“Too large for solo traveller”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2014

Most reviews are from people attending weddings and also the venue is popular for company seminars/conferences. It has a lot of rooms ( some a bit of a trek from Reception) and some huge open spaces. The location is pleasant and is close to DH Lawrence's birthplace and museum . The rooms are standard 'business 3 star' but quite dated. Old furniture, old TV with only a few channels etc. Nice leisure centre/swimming pool.
As a sole business traveller, I felt a bit isolated in the huge bar area and the restaurant was full of families ( wedding next day I think ) and groups of people attending seminars. No real ale in bar and very poor sandwich provided as bar snack. Slighty stale white bread with sliced chicken like you buy in the supermarket. Cost of a large glass of wine £8 !
. Buffet breakfast was fine and lots of choice on top of the usual cooked stuff.
Main good point was that the B&B price ( paid in advance) was reasonable for a hotel like this ( with leisure centre etc )

Dear Albermarle,

Thank you for your recent review. I am pleased that you enjoyed breakfast nad the leisure facilities. I am sorry that the lounge menu sandwich was not to expectation and will communicate this to the kitchen team. We do sell real ale by the bottle, but not on draught, it is a good point as it has once again become increasingly popular in recent times, so we will review this going forward.
Kind Regards

Booked through groupon for one night ,could not fault anything only the drinks a little expensive but suppose thats the case in most hotels. We arrived early and our room was ready ,nice and spacious couldnt fault it .The food was nice and the breakfast had plenty of choice. The staff were very helpful and nothing was to much trouble ,would definatly stay her again.

We booked our stay at Eastwood Hall through Groupon, which included 2 nights B&B in a standard double room, 2 course meal on the first night and £20 in drinks vouchers. I then read reviews on trip advisor and wondered if I had made a mistake, so was a little apprehensive prior to check in.

We arrived at the hotel at 1.30 after a long drive from Lancashire, having sat through many traffic jams. Check in was 2pm however we were greeted by a lovely chap on reception (who was originally from Lancashire too) and were able to check in early. I enquired about any weddings or events during our stay as advised by other reviewers and mentioned my apprehension having read mixed reports on trip advisor. We were promptly upgraded to a superior room! Get in!

Upon finding our room, 209 (only a short walk from reception) we were pleasantly surprised. A lovely room with beautiful views of the grounds and modern facilities, slight marks to grouting around bath but nothing off putting. We were more than happy. We found the room rather hot during the first evening so requested a fan which was brought to our room promptly after our second request, delay perhaps due to a change over in reception staff. I also requested a shower cap ... (its absence was a big deal for other reviewers) and guess what, I got one!

As mentioned in previous reviews the drinks in the Tempus bar were expensive- approximately £10 for a round of 2 drinks, didn't stop us ordering a few more rounds though, we were on holiday in a nice hotel after all!!! We also had our drinks vouchers and used these during the meal.

The food generally received good feedback from other reviewers. Id say it is hit and miss. It does some things very well and others not so.

Breakfast-
Great both mornings- buffet style, plentiful and good quality ingredients. Items were labelled (so that feedback from previous reviews has been acted upon). Super waiting on staff, although I did see one blonde waitress use left over milk from one jug to top up the jug of another guest! Errr.

Evening meal-
Me- Mussels in leek and bacon sauce (poor, overcooked) Moroccan Lamb Tagine (Amazing)
Partner- Pate (good but not as good as our fave pub in Croston) Vegetarian strudel (again good but not a wow, considering menu prices)
Waiting on staff- excellent, particularly Damien (we gave him and reception guy an award)

Location-
Pros
Hotel is ideally situated for couples wanting a relaxing break, we visited Sherwood Forest on our main day there. Also close by is Nottingham for shopping, we didn't bother. Local town Brinsley is nice. Plenty of lovely local walks.

Cons
Eastwood itself is a dive. Take my advice do not go for a drink in any of Eastwood's pubs. It does have a really good chippy and takeaway pizza place though and a large Morrisons.

Facilities
There were various other events during our stay but this didn't interfere with our stay in the slightest. The gym is well stocked with treadmills, cross trainers, step machines and various weight equipment. We had an early morning gym session before our great breakfast indulgence! Also a exercise studio, sauna, steam room and pool but we didn't use these so cant comment.

Overall this is a great hotel, with a few tweaks to the customer service skills of two members of staff (second receptionist and waitress) and to the food in the Tempus restaurant (needs to be consistently great to warrant the prices) it could be excellent.

I believe this is a fair and honest review of a hotel and have learnt a few things from the experience, trip advisor is a good guide and I'm glad I read the reviews but if I hadn't booked before reading them I wouldn't have had such a enjoyable Easter weekend. Take reviews with a pinch of salt!

Room Tip: Turn up slightly early for check in to get the pick of the rooms available (officially 2pm). Check...

Nice hotel in a quiet location amazing views. Food was average. Only bad point was the cutlery was unclean on several occasions. Lipstick stains on wine glass, dirty spoon and knife. Service was a bit slow in restaurant. Friendly staff and leisure facilities were good. Quiet hotel no noise from rooms or corridors.

Just had a weekend break and came away from this with mixed thoughts. Arrived OK and found our room towards the back of the hotel. We had asked for a quiet room and we were happy with this. Room was ok if a little tired and TV could have done with an upgrade - channel reception poor? Bathroom quite nice - bath chipped and some black marks around seal (typical of this sort of room). Wardrobe door hinge loose.

We were keen to use the leisure facilities and had a very nice time on the Friday afternoon. Sauna, steam room and jacuzzi nice. Not many relaxing beds around pool but then again there is not a lot of room.

We had a meal deal on the evening but in retrospect I would have been very disappointed with value for money if I had been paying full price. £6 for a mussel starter was unacceptable considering the mussels were very small and the broth watery/bland. Wine list quite expensive. We also felt that we were rushed towards the end of the evening as I believe the restaurant was "wanting to close" - off-putting and not a very good customer experience.

I would recommend exploring alternative restaurants (e.g. White Lion) in Brinsley nearby.

The grounds and surrounding area (Brinsley) are very attractive and after a lengthy walk we decided to try the leisure pool again on the Saturday afternoon. What a huge disappointment! We were well aware that there was a childrens swimming session on a Saturday afternoon but we did not expect HOW busy it would be or HOW impossible it would be to relax!

We abandonded the pool and went back to our rooms. Surely this could be managed a lot better? Why do there have to be childrens swimming sessions at times that are extremely likely to conflict with residents who have travelled to the hotel for a relaxing weekend? Can the childrens sessions be moved to mid week? I also understand residents were disappointed that there was also a childrens swimming session on the Sunday (9-11) however, I understand the pool area had had to be closed.

A positive to the stay was breakfast. Excellent choice and very good quality. Our greeter was a lady called Susan - she was very friendly and had a wonderful personality.

In summary our visit was ok but a little disappointing as outlined above. With some greater customer service and thought for residents, attention to details and a review of the restaurant evening offering (value for money) we might consider a return.

Room Tip: The site is quite large and we had asked for a high and quiet room prior to arrival. It can be quite...

Dear Turbo Trev,
Thank you for your recent review. I am sorry that you had mixed thoughts on your stay. I am reviewing weekend pool use as this has been mentioned by other guests, both families with children and adults who are effected by childrens times, we will look to find a solution for all to enjoy our pool and leisure facilities.

Monday breakfast was ok, no hot buffet. Breakfast had to be ordered, and we had about a 15 minute wait. When it came, it was of good quality and nice and hot. The staff on duty were very nice and friendly.
This morning 15/4, was so different. We were shown to a table, asked what drink we would like and that was it. We presumed the hot food must be out, it was. Breakfast was not of the same standard as the day before, bacon so hard i was unable to cut it and the fried eggs were way past their best. At 9 on the dot the door was closed and the clatter of clearing tables started, the restaurant was still quite busy, there goes our relaxing breakfast. But the worst thing was they were clearing tables before people had left, this happened to at least 3 people who had gone to get more juice/toast and when they got back to their table everything had been cleared away.
