I went to Kalpitiya to learn kite surfing. Early December is pre-season so wind conditions we not optimal all the time, but there were enough days with wind and I had the lagoon for myself. Ruuk Village has a nice concept, a great team and good food. 10 days went by so fast!

Hi all,

Me and my girlfriend booked our holiday only two weeks before departure. We found the Ruuk Village online and actually booked on the way to the airport. Everything worked perfect, even the airport pick up, which I was skeptical about, since my down payment was very late.

To make things short:

Accommodation: the cabana was clean and big enough for the two of us. We got left alone by mosquitoes due to the net provided.

Food: I’m in love with Asian food. So this place is perfect for that. The kitchen team produces fresh, local food every day. One thing we would not do if in power of the kitchen: try to “copy western” food, since local food is all we need! But that is just us. Pizza out of the oven was still awesome.

Ruuk Village
Staff is always working to improve the village. We like the whole set up and the idea. I actually enjoyed to think a little about when to charge the phone, even power was available when ever needed.
The staff is helpful and always smiling.

Kitesurfing
We came here in order for my girlfriend to learn how to kite. The kite staff achieved that. For myself, there was enough wind every day to kitesurf with a 13sq kite.

In general I like the idea of providing accommodation which is, to local standards, eco friendly.
Are there things that could be made more ecological ... sure. Could I complain about that after flying 13hr for a stupid Holliday ... definitely not. Would I come back ... definitely yes, but different season to be preferred.

I am sure I forgot something, but you should come here and experience it yourself.

Have a good time.

We recently spent the last couple of days of our Sri Lanka trip at Ruuk Village. Despite the rain we still had an enjoyable stay with staff eager to please and ensure their guests are comfortable and happy. We booked the Camper which was awesome (best for 1 person only or 2 not-too-big people!) but were offered a free upgrade to the cabana as there were more than normal mosquitos with the rain which were a little easier to manage inside a bigger cabana. Please do not come here if you are looking for 5 star luxury. Ruuk Village offers basic, rustic accommodation for a true ‘off-the-grid’ feel, with a generator running power from around 6-10pm and solar power running phone chargers in the common area during the day. Book a villa if you want your own bathroom, but we were happy to use the shared facilities outside our room. It is a tranquil, peaceful place right by the lagoon. Boat trips are also available from the village to get to the beach, fishing, kite surfing, dolphin watching and other activities. Food is prepared and served with a smile from the sweet ‘Aunty’, who can cook up both Sri Lankan and European delights! Kalpitiya village is around a 20 minute walk or short tuktuk ride away. The common areas are cosy, comfortable and accommodating and we enjoyed sharing a drink there with some of the other guests. The friendly, homely, feel, along with the staffs desire to satisfy and look after their guests within limited means is what makes Ruuk Village a little gem in Kalpitiya.

The Ruuk Village was our last stop during our two week journey in the low season (End of October / beginning of November).

We have decided for Ruuk Village because of the proximity to the kite spot and due to the concept of Ruuk Village "Keep it simple".

Due to low season we have been nearly alone in the village and at the lagoon. Other kite hotels were closed, but the great team of Ruuk village were happy to provide a nice and friendly stay for us.

The Ruuk village is located directly at the beach, one or two kilometers from Kalpitiya city. The tuktuk were not able to drop us out directly at the Ruuk Village, so we had to walk some meters at the beach to get to the village, which was a funny experience for us.

Just arrived in the Village, Gamma (local manager = first contact person for all guests) has welcomed us very warm. Gamma, a funny and openminded guy, has entertained us at the community area every time. Furthermore, we had great conversations, about Sri Lanka and the culture with him. He took care on all our requests.

At Ruck Village are smaller cabanas with own Shower and common toilet house, bigger cabanas with own shower and own toilet and the palm leaf roofed VW bus to sleep in.
Our cabana was a small cabana concentrated on the essential things. It was clean, nice located and had a own shower behind the cabana under a palm. All cabanas were build in traditional way with a palm leaf roof. This creates a very authentic atmosphere. At the front there is a terrass with the possibility to hang on an own hammog.

The complete area of the Ruuk were groomed and the whole team around Gamma was permanently eager to keep it clean. They also planted new plants, flowers, herbs and fruits. The many palms also offered coconuts which were used for the meals. The kitchen lady Enti has cooked typical Srilankan food with local ingredients. All of them were really delicious.

Due to the fact, that we have been there in low season, we hadn't so much wind, but many times rain. Nevertheless, the kite teacher Ruchira droves us with the boat to the kite spot as soon as we desired. When there are many people in the village, there are fixed times scheduled for the boat transfer.
Even for the rainy days and days without wind, Gamma was happy to offer us other spare time activities: Dolphine tour, national park, trips to lonely islands, ... We didn't do any of these, because we loved to relax in the Village.

All in all it was a very uncomplicated, relaxed and interesting stay. "Moin" and thanks to Gamma and the whole team for realizing a great stay in Ruuk Village.
We will come back. Definitely!

Room tip: Small cabana is sufficient. Who is interested in own toilet should take big cabana.
