Hotel Silan Mo

My daughter and I stayed at the Silan Mo Hotel for 3 nights whilst travelling around Sri Lanka. The hotel is built into a hillside, overlooking the beautiful beach. The rooms are boutique style and are very clean and comfortable, spacious, well furnished with polished concrete floors. There was an equally impressive large terrace and a rooftop swimming pool. The hotel was just across the road from the beach and close to restaurants and shops. Mirissa is a little piece of paradise and how we imagined Sri Lanka probably used to be a few years ago.

The only thing the hotel lacked was some communal space where guests could mingle. The rooftop pool area would be an ideal space to create a bar and sitting area as it commanded wonderful views.

We would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone staying in Mirissa. It is reasonably priced, spotlessly clean, very close to beach and restaurants and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: There is no lift and a lot of steps so if not so fit, try and book a room on one of the lower floors...

This is a fairly new hotel, I think - the rooftop pool wasn't operational yet. We paid $80 US for half-board (in Mirissa, you can't seem to escape half-board, all the hotels offer it).

The rooms were very big but strangely designed – for example, the terraces are way too big (they are in the blazing sun all day) and offer no privacy – there are three rooms in a row on each level and if you take a few steps into the terrace, you can see into the other rooms' terraces. The chairs on the terrace were wooden and very uncomfortable!

The bathrooms were big but the actual shower cubicle tiny and without a shelf to put shampoo bottles on etc. There was a hairdryer, which I think unnecessary, and the TV didn't work. Wi-fi was only on the balcony and restaurant but didn't work the majority of the time, which is not necessarily their fault.

The buffet dinner had very good salads. Breakfast was good – fresh fruit, an omelette station etc and sometimes monkeys play in nearby trees. Staff were very friendly and hard working.

Overall, a well-run, good hotel, but design-wise it wasn't great. We were on the first floor but I can imagine it's knackering to walk all the way up if you're on the upper floors.

Room Tip: Ask for the first floor to avoid a big climb!

We came across this hotel through another hotel which was fully booked, and this was a very lucky solution. Nice and tidy rooms. The staff is very helpful , both at the front desk and in the restaurant.. The only problem with this hotel is the fact that there are 5 floors and no elevator, so you have to be a bit athletic to run up and down the stairs...... You have also to cross the main road to get access to the beach and traffic can be heavy from time to time.

We moved into this hotel after staying three nights at the secret guesthouse (they were booked out so we had to find a new place in Mirissa) and were totally surprised about the good value for little money....we were travelling with a two year old boy and booked a double room (I think there are only double rooms) for 80 USD in high season (January is probably the most expensive month to look for accomm in Mirissa...).

The hotel is new. The room was very clean. Great big terracce with great views of the ocean. Good food. The shower cabin of our bathroom was already a bit run down but other than that I can totally recommend that place.

There is a pool on the roof top. However it was hardly in usage hence no proper service and shade umbrellas etc.

The food was good but not perfect. However the staff was very helpful and heartly.

If to be honest i didn't stay at this hotel. I cam across the hotel when I was looking around the area of Mirissa for a better hotel than where we stayed. I went to look around and saw the place, and this it was I cam up with:
- the hotel was opened only a year and a half ago.
- You need to cross the hectic road in order to get to the beach.
- The hotel has about 4 floors (no elevator), so if you have kids or physical problems, it will be an issue for you to get to the room.
- The rooms are very big, everything is new, and the terrace with ocean view is huge.
- There is not garden outside to sunbath or chill.
- Free internet for the hotel guest
- The price of a half board room was only 80$ for a couple, and it is a bargain, compare to the other dumps around. You should jump on the opportunity before they will raise the prices.

I stayed at this establishment December 2011 and it was well worth it. The hotel looks oriental in style with staggered roofing on each floor and over the staircase (see picture). There is a beautiful pool on the rooftop and undisturbed views of the ocean. The room we stayed was modern and clean, not super luxurious or anything. It was located on the fourth level (the first three floors are dedicated to the reception, dining area, and kitchen), so if you do not like climbing stairs, then you may not like this place. I enjoy the extra bit of exercise, so i did not mind this. There is no elevator as of yet.

Breakfast and Dinner are included with the reservation. There is no menu so you are at their food discretion, but the food was great so there were no problems there.

Beach is right across the street and it's just a walk from a chain or restaurants and bars on Mirissa beach.

Room Tip: The higher up you go the better your views, however you will have to climb those stairs. If you'...

A very pleasant hotel, especially if you get a room on the last floors : the large terrasses with armchairs and table (available in all he rooms) command an absolutely superb view upon the Indian Ocean. The rooms themselves are spacious, clean and very comfortable, even if — as always in Ceylon — you need patience to get hot water in the shower. Very pleasant restaurant also with quite good Indian food and rich beakfasts, and the people are helpful.
Only problem : this hotel has no lift. So, it's forbidden to invalid guests. For the luggage, never mind, there is a lot of porteurs.
