Jacky's Guesthouse

We stayed for 6 wonderful days at Jacky's. Jacky and his parents go out of their way to make their guests feel welcome. The guesthouse is kept spotlessly clean. The simple no frill rooms have comfortable beds with crispy clean sheets. The breakfast which is included is mostly Chinese (noodle soup). We requested toast and fried eggs which they served us with a smile on the patio overlooking the terraces. But keep in mind that a bakery is 28km a 1 hour ride away which is combined with other errands and thus not always available. The food Jacky's parents cook up is tasty and fresh. There is no printed menu. They give you a choice of what is available. They were happy to make dietary adjustments when we requested for food with little or no oil. (Chinese stir-fry dishes are often drenched in half an inch or more oil!) There is no TV, internet or wifi which was a pleasant change. This is a comfortable serene place surrounded by amazing beauty of the terraces and colorful authentic ethnic culture.

My husband and I have been traveling for 2+ years and our experience at Jacky's was one of the most positive in China.

Room Tip: Jacky has to drive to the big town to access his email so it is best to call him on his cell phone f...

I just spent a week at Jacky's guesthouse and was very pleased with the service there. Nothing seems too much trouble for Jacky or his parents, and our English speaking host was a mine of useful information relating to where to go etc. The view over rice terraces from the guesthouse is awesome, and there's lots of Hani ethnic minority moving around the place all day to make things colourful.
English speaking Chinese are a rarity in Duoyushi, so information relating to travel is to say the least very difficult. If you are a trekker, photographer or just passing through. Go to Jacky's, it really is a nice experience.

I just returned from a two week trip around Yunnan Province. I stayed in many guesthouses, inns, and hostels. Of all the places I stayed Jacky's Guesthouse was by far the best. Like the other posts, I stumbled upon Jacky's place on accident on my way to Sunny's Guesthouse (It's good I never got there because Jacky's is fantastic and I later heard a couple of bad stories about Sunny's). I walked in and was surprised to hear "Hello, how can I help you?" Jacky speaks fantastic English, is knowledgeable about the area, and is full of ideas for exciting trekking routes. His parents are splendid also. My travelling companion spoke fluent mandarin and spent hours conversing with Jacky's father about life in the area. The rooms are state of the art with nice beds, western toilets, and working hot water. The view of the cloud-filled valley from our second story room was breathtaking! The food is also terrific. We had 3 meals cooked for us by Jacky's parents and they were some of the best of the trip (Don't pass up a chance to sample the local black tea and coffee. Both are superb). I cannot recommend this place highly enough. We were sad to leave as we both felt as though we had been treated like family. If you are going to Yuanyang do not miss the chance to stay here!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a window that faces the valley. The views are breathtaking.

Jacky's Guesthouse can be a good choice. It is located in Pugaolaozhai Village,Duoyishu, where is one of the best places for terraces and sunrise. The most reason why I choose Jacky's was because of the location for trekking, the good English Jacky speaks.
We stepped in Sunny Guesthouse without booking in advance. Then they was no rooms available for us.And seemed the boss was not happy to receive unexpected clients. Then a very nice local village brought us to another guesthouse just 200 m from Sunny, surprisingly we didn't see it when came to Sunny. It turned out to be our good luck to be refused by Sunny. We were so nicely and warmly wecomed by Jacky and his mother.
What surprised us again was that Jacky speaks so good English, even some simple French. We found out later that Jacky have worked for Olivier Follmi,a very famous French photographer, for 4 years. And they traveled together to Asia,Milldle East, and even Europe, for 4 years. Nor wonder he speaks so good English.
The rooms here is so clean comfortable, with private western toilets. The most important thing for me was the food and the good breakfast, especially the Yunnan Coffee made by Jacky.
Having breakfast on the guesthouse terrace could be a nice choice if the weather good in the morning, accompanied by sunrise and the beautiful terraced fields just in front of the building.
Jacky's mobile number is [...] ,email : [...]
P.S. Jacky is specialized in trekking in this area, can be helpful for trek lovers.

Room Tip: There are two rooms on the second floor with bigger bathrooms and better view.

Jacky's Guesthouse opened up about 2-3 months ago and is right in the middle of Duoyishu village in Yuanyang County. I stayed there for two nights in December 2011 and I had a terrific stay in every respect.

First, instead of being an hour away in Xinjie, the guesthouse is in Duoyishu and borders the most magnificent of the rice terraces. I walked to the balcony on the fourth floor of the guesthouse to get a panoramic view of the terraces at sunrise. The terraces are literally right outside the guesthouse door and I also walked into the terraces to take some photographs.

Second, unlike what I've read about other accommodations in the area, Jacky's is spotless and state of the art. There are 8 double rooms which, while not luxurious, are simple, well-kept, reasonably priced and just what you'd hope for in a rural bed and breakfast. There are western toilets in the rooms. There are electric blankets for the beds if it's too cold. The dining area on the first floor doubles as a study or gathering area and it too is kept very clean. There are no televisions in the rooms or nightlife to speak of, but those aren't negatives in my mind.

Third, Jacky and his family are wonderful hosts. Jacky speaks fluent English. He was an assistant to a famous photographer Olivier Follmi and traveled the world for years in that role. He has great tips for the Yuanyang area, including what treks to take and where to go to avoid the tour groups. Because Jacky grew up in the area and has served as a local guide for many years (he is also a superb guide by the way) and speaks the Hani language, he can also tell you about upcoming market days or festivals. Through his travels, he also has a keen sense of what travelers expect during a stay, which is reflected in the high quality of the accommodations. Jacky's mother and cousin also prepare homemade Yunnan meals for a small price and the food is local and organic and very tasty. Jacky's mother in particular will heap extra portions on your plate at the end of the meal and make you feel right at home.

In short, I can't recommend Jacky's highly enough. I'm from the U.S. and I was a bit nervous about staying in Duoyishu itself but am very pleased to report that the guesthouse and the terraces themselves were a highlight of my six-week tour in China. There is no website but you can contact Jacky by cell phone at [--] or email at [--].
