We have stayed in many hotels / heritage homes / resorts, in various places including Dubai, Malaysia, Maldives, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Shimla, Ooty, Kodai, Munnar, etc. But we had never experienced a peace, warmth, security & satisfaction, which Visalam provides.

This was our 3rd visit to Visalam (within a year)

No words are enough to explain the hospitality & sincerity of each & every one at Visalam. . . . Jiji, Ramu (RC), Lijo, George, Pandiyamma (left), Sindhu, Beulah, etc. We feel that it’s our second home.

Their traditional welcome drink (Nannari juice) is special & superb. Jiji & RC’s warm welcome made us so happy & energized; we forgot the tiredness of long drive. George’s food is delicious! Lijo has a special way of serving food, with his witty dialogues.

Enjoying the candle light dinner at the first floor open restaurant is unforgettable. We could see a long view of trains passes through karaikudi. . . It’s a unique experience.

We bathe in the extra big and special bath rooms, slept peacefully in spacious, clean, neat, cool bedroom. . . it was awesome.

Jiji & RC are doing wonders at Visalam!!! Congrats friends!!! Congrats CGH!!! We will meet again.

I was quite excited about the one night stay at Visalam, Kanadukathan and i have to say the ambience, the staff, the food - everything lived up to my expectation. The staff took every effort to make us feel comfortable. The room was very spacious with another exit to the courtyard and the swimming pool was also maintained very well. The food (dinner and breakfast) were also wonderful, i still cannot forget the taste of the beetroot starter that was served during dinner that night. My parents and i were just amazed with the property that we decided to stay in instead of going sight seeing. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the place (especially at night). The send off was also a memorable one where the staff stood by our vehicle to say goodbye. Do go to this property if you want to have a feel of a Chettiar Mansion.. you would not regret at all!

We were a large family group spanning three generations that holidayed in this fabulous property in July 2013.
Visalam is outstanding in every way. The staff are lovely and welcoming. The place is spotlessly clean. The decor is understated and elegant. The food is to die for( I loved the rooster and his ladies that came around to check on our breakfast served outdoors, but of course guests are requested to not feed them).
The Guest Relations manager, Ramu, took us to visit local craft making units like the Athangudi tiles, the handloom weavers unit where we indulged in some sari shopping, a Tamilian snack making unit where we loaded up on delicious murkus and other goodies, a plastic basket weaving unit where we bought colourful baskets. We also visited other Chettiar mansions in the area.
When Ramu was unavailable, the manager, Jeje, stepped in to take us to see the temple of the 1000 terracotta horses.
The chef explained what he had cooked for us and shared his recipies readily. Even when we sat around chatting late into the night, long after dinner was all cleared away, when we finally got up to go to bed, someone would appear to wish us good night!
Can I think of any one thing negative about the place? No!
However, do remember this might not be a place to consider if you are looking for an active nightlife and theme parks. This is a wonderful dip into Chettiar culture.

Over a decade I have stayed in every cgh hotel many times (except Bangaram Island), but Visalam has a special spirit and ambience and place in my heart, that feels more like staying in a grand home. The Chettiar architecture is extremely ambient, the housekeeping is spotless, the food is regional and the staff so genuinely proud, eager to please and their service effortless. By far the hotel of choice if visiting this fascinating region. JeJe the current manager runs a dream team and I would move in for a month if I could.

On arrival we were welcomed with cold towels and a cold drink, which was very welcome after our long, hot journey via two temples. We were given a tour of the beautifully restored mansion, including the tragic history of the previous owner. Many of the original photographs and furnishings are still on display. The bedrooms are huge and spotlessly clean. There is also a large swimming pool with a jacuzzi, sun-loungers and separate changing rooms, as well as a poolside cafe, serving snacks during the day. Breakfast is served on the patio area in the garden, and dinner is served on the first floor, outside terrace, with a view of trains going by in the distance. The food served is Chettinad style and tasty from either a set menu, or à la carte, which changes daily. You can look round the kitchens any time, and there is an opportunity to attend a cooking class.

The town is a fascinating place full of mansions, some of which are in perfect condition, and others very run down. You can visit some of these and the interiors are beautiful, full of carved teak and lovely tiles. There is also a weaving workshop which has made and sold amazing fabrics for generations, but which you would not find in any tourist shop, and are very reasonably priced.

While we were there, a festival was taking place in the temple in the next village, which we were invited to by the staff. This was a fascinating insight into local Hindu customs.

All in all, we would highly recommend this lovely hotel, and we can't find any fault with it at all!
