Tucked away up a long sweeping drive and just a minute from the Tamar Valley Railway Line at Calstock, The Bothy is a luxurious little apartment in a private area behind the owners' home. It is very well appointed with everything you need for a comfortable short stay. The village has two pubs, both of which are worth a visit, and the area is wonderful for discovering Cornish history, walking and bird watching.
The apartment has been carefully thought out with good quality decoration, furnishings and an excellent shower. It was extremely clean and very cosy with underfloor heating. We had fresh spring flowers on the table when we arrived, milk in the fridge and a packet of Cornish biscuits. A real treat!
The Bothy was a lovely, snug pad from which to do a weekends walking on Dartmoor, which is a short drive away, and to explore the beautiful Tamar Valley, which is right on its doorstep. The very best of the Cornwall/Devon border!
The building feels very private, but is still right in the villlage (close to the lovely pubs such as the Boot). The underfloor heating feels very luxurious and there is a little stove to light a wood fire. The kitchenette is well equipped, and the shower lovely and high pressure. And Patty and Rod who look after the building much of the time are really friendly.
Overall a really great stay- highly recommend.
We stayed at The Bothy from 10-14 September. It is a charming and tasteful restoration of a former gardener’s cottage in the beautiful grounds of a large mid-Victorian house. The sympathetic restoration retained the original character of the exterior and quaint cobbled courtyard: the inside has been decorated and fitted out to a high standard. The Bothy is very private and tranquil. It is located a few minutes’ walk from the centre of the village of Calstock which has a thriving arts community and usually something going on throughout the year. There are two pubs in the village which serve good food as well as traditional beers. There are also many walks in the area (eg Kit Hill, Cotehele to name just two) and the train station, linking Calstock to Plymouth, is a couple of minutes’ walk from the rear of the grounds, accessed by a private door to the footpath to the station. Although it is close, the train is not noisy. The owners, Malcolm and Lauren, were welcoming and helpful. All in all, the Bothy has much to commend it. It’s ideal for a secluded romantic getaway to a beautiful part of the world. We look forward to our next visit.
My wife & I were delighted to find this charming old Bothy brought right up to date. Lauren & Malcolm have made a wonderful job of saving this old potting shed & turning it into a charming 1 bed cottage. We used it as a base for a week whilst we explored Devon & Cornwall. The Bothy has been finished to a very high standard & sits in a huge garden to the main house, it even has its own gate access to the local train station of Calstock, how cool is that?

Wonderful stay at the cottage nestled within beautiful gardens. The hosts were warm, welcoming & very knowledgable on local history, culture, walks. The cottage itself is clean, tidy & comfortable with a little fireplace. Perfect accommodation for a romantic getaway, we will be back
