This is by far one of the neatest places to check out. Go early for some good pictures while walking down the path. Late morning, by lunch time the path ways become very full of people and it is hard to get pictures with out any of them in your shot. Regardless check this place out. There is also a Temple to see and a beautiful garden created by a Japanese movie star. And it has some amazing views of the area.

The bamboo forest is interesting enough in itself. It is very easy to get to from the centre of Kyoto Kyoto train station - either by JR train or by metro. It's about 5 minutes walk from Saga- Arashiyama station (using our JR rail passes). It's worth walking to the very end of the street with the bamboo as it gets denser the further in you go.
What made this trip even better was a recommendation from a local to visit the Tenryu-ji temple gardens (not necessarily the shrine) 1 minute away. If you like Japanese gardens or indeed any gardens, you won't be disappointed. We visited in October and the leaves were starting to change colour which was gorgeous to look at. I'm sure blossom time would be wonderful too.

It was interesting to walk through a bamboo forest, when you aren’t used to it. Very crowded, though.

This 'landmark' was a complete let down. Sure the short stretch of actual bamboo forest was nice, but it's definitely not worthy of the status so many guidebooks and reviews give it. The area is heaving with construction, people, buildings, tacky shops - it is the definition of a tourist trap. Don't waste your time, there are so many better places to explore in fabulous Kyoto.

I went in December and it was very cold so I imagine there was much less people than when it’s warmer. The whole area by the bamboo forest is great to explore. You decide how long or how much you want to see in the forest
