“Beautiful location, nice rooms, food a bit erratic”
Reviewed 20 April 2012

The location is beautiful there are plenty of sun loungers around the pool and on the private beach, the pool is good. Rooms are spacious and adequately furnished, you need to leave your key st reception to have the room cleaned but if you do so then it's great. Staff are helpful and friendly especially if you tip regularly. The food could have been better but it's difficult to please everyone and we could usually find something on the buffet that was ok. There. A couple of bars drown the beach which sve good sea food. We weren't too keen on being fenced in but if it hadn't been we would have been hassled by hawkers. We would visit again

Rude reception, failed to provide child bed as requested. Was a good standard room (super deluxe?) in new wing, with nice view which was the highlight of the stay at this hotel.
Advertised room safe didn't work, dirty floor in room and poor lock on patio door.

Average service in restaurant reflected poor reception and management of this hotel. Food quality was poor, little choice on buffet for breakfast and dinner, so poor I didn't want to go for seconds!

Suggest visit to wonderful beach, but not this hotel.

Reviewed 15 April 2012

We've just returned from 10 days at PBC and were a little worried before going because of all the negative reviews here on TA. We travelled with our 14, 12 and 5 year old children and had a 2 storey chalet with half board.
Yes, the receptionist is a grumpy bugger but there's another guy in there who is very helpful. I made a point of saying hello to every member of staff I met and had no problems with service other than a few slow drinks at dinner. The dining room and housekeeping staff where very helpful and our room was made up immaculately every day.
The compulsory half-board was fine - the breakfast and evening buffets were great if a little dis-organised in terms of queuing, especially at the "live" station. It would have been better if they started a little earlier in the evenings especially for the younger kids as well as having a few more child friendly options.
The hotel is in the best position on the beach and we all had a great time playing in the waves which can be a little rough but if you use the common sense we were all born with then they are not a problem. A few rips did build up but the hotel life guards were quick off the mark to set up their red flags and to jump in to pull people out when they were in trouble.
The hotel management need to be commended for the calm and efficient way that they evacuated the hotel during the tsunami alert. The beach was cleared very quickly and we were taken to their sister hotel on the headland by car, van and tuc-tuc. We spent 3 hours getting TV and internet updates before getting the all clear and returning to the hotel.
One bonus of being right on the beach was watching a turtle dig her nest and lay her eggs one evening - a magical experience for all of us.
The beach restaurants are excellent for lunch or dinner if you're bored of the buffet. All can serve excellent lunches with great seafood but be prepared for laid-back service - if the joints are out and the surf is good you may wait a while but that's the joy of being on holiday!
Grab a tuc-tuc to Welligama and take lunch at the seafood restaurant on the beach - it's built on two traditional fishing boats and if you get the tables at the bow you are right over the water - superb.
We would definitely go back to PBC. We had a great holiday and were all sad to leave.

The rooms are very clean and spacious, with a balcony with sea view! Service is good and the only problem is that you must have half board and food is below average

Reviewed 10 April 2012

Stayed here at the start of April 2012 for 2x nights ($90 per night, including enforced half-board).

Not sure I can add much to the numerous other negative reviews of this place really, except to agree with them all that it was the most disappointing place that we stayed at during our 3-week trip around Sri Lanka - a trip that saw us stay in rooms varying from $10 per night to $450 per night.

Having had a week to reflect on my stay, hopefully I can now write a review which is balanced and unemotive - had I written it during my stay, that wouldn't have been the case:

POSITIVES:
> An incredible setting, right in the middle of one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka.
> Bedrooms, communal areas, and grounds are pretty okay, and kept in quite good condition.
> The food (despite being enforced half-board), was actually quite good - breakfasts in particular (excellent egg chef).

NEGATIVES:
> Quite simply the rudest 'welcome' and 'registration' that i've ever received from a Hotel Receptionist anywhere that i've ever travelled, from a man who is currently competing in this year's 'Rudest-Man-in-Sri-Lanka' competition. Quite extraordinary, and quite why someone with that demeanour would be employed in that position is beyond comprehension, and completely at odds with the welcome that we received everywhere else in Sri Lanka. He's backed-up by the most ineffectual 'Manager' that i've dealt with, who paid lip-service to my comments about the welcome (and various other screw-ups associated with our check-in) but who, in reality, couldn't give a toss.
> Lacklustre staff - The standards of service throughout the hotel are underwhelming, with nearly all of the staff lacking in any pride, sense of service and general 'joie de vivre' that you see throughout hotels / bars / restaurants everywhere else in Sri Lanka - i suspect it's a direct result of the ineffectual manager above.
> Enforced half-board - there's no choice in the matter, with breakfast and dinner wrapped up into the room rate. A shame when there's such great restaurants all along the beach - it obviously doesn't stop you visiting them for dinner (which we did), but obviously it feels like you've been ripped-off slightly.
> It's a 'Tour Group' style hotel, full of families and groups on their scheduled tours around Sri Lanka - that's not really a 'Negative', I know, but it perhaps explains the comments above, and is why this hotel is not really suitable for Independent Travellers.

With a tiny bit of 'tweaking', this could be a great hotel - and all the required improvements are listed ad nauseam within the other travellers' comments on TripAdvisor. But it's quite clear that the management don't read / don't care / don't recognise / don't understand the comments and suggestions, so don't expect any change soon folks.

We stayed at a fabulous place in Tangalle (Mangrove Chalets), but we had to leave to find somewhere with AC/swimming pool as just too hot for both us and our son. In Mirissa, I enquired at Paradise Beach and despite the invasion of the barmy army, they had a family room for us. I think the room was VERY expensive for what it was (around £125 for two nights), and the management were pretty 'offhand' (to put it politely), but we would have accepted anything cool at that stage. To be fair the pool, though busy, was a welcome relief, but the staff were generally slack and the obligatory HB was just a joke in terms of quality / choice. We made sure we had a 'nice' meal at one of the beach restaurants during the day, and then just picked at what we could in the evening. What was left I should say, as we've never been ones to join a buffet scrum.

To be fair, the room was mainly clean and on two levels like a little house (hence the price), but otherwise not so much to recommend this hotel. We were intrigued by the notice in the staff office about putting tips in a box when you leave, rather than tipping individuals, as 'certain' members of the hotel staff were upset about never being tipped. One couldn't help thinking it was the managers who wrote it. So we tipped the people who helped us directly and put something very small in the box.

We enjoyed our stay here, the bay is beautiful, but the hotel seems to be both lazily/greedily run and the compulsory HB belongs to 1980s school skiing holidays..

the paradise hotel in Marissa was heaven on earth.the hotel was spotless kept clean by a friendly team of workers. You only had to ask for assistance and it was on hand pretty quickly.A really good buffet style breakfast i.e food from all styles, and evening meals as well were rotated daily and there was plenty to chose from .There is also a money exchanging system on site that was up to date daily,a free use of computers to all residents,a very well stocked bar and reasonabally priced too,if you needed a different type of lunch there is a menu to chose from to delight all tastes,Now the best part the beach is metres from your front door with free loungers and towels and mattress style lounging mats to lay on .the beach is kept so clean its really a nice and healthy enviroment. We had a room with its own veranda a view over the Indian Ocean to die for,It was quiet and so relaxing and if you wanted a change there are other beach restuarants and cafes to choose from,I reccomend this place to anyone looking for a rest in Paradise,oh yes theres also a pool it's great and safe for kids too plenty of families stayed there when we did.And a full time security patrol on site to makes you feel safe

Room Tip: higher rooms have there own verandas to vew the beach and more queiter then the ground floor
