miles away!

In response to an earlier review, surely a true reflection can only be given if it is up to date!! Having stayed at the Bastas twice this year, once last year and once the year before, I have seen some positive changes. Firstly, the staircase leading to the the pool that was in need of repair last year is now in good order. The old sun loungers have been replaced with new ones as have the sun umbrellas. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the pool area!! Also, I do believe that work on toilets by the pool has been started.
The rooms are basic .....but not falling down around your ears as some would have you believe and should you have an issue with anything in your room either Tracy the rep or Kostas are always more than happy to try and sort it out.
The price I have paid for my 2 holidays in Paxos this year have been a bargain to what I could expect to pay in most other places. That bargain has meant I have got to spend time in accommodation that met all my needs with extremely friendly hosts, a stunning swimming pool and all just 2 minutes walk into beautiful Lakka.
What more do you want?!!!

Stayed at the Bastas Complex for two weeks in September 2009.

Paxos is a beautiful & scenic island. Lakka is also a fantastic village which comes highly recommended.

I am sorry to say that the Bastas Complex does not come highly recommended. I have stayed on Greek Islands on may occasions previously, therefore, I accept that most accommodation can be described as traditional and basic. It is not a true reflection to describe the Bastas Apartments as traditional and basic. The Bastas is shabby, neglected and was very dangerous in parts, when we stayed there.

The stone steps to the swimming pool were extremely loose and the wooden steps had almost rotten away. We were warned by other guests as to how lethal the stairway to swimming pool was at that time. Perhaps prospective guests should view the photographs of the steps, which have already been posted by previous visitors. I regret that I did not view these photographs prior to our holiday. It was stated that Olympic Holidays have a Health & Safety Manager, who checks such properties. It is very difficult to accept this statement as factual information. Furthermore there are no toilet facilities at the swimming pool and guests had to negotiate these lethal steps to return to their rooms and use the facilities.

When we arrived at the Bastas, we were issued with a leaflet warning us about the dangers of exposure to the sun Despite this warning there were only a couple of broken and dangerous umbrellas with all their spokes exposed around the swimming pool. The problem was mentioned to the rep. Tracey by a number of guests.

Although Tracey probably did her best, the result was that a few broken and dangerous umbrellas, without bases, were strapped with wire, to the fence. These broken umbrellas had mainly been thrown away by previous guests. They all immediately blew away, despite the fact that the Albanian girl working at the swimming pool worked extremely hard. She was 'fighting a losing battle'. The umbrellas really had to be seen to be believed. The sun loungers were in extremely poor condition also. One of the female guests staying at the complex, gently pushed her fingers through a number of the sun loungers, as they were 'ripe'. She stated that she did not wish to see anyone injured.

The rooms were very poor indeed. There was no working surface to make a sandwich. The sheets on the bed may have been clean, but they were so old that they were 'grey' and worn. Everything in the room was old, broken and poorly maintained. The furniture on the balcony was tied together with pieces of string and very quickly collapsed. When guests in the neighbouring apartment left, we exchanged the balcony table and chairs. This furniture was in an even worse state and again was not useable.

Guests arrive at the Bastas Complex and are issued with one toilet roll. Guests then have to buy their own. We arrived at the Bastas Complex in the early morning and we were immediately sent to the hardware shop to buy teatowels and dishclothes. Nothing is provided.

On a more positive note, there is transport provided each morning to a scenic local beach, where the Bastas family also own the amenities. We always found the beach and restaurant to be a very pleasant.

In fairness, our holiday at the Bastas Complex was not expensive, therefore expectations should not be high. It is, however, beyond comprehension as to how the hotel as been awarded 3 stars. If you were to think 'Youth Hostel' - (uncared for Youth Hostel) you would not be disappointed. Spend as little time as possible in the hotel and enjoy Paxos and the beaches. You will then not be disappointed.

Firstly let me get this off my chest.... It annoys me intensely when I read picky, pedantic reviews of places that people paid rock bottom prices to stay in for a week. Seriously, what do you expect? The Four Seasons? That said as a regular traveller I would rather stay in the family run Bastas than a soulless five star any day.

OK rant over! We travelled with Olympic Holidays taking the night flight from Gatwick to Corfu. Waited several hours at the port for the hydrofoil to Paxos, trying to sleep on metal seats which was fine for us, but for young families it could be hard work. After a spectacular sunrise we boarded the boat, lovely hour long trip to the port of Gaios then a coach to Lakka and Bastas. We went self catering and straight away we were impressed with the room which has a decent balcony overlooking the little road into the village. Couldn't quite see the sea but could see the masts of the yachts! I've stayed in much smaller rooms for more money (Paris hotels for example) and this was clean, bright and functional. The microwave was grubby but we ignored it. Plenty of coat hangers which is always a bonus. We slept like logs in our little twin beds, which weren't particularly hard at all. Didn't bother with air con, fine with the doors open and one sheet.

The pool at Bastas is very, very good for a three star. Its elevated position means lovely views and a nice breeze. Plus there's great service from Gaby and Babbis at the bar. If you like a mojito when the sun goes down, Babbis is your man. If you have a disability the stairs would be an issue, but for able bodied people they are no problem. I agree that a toilet area at the pool would be handy, but it's not far to the rooms.

The free daily shuttle bus to Manadendri beach leaves at 11 and comes back between 4 and 5 daily and is really worth taking. Manadendri is just a few kilometres from Lakka and has all the facilities you could want. Costas and his family who run Bastas, also run the great amenities at the beach.

For us though, the highlight of our holiday was hiring a little motorboat to travel around the island. This is unmissable! Swimming off the back of your own boat or pulling up on any beach for a picnic is truly magic. We hired through Routsis travel at the port in Lakka, which offered a cheaper deal than the Olympic rep. On that note the Olypic rep Tracey is lovely, lives on the island and has great local knowledge.

My top restaurant recommendations if you like fresh fish is Nautilus in Lakka, tables at the waters edge a little bit away from the main port. If you go to Anti-Paxos (you'll never see clearer water!) eat up the hill at the Bella Vista taverna, the grilled Octopus is great and the view is stunning.

My favourite village was Loggos because it's so scenic, but Lakka has a much better selection of places to eat and drink and has a much livelier feel because of all the yacht people who moor up there. For such a spectacularly beautiful and quite exclusive island, you're unlikely to get a better deal in Paxos than Bastas.

I don't know what some people expect in Greece... YES.. the rooms for Self Catering are basic.. but how much time to do you spend in them? Our room had a view of a wall with some vines.. we didn't care... we were hardly in the room. Lakka is such a great unspoilt village and the Bastas is ideally situated.. literally a minute from the village centre. The pool bar area is never too busy and lots of secluded beaches are within walking distance. Yes go on the bus to the Manendandri beach.. but it gets busy. For a no frills.. perfectly restful holiday this is the place. Also the Olympic rep there Tracy is fabulous!.
We had a great week.. couldnt' ask for more.. the staff are friendly and helpful. The bedding wasn't changed int he week.. however I am sure if you asked them to they would.
