A friend booked a room for 3 people and when my sister and I arrived, we were told the booking was made for a day earlier. Not having booked it ourselves, we agreed to go for an alternative room, which, however, cost much more. When our friend arrived and tried to reason that her booking was actually for the day we arrived, she was showere by oral abuse from the owner, who was rude, aggresive and frankly out of order.

In the absence of having an alternative accommodation given the imminent New Year, we decided to stay. The service, however, didnt get better. Despite having to move once more when our new room was given to another guest (to which we consented, trying to create a good-will), the staff and the owner continued to behave in a hostile and demeaning way. Repeatedly we were accused of drinking (given that it is how they make money and we were actually not driving on two of the occasions, it was a strange, controlling behaviour) and treated with suspicion, despite being three women travelling together, behaving decently and with respect.

The situation escalated when our room key was stolen. Returning from the beach at New Years at 1am (a very reasonable time given the all-around festivities), we found the guesthouse gate was locked and all staff was drunk and unconscious. One of us had to climb over the fence and wake-up the watchmen. He than proclaimed not to have a spare key and refused to wake up the owner, leaving us outside without anywhere to stay and our things being locked in the room.

When I rang the bell to wake the owner up and ask for a master key, the staff disappered, scared of the owner. The owner eventually woke-up, being abusive and aggressive, refusing to open the room and another staff accused us of drinking. The situation escalated when we repeatedly asked for an alternative solution to the problem and the owner kept shouting at us and refusing to help. Eventually, they were forced to break into the room, when we refused to sleep outside. The owner was clearly out of control and we were frankly scared.

When two of us stayed in the room to sleep and I decided to join another party at the beach, the owner refused to let me out of the guest house, forcing me to find the key to the gate myself and letting myself out.

A highly inappropriate and disturbing behaviour in an establishment with some good reviews. Would caution anyone who is considering to stay here to look for alternative accomodation options.

We arrived here, my friend and me after reading about it. Seemed like the older part of the "staff" didn't really want us there.... We got a ok room, with a dobb separate bed, the fan didn't work so well so the first night we didn't sleep much. Nice veranda though , too bad they were doing a lot of construction work , and some of the workers around were a bit too curious .... The food wasn't much so we always ate elsewhere, take notice, they lock the gates at 21.30 so don't stay out too long, I almost didn't get inn one night at 22! But overall, 2000 rup on the beach isn't too bad so.... And the beach is beautiful ! But there are some other places I'd rather stay next time i come to mirissa.

Room was a decent rate considering you are right on the beach. Hotel also has cheaper rooms inside. The chap running it seemed friendly enough. The room was very clean. Good mosquito net. Only problem was the hot water smelt awful. Awful. So cold showers for the few days we were there but it wasn't a problem. Food seemed to be good value in comparison to other places on the beach. Have stayed a few places in Mirissa but this was the best for value considering it was right on the beach. Bit of a pain having to go back through the front of the hotel when returning after 10pm. Will probably go back.

Lovely bright and cheerful small guesthouse right on the beach. Our 'cabana' was small but clean - perfectly adequate inexpensive accommodation. The bed was good, everything worked, although the on-demand hot water shower had a distinctly sulfurous odour that the cold water did not have. We had cold showers!

Although there were ants in the bathroom when we arrived, we quickly tracked them down to the trash bin. Once that was washed out there was no more ant problem.

The Sri Lankan food was good (rice and curry) and so were the 'grills', which in Sri Lanka seems to mean fried... never did get a clear idea about this. Drinks menu very limited, however, so if we wanted a cocktail that didn't contain arrack we had to go next door. The 'foreign' food was a little odd, but that can only be expected. After all, you order pizza in Sri Lanka for an adventure, not to get authentic pizza. Again, it was good, but odd.

The staff are friendly and were very helpful, although in the background unless you asked for something. I have found service in Sri Lanka to be available but not pushed on you - you must ask. Nothing wrong with that!

I would definitely come back.

Room Tip: The surf is loud but so is the street - if you need quiet to sleep you might choose a room in the ce...

The guesthouse has a nice garden and is located right at the beach with an own restaurant. They also offer whalewatching tours.
Unfortunately, the rooms are quite moldy and dark. The mosquito net was very dirty, so that we decided to use our own.
The bathroom was populated by ants and the water that came out of the shower smelled very badly.
Compared to other places, the room was a bit overpriced. Nevertheless, the location outweighs the disadvantages of the room itself.

I live in kandy andI have been coming to Ocean Moon for quite a number of years now. The owner and staff are really friendly. I would agree that the rooms are basic but being on a beach I do not think you need a great room with all mod cons.
The food and beer is cheap and there are beach bars/restaurants on both sides.
Mirrisa beach is one of the nicest beaches in Sri Lanka and would def recommend staying here at Ocean Moon for a few nights.
Regards
Michael

Yes this place is right on the beach but the "cabana" we stayed in was not great. There was a very strong smell of damp but otherwise clean. On arrival they were putting out fresh fish for dinner. As we were new to the coast we didn't know the going rate and were charged twice what we should have been. Make sure you don't make the same mistake! We paid 4500RS room only - no breakfast, no free wifi, no air-con. Although some might see this as good value for a beach side property after 1 night here we walked just 10mins up the road and found a fantastic place a 2 min walk from a nicer part of the beach with everything included for the same price. I recommend you have a look around at other places with much better value for money.
