“A Hidden Gem....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 August 2014

Fabulous! What a hidden gem….we unfortunately only had one night at this beautiful resort but the manager Dean made sure our stay was superb. The accommodation is quirky, spacious, cool, and great value…the rest of the resort is spectacular, from the Pool, to the several lounge areas dotted about...and some great touches like the palm tree shower and numerous swinging chairs dotted around. Ideal for relaxing, reading, sunbathing and generally forgetting about the rest of the world!

The food was fantastic; having overindulged in Sri Lankan cuisine prior to our stay, it was a welcome change to have some homemade gnocchi (prepared by Dean’s mother!)…and the seafood really is a must! The team did their absolute best to cater to our every request, and always with a big smile.

Highly recommended.

What a great laugh we had sharing stories over a glass (or bottle?!) of Arrack... Dean – hope to see you in Singapore soon!

This review pertains to my stay at the end of June. I finally found this place and arrived late to a fantastic welcome, they even found beer and sandwiches. The manager was terrific and the rooms and the resort itself a work of creative genius. The rooms are tents but whoever saw tents like these? Complete with air conditioning and front porch I have never seen anything like this before. The service matches the accommodation. The breakfast if not outstanding was certainly enormous with a choice of western or 'Sri Lanken' food.

But... This is not a palm fringed lagoon. I acknowledge that I was there in the off season but travelers should realize there is a bulk loader in the near distance to one side and a wind farm generator on the boundary of the other side. The windmill may not be an issue when the monsoon winds are not blowing but certainly causes a noise above the ocean when it is. Also, a careful caution about receiving travel directions. I was advised on an express bus which I carefully identified to make sure there was no miscommunication and planned my return to Colombo accordingly. When I arrived at the bus stop I was variously told the bus did not run on that particular day, had had an accident or was broken down. The owner of the Dolphin Beach Resort kindly spoke to me on the phone in response to my insistence that the bus I was directed to was a local non-express bus. I did not wish to catch a local bus, no other alternative such as a driver was offered. I had a deadline to be in Colombo by 4 pm which I carefully explained. I had spoken to this gentleman the day before on calling the resort so I was fairly certain of whom I was speaking to. Guess what? It was a local bus. I am used to local buses however, this did not serve my needs on this occasion. I did not find this travel misguidance at all helpful.

I would have given four stars apart from this travel problem and five stars except having stayed at some of the most beautiful beaches in the world I regret not to add this beach to this list.

Dear Katherine,

It was a pleasure meeting you and your son. Thank you so much for your review complimenting our standards of food, rooms, service and 'creative genius' in terms of design, I will certainly pass this compliment on to our architect Christine Wallbeoff. I am so sorry to hear that your return journey by bus did not go as well as you or we would have liked. We were guided by a public transport schedule but unfortunately as it turned out, the bus had broken down, alternatively though you could have taken an express bus which comes in from the north to Colombo almost every half an hour. There must have been some miscommunication between you and the transport officials at the Puttalam bus stand. So sorry this did not work out well for you, but unfortunately we cannot take responsibility for the bus breaking down or public transport schedules. We certainly did our best to guide you and even advised you to leave earlier than you did. We do hope you will visit us again during the season and experience 'Alankuda Beach' famous for its clean and unspoilt beaches. We are also well known for the hundreds if not thousands of dolphins you could see during the season, whales and the best snorkeling coral reef in Sri Lanka 'Bar Reef'. We look forward to the day you will possibly visit us again during the season and we could share these wonderful experiences with you.
Best regards from sunny Sri Lanka

My first visit to this fabulous boutique hotel. Love the concept of luxurious air conditioned designer tents by the beach. Every minute detail has been perfected. The pool is a stones throw away from the ocean and the pool deck is loaded with colorful cushions & very comfortable sofa beds & chairs. The staff always have a broad smile and are extremely courteous and attentive. The GM Dean is the perfect example of a dynamic personality. Amazing guy constantly on the move whilst talking and pampering the guests. The menu includes typical Sri Lankan cuisine & a host internationally famous starters & mains. Seafood is the speciality and cooked to "melt in the mouth" perfection. The desserts include home made brownies & ice cream, banana infused chocolate roll & creamy cream caramel to name a few. Dolphin & whale watching are the main attractions during the season November to April. I would be back sooner than later to this fabulous boutique hotel.

We had a really nice 4 nights stay at the resort. We enjoyed the pool, the great fresh food and the warm service.

Our 5 year old girl might have finished all the available watermelon though...

We didnt leave the resort, yes well a nice stroll on the beach, but that was all for us.

Great place! Luxury tents on the beach under the palmtrees. Very tastefully decorated. Great pool and great food. Sri Lankan kitchen or pizza's out of the wood-oven. Fish straight out of the sea.
On top of that Dean as the perfect host. Definitely advisable. We came there after visiting the culturele triangle. The perfect place to relax couple of days. Thank you Dean and staff, hope to see you again.

If there is a paradise on earth, this place comes pretty close.
The lay-out of the tents gives all visitors enough privacy, the pool and plenty of hang-outs are just lovely and the kindness of Dean and all other staff makes you forget about home, work or anything else in the world.
Don't let the word tent scare you...they are perfect and the sound of the wind...makes you sleep like never before.
Am sure we will think back and envy Dean on a rainy, cloudy day in Amsterdam...but with a huge smile!
Thanks again Dean and say hi to the nice guys working with you!

We stayed at this wonderful resort, situated directly at a beautiful beach. The place is managed by Dean and his mission is to make your stay a perfect as possible.
He even installed a TV in a nice room (it is probably still orange...) so that we were able to watch the World Cup match between The Netherlands and Costa Rica. Of course he did not forget to supply a refrigerator with cold beer and other drinks!
Every tent is extremely comfortable with good beds, airconditioning, wifi and a nice bathroom.
Also the pool is very nice and there are more than enough beds, so that you can relax.
The food is good and the service is excellent.
We enjoyed our wonderful stay and hope to visit again.
