We went to both the ocean side and the Port Phillips Bay side - they are close enough to go to both in you car. They are quite different. The bay is calm, warm, soft sand and shallow for some distance from the shore, but the beach is short and it's right on the road.
The ocean side is much more wild! steep steps (and a correspondingly steep walk back to your car) to enjoy fantastic views, big waves, sandy beaches with lots of tide pools. The only downside where the large "flies" that have quite the bit. The water was cool, but once you are in it it's lovely.
Watch the sun - even at 6pm you can burn.
Lots of food in town - try the continental on the main street.
