“Great value hotel with unforgettable service”
Reviewed 26 March 2012

The Hotel Laxnes was a fantastic base for our trip to Iceland - set 30 mins bus ride out of Reykjavik, but the scenery makes up for it and right at the start of the Golden Circle route. We had fantastic views from our bedrooms windows/balcony of mountains and countryside. The room was basic but large and clean. The televison only had 2 channels - both in Icelandic but as we were out all day and most evenings, it wasn't an issue for us. Downstairs there's a dining area, bar and a lounge area with a chess board and pool table, which is free. There is also free pc/internet use in the reception and free Wi-Fi in the bedrooms. Breakfast is brilliant - salad, meats, eggs, tuna mayonaise, waffles, cereals - a really good selection for a continential breakfast and most days we didn't require lunch as it filled us up till dinner. The best thing about the Laxnes though was Shaun the manager. Shaun is someone who has worked in the industry a long time and lives to make his hotel guests stays as good as they can possibly be. He is without doubt, the most friendly, fun and helpful hotel manager I have come across - nothing was too much trouble from arranging airport transfers, booking us onto tours, making last minute dinner reservations, recommending good things to see and do to giving us discounts for nearby restaurants. On top of that, Shaun is so friendly towards everyone and takes a genuine interest in people. The owner was also lovely, managing the bar in the evenings and coming and knocking on everyone's doors if the northern lights appeared so guests wouldn't miss them. Would recommend the Laxnes to anyone looking to stay in the Reykjavik area - the bus is cheap - 350 isk pp each way (you need EXACT change - you can get this at the garage opposite the hotel) and the stops are right outside the hotel. All the companies operating tours pick up from the Laxnes and there is also plenty of car parking spaces for those hiring a car. We will definitely be back!

This hotel certainly ticked all our boxes. Firstly before we travelled I emailed the hotel several times for various information, my emails were responded to immediately, and I was sent suggestions on excursions. They kindly arranged a transfer for us from the airport, and provisionally booked our trips, which were amazing. We booked the Golden Circle, South Coast and Northern lights. All picked us up from the hotel.

Our room was very comfortable and lovely and warm, I woke up at 1.30, looked out of window and saw the Northern lights. In fact a couple of nights later we also spotted them while standing in the car park, they are unpredictable, but thankfully Iceland has loads more to offer other than just seeing the lights.

Having Wi-Fi was really useful in the room, and the use of the computer in reception another bonus. This hotel is very reasonably priced and excellent value for money.

Shaun is a great manager and a credit to the hotel, all the staff made us feel welcome and nothing was to much trouble, and we take this opportunity to say thank you for a great holiday!

We will 100% be visiting Iceland again, and definately returning to the Laxnes as we enjoyed it so much.

We stayed at Hotel Laxnes for 3 nights in March and had a great time. The rooms were nice and warm and quite large too - not that we actually spent much time in them as there was so much to do!
Plenty to eat at breakfast and those waffles were just the thing to start a very busy day.
Shaun the manager was so helpful advising on how to spend a spare few hours before going back to the airport and booking trips for us.
We saw the Northern Lights faintly over the hotel on the first night although they weren't out for long. However, we did see them the next night on a trip and they were totally amazing and went on for hours!
This was our first visit to iceland and will definitely be back next year and because the hotel is so cheap will probably stay there again!

Having read the reviews we were not disappointed by this hotel. We received a very warm welcome. The rooms were very clean and spacious. (The only negatives were two skylights missing a blind and no tea/coffee). Breakfast is a basic continental (plus waffles). There is a wonderful bakery just up the road behind Kronan supermarket that is a must visit and the White Knight bar is smart and friendly. (It is a sports bar but don't let thet put you off ladies as its very cosy and candlelit) It does good food with 10% discount for hotel residents.
Hotel is ideally located for doing the golden circle tour and Reykjavik just 15mins drive away.
Seeing the northern lights was definitely a huge highlight! We have the owner (Ali) to thank for this as we were in the White Knight bar when the lights appeared right above the hotel earlier than expected at 8.45pm. Ali rang the manager to alert us to go outside and he also ran round the hotel knocking on everyones doors! Just one example of his eagerness for his guests to have a wonderful stay! The lights faded after just a 5minute spectacular show but we headed just 10mins up route 36 into the hills away from light pollution and were treated to another show about 11pm. We were very fortunate as there was heightened solar activity on our last night. Prior to that we had only seen a faint green band of light across the sky.

Room Tip: Our room was number 11 on the top floor with great views towards the mountains

Recently stayed at the Hotel Laxnes. It is good basic clean accomodation, ideally located to see the sights, in particular the Golden Circle. The hotel itself is more of a motel and was very quiet which suited us.

As other reviewers have said, the rooms were warm - a bit too warm during the night. The entry door was half glass without a cover so at night the rooms were never dark - however after a day of sightseeing it didn't keep us awake.

Breakfast was continental but there was a good selection. We had our own car but after a day touring we couldn't be bothered heading into Reykavik so just ate locally - there was a pub called the White Knight (next to the supermarket) which served good food and we ate there on a couple of occasions. For starters and main course plus 2 drinks, the cost was around £30 (approx $45) so basically it was around the same cost as eating out in the UK. There's also a KFC across the road.

We had been keeping an eye on the aurora forecast and hoping for some breaks in the clouds. We had a lucky break on one of the nights so headed out to the Thingveller road (which is dark after you leave the lights of Mosfellsbaer) and just parked the car in a layby and set up the camera and tripod and were lucky!

We will go back to Iceland and woudl recommend Hotel Laxnes.

We stayed at the Hotel Laxnes this week and had an amazing time mostly due to Shaun the manager who makes the difference between a hotel stay and a brilliant holiday. Great advice Shaun and thanks for arranging our car. The hotel is perfectly placed to see the Northern Lights and if we had managed to stay awake we would have seen them as others at the hotel did. Unfortunately after seeing so much of Iceland that day we were completely worn out and fell asleep! A great reason to return which we surely will.
We stayed in Reykjavik for our last night as we were planing a serious night out but as there was good sightings of the lights forecast we ended up driving past the Laxnes on our way to the national park so wished we had just stayed there. Thanks Shaun you really go the extra mile.

Room Tip: The rooms with a mountain view are great to see the Northern LIghts from.

Yes, as the other reviews all point out this hotel is slightly out of Reykjavik, but in my view that wasn't a problem. I pre-booked an airport transfer to the hotel, and the bus to central Reykjavik also stops right outside the hotel. If you're coming to Iceland then you're not going to stay in your hotel - you're going to get out and about to explore this fantastic country (or at least you should!!) In which case you're going to have to either hire a car or book yourself on one or more excursions - (there is plenty to see and do no matter what season you travel), and all the tour companies that I used will collect you from, and drop you back to the hotel, so it really is no problem with the fact that the hotel is out of Reykjavik.

Shaun was very helpful in organising things and offering helpful information.

Nice buffet breakfast.

All in all I would recommend the hotel.
