“Wedding at Palagama”
Reviewed 4 October 2013

My husband and I stayed at Palagama for 5 nights in May/June. Overall we had a very pleasant stay. The main purpose for our visit was to get married, and although the ceremony was far from smooth (due to the inadequacies of the local registrar), all of the staff at Palagama did all they could to make the event as special as possible for us, and have all given us very special memories, with special thanks to Sham for taking the photos, and the chef for the video footage, and Eric and Roshan for being our witnesses! Although we couldn't have our dream wedding on the beach, because of the high winds, we had the ceremony outside one of the villas which was beautifully decorated for us. We then had a private dining experience outside of the villa, which included an array of fine seafood, and was of the best meals we have ever eaten. We were then put up for the night at the villa at no extra cost, in fact the cost of the wedding was extremely cheap, especially considering the amount of effort that was put in by all of the staff. We cannot fault them for the care and attention they gave to us.

Although we went during the windy season we still had some hot weather, and enjoyed mainly having the resort to ourselves, so although I would love to come back in high season to experience the dolphin and whale watching, and snorkelling, it did have its advantages to visit during the low season. We really did feel very special with attentive service from all of the staff, especially Sham who catered for our every whim with a smile always on his face (which we both miss!).

Every meal we had was exceptional. The breakfast was so substantial that it kept us going until dinner most days, and the dinner menu was always different. The local Sri Lankan curries were amongst the best I had during our month stay in Sri Lanka.

We will definitely be returning to Palagama beach. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the beach cabanas and resort beautiful (especially the outside shower and private sun lounging area), and the food delicious. Yes there is a power station nearby but that really doesn't hinder the overall view (and can't be seen from the resort) , and yes, there is lots of rubbish on the beach, although we never saw any directly to the front of the resort, but this makes walks on the beach interesting as you can do a spot of beach combing!

We would definitely recommend anyone to stay at this report...we certainly hope to see all the staff again as soon as we can make it back to Sri Lanka :o)

Many many thanks to all of the staff for making our stay and wedding a special one

My friend and I stayed at Palagama Beach Resort for 5 nights in August. The beach cabana was huge and very breezy, and I appreciate the hot water in the showers, which many other resorts I had checked did not offer. We were planning to kitesurf but the winds were not cooperating, so we spent a bulk of the time lazing around the resort - the pool area, the beach, and our cabana. Very chill and laid-back vibe. Security was never a concern, and the staff were never intrusive but always ready to provide assistance with whatever we needed. The food was great and the breakfast/dinner buffet spreads are very extensive; for lunch i'd particularly recommend the burger, which was amazing! Would also recommend heading over to Udekki Resort (just a couple minutes walk along the beach) for dinner like some of the other reviewers had suggested - awesome fresh seafood spread. Only minor gripe was the intermittent wifi access, but after a few days I had gotten used to it and started appreciating the lack of connectivity with the outside world!

We stayed at Palagama for one night and what i would comment on most is the peacefull and serendib setting at the hotel. Calming and relaxing with the constant breeze which helps to keep cool amidst the heat of the day. Food was excellent! Specially the Beef Burger which i believe is the best ive ever had. Good Job guys, keep it up!

Room Tip: Choose the beach kabana's !

I was with my wife in Palagama Beach Resort in Kalpitya Sri Lanka for urforgettable two weeks.
In particular, we are attracted by the closeness to nature, tranquility and unhurried.
Since we are already both at retirement age and heaviest time of night program is over, so we enjoyed everything.
The food was excellent, sain with one word .
The staff was initially confusing polite for Scandinavians , but when used to it we found it came directly from hearts not from money. The weather favored us and the swimming pool was a MUST.
In particular, I need to mention was safety and sense of security, we all experienced in the course of any kind of threat or sense of threat.
If and when ever we ever come back to Sri Lanka, choice is again Palagama Beach Resort in Kalpitiya.

Room Tip: If you want to be alone, this is the place!

Our beach cabana was really nice, huge & comfortable with lovely bright furnishings. The pool area was great with lots of comfy cushions to lounge & read books.

The restaurant was more expensive than other hotels we stayed at but the food was really tasty and good quality. The breakfast buffet was huge with a good mix of Sri Lankan and western dishes.

The staff were friendly but we felt this hotel lacked the character and personal touch of other places we stayed.

We ended up using other hotels to help book excursions as Palagama didn't really offer what we required. The lovely friendly staff at Udekki organised a trip to Anuradaphura for us (Palagama staff said it would take 4hrs to get there so didn't really sell it to us but after speaking to Udekki we found out it would actually take less than 2hrs!)

Bar reef resort organised a day of kite surfing about 45mins tuk tuk away, the staff there were really friendly too.

You can use all facilities of the other nearby resorts, I actually preferred Bar Reef Resorts pool area, much prettier.

We also had an amazing meal at Udekki one night, ridiculous amounts of fantastic fresh food including lobster, tuna, chicken, clams, sashimi, you do not order from a menu instead paying a set price and the food just kept on coming! It was amazing, definitely recommended!!

The beach isn't great but we didn't come here for that so it wasn't an issue, the amazing pools in all 3 resorts more than make up for this.

I spent the whole month in Sri Lanka in different places working and can say that I really loved staying in Palagama beach. About two weeks we stayed in Palagama beach with my three children and enjoyed very much. Staff were so friendly and caring the whole time also towards my children! Staff takes a good care of the environment and the area is very comfortable: it´s peaceful and beautiful. Food was delicious and buffee suprised almost every time. I also find it extremely important that the hotel is eco-friendly and has very taken very important steps towards responsible eco-tourism espcially on area like Kalpitiya.

We just spent a weekend in palagama in september and very much enjoyed our stay.
Lovely beach cabanas with outdoors showers, great Srilankan food and such warm hospitality. We found the staff to be very helpful. Yes, there is no butler service in Palagama, but it really is more of a home away from home. Ah! after reading all the comments about the beach, I wanted to see the state for myself but surprisingly found it to be very clean. I guess it's the high winds that b bring in the debris during the kite surfing season but management told us that there are closly monitoring the rubble and that this wasn't a problem during the majority if the year.
This really is a small resort, hidden in the shores on the Kalpitiya sea and really an ideal place for a relaxing beach holiday, which was that were looking for.
Highlight for us were the local curried, the waiters, infinity pool and mini their liitle dog (we loved her)
I would recommend Palalgama to guests travelling to the cultural triangle, as Anuradhapura was only a few hours away.
