We chose Raja and the whales because of reviews and were not disappointed. Price was good ( 6000LKR) and they had a pretty new boat. Sea was really rough but they gave as sea sickness tablets and looked after those who were sick. And of course we saw whales too! 2 different blue whales. The other one many times.
They really had a nice attitude about the whales and said that the happiness of whales comes first in these trips.
Only one minus about the breakfast which wasn't that special in my opinion.
We chose Raja and the whales because of trip advisor reviews, and even then they exceeded my expectations. The personal touches, tea, biscuits, breakfast were great. I will say to guests though, out of 21, only 5 of us were ok, everyone else was sea sick. They did warn us the sea was a bit rough.
I loved the ethical and caring way they approach the whales, not chasing them like some other idiot companies we saw. All the time sharing their vast knowledge of whales. We didn't see many but the determination of the crew resulted in an up close and personal experience with a Blue whale, which the crew had stated was their last attempt to find whales that day. It was wonderful. Thanks Raja and the whales.
Most importantly for us Raja and the Whales seemed to genuinley care about the conservation of marine life, in partcular the blue whale. They follow international guidelines to approach the whales which means they are not disturbed, they do not chase them or get too close (contrary to what other boats in the vacinity seemed to be doing!) They gave us lots of information about their effort to aid scientists and to have the shipping lane moved the save the whales. They do not use sonar, instead relying on their own knowledge to find the whales.
In addition to having lots of knowledge, the service by all memebrs of the staff and crew was fantastic. They made every effort to make the trip enjoyable - despite a rough sea. We were given sea sickness tablets, lots of delicious food and drink and they even shared their photos (taken with a much better camera than ours) of the whales we saw with us afterwards.
We had a good number of whale sightings, some from a distance but some quite near just due to sheer luck. They were keen to not crowd whales or follow other boats and on many instances hung back - which meant we were not as near to the whale but were therfore not harassing the whale or chasing it into the shipping lane.
Would highly reccomend!
This was a great experience for me and my friend!
The crew was friendly and super professional.
However, if you know you tend to get motion sickness take that in account! I was sea sick during the entire time (definitely saw it coming) so I was ready. Got lucky to have all the whales showing up on the side I was sitting at.
although I was sick the entire time the crew kept checking in on me making sure I'm alright and of course- seeing the whales.
Over all, if you're not sick- this is a great experience. Do go with Raja and the Whales!
This tour is a must if you are visiting Sri Lanka. The tour starts early in the morning and they take you inside the sea. After about an hour, you will start seeing either the whale or the dolphins. We first saw the whale. However we were far hence we could only spot the tail and then we saw a whole lot of dolphins swimming right next to our boat. You can not forget this experience.
We went in august upon reccomendation by our guesthouse as being a company that adhered to international law and regulation with regard to whale watching. There were numerous warnings about rough waters and there being a high liklihood of sea sickness. We went regardless and consequently got terrible sea sickness from the rough waters. The guides on the boat were lovely and looked after everyone very well. People who were able to eat had a delicious breakfast. Once we got to where the whales were the waters had calmed and we had some great views of the whales, there were also dolphins on the return journey. We didn't have a camera with us but one of the guides kindly took pictures for us and emailed them to us the same day.
