When I was asked where I would like to celebrate my 50th birthday there was no competition!! I've been going to Okel Tor on and off for around 17 years although this was my first time in the Smithy. The area is beautiful and peaceful. Every season takes your breath away, be it the wildlife on your doorstep, the cacophony of colour in Autumn or just the relaxing atmosphere of the place. It's a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside and only a short 30 minutes to the coast. Calstock itself is only a 10 minute walk away with two good pubs serving excellent food. The village shop has recently closed but there are supermarkets in Callington and Tavistock, and a couple of convenience stores in Gunnislake, plus Tavistock has some great outlets for local produce. The Smithy itself is clean, plenty of room and has very good amenities. There's a very comfortable bed sofa in the living area, which we used on a couple of evenings when we wanted to laze and watch TV. Views across the Tamar valley are breathtaking and my favourite part of the day here has always been to have breakfast on the porch. The two things I would recommend you do when you go here are (1) when you've arrived and unpacked just stop and listen ... The silence is amazing; and (2) if you get a cloud free night look at the stars. Can't wait to go back!!
The cottage had all that we needed, including log-burning stove to brighten a rainy evening. It was comfortable and clean. Nick (the owner) was friendly and helpful. The cottage is on the site of an old mine, with lovely woodland walks along the river Tamar and an interesting history. There was peace and quiet with a postcard view over the river and wooded valley. And the surrounding area in Cornwall (fabulous coastal walks) and Devon (dartmoor especially) is easily accessible and great for those holidaying with dogs. But be prepared for rain. And for heavy traffic to get in and out of South-West England.
Our stay in the Smithy at Okel Tor was excellent in all respects.
It's something to which we look forward to doing again. Many thanks.
The Smithy is set in a quiet, wooded area with fabulous views. Situated near the river Tamar with great walks, one along the river into the village of Calstock where there are two pubs, both serving excellent food. Also a wonderful ice cream parlour, Valenties. Unfortunately, the village shop had closed, but there is a shop near the petrol station in Gunnislake, a 5 min drive away, which stocks everything you need.
The Smithy is well stocked and very comfortable. The verandah was ideal for drying off the dog after his dips in the river and also for sitting out in the evening.
Spent a very restful 10 days at the Smithy with wonderful views over the Tamar Valley towards Devon. The cottage was very well equipped. Didn't have to use the car every day which was great. Plenty of useful information from Nick. The only comment I would make is that the oven could do with an upgrade!Hope to visit again.
A perfect retreat overlooking the River Tamar. Lots of interesting walks nearby for you and your dog especially if you feel adventurous and catch the local train to more distant footpaths. The accommodation was perfect and even had a dog washing down area for muddy days. On a rainy day a visit to Buckland Abbey is a must with additional 3 mile woodland walk for those with walking boots or wellies. Cotehele House is walkable from The Smithy but choose a sunny day to appreciate the interior.
We would recommend this holiday retreat for those who enjoy the peace and quite of countryside.
What an incredible place to stay.... we had a great time! The location and accommodation are fantastic, and Nick, the owner, couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. There are lovely walks in the area, with very interesting history, and the food at the local pub, The Boot Inn, is amazing! I would definitely go back, and recommend to others.
