We stayed at the OLD THEATRE in January ( 2013 ) and were very happy with the choice .
Shaxi is the true gem of Southwest China ...
A temple , a school and still function as a theatre , this little hotel is a genuine treasure in a beautiful valley , and very close top the fabulous Shaxi Town .
The hotel rent - ( for very little money ) bicycles so you can visit Shaxi , only 15 minutes away . They can also arrange for transport to your next destination as well as to explore the fantastic temples near by .
We found that Shaxi is the only original old town in one area that is full of reconstituted places like the well known Dali and Lijiang .
A place not to be missed ...

nicely 'renewed' inn which was originally a school, with a temple fronting the place.
however, its 15 minutes bicycle ride away from Shaxi town (or 30 minutes walk away). the public bus will drop you at Shaxi town, so unless you are very fit, its a long walk to the inn and back again to town for sight seeing.

the inn has all modern facilities (hot water, wifi), and is a green hotel, with solar energy, etc.
however, its noisy before meal times as you can hear the staff chopping, cutting, talking from the kitchen.

the service staff and manager are very hospitable and welcome you with ginger cookies and tea.

the chinese breakfast served was rice noodles soup with fried egg, fried potato and fried crabstick, which was tasteless and oily. it was served with a small dish of chili. perhaps it will taste better with the chili but i can't take spicy food, so didnt try it

the rooms are not good with sound insulation as you can hear neighbours walking around with the wooden floor creaking. luckily my neighbours were quiet and slept early

if i return, will stay in town.

Dear Mr. Jun, thank you for your visit with us. We are indeed a 15 minute bike ride (or 5 minutes by car) from town, which guests can see from the custom Google Map on the Location page of our website http://www.shaxichina.com/location.htm . Part of the charm of our inn is that we are in a small village, surrounded by rice and vegetable fields, not shops and tourist attractions. Staying at the Old Theatre Inn is a chance to experience village life, such as our ladies in the kitchen taking fresh-cut vegetables from our fields or organic eggs from our neighbor and preparing them just for you. It also means an occasional squeak from the original wood floors in our guestrooms. For those who prefer modern Chinese hotels, there are sure to be more and more in Shaxi, though we will always strive to preserve the traditional authenticity of our guest experience, while maintaining the highest levels of comfort and service.
Sincerely, the Old Theatre Inn family

Old Theatre Inn is affiliated to the Yangshuo Guest House in Yangshuo and it shows. This place is a gem in a beautiful valley. The old town of Shaxi is 15 minutes away by bicycle. We stayed here for 4 nights and found our stay to be absolutely wonderful. The rooms are big (so are the beds). Next to the door of your room (which is part of a former village school) there is a box with slippers to use while inside. The location is idyllic. This is the place where you can get away from it all. Staff is very friendly and the food is superb. The view from the terrace overlooking the rice fields is to die for. Reading a book and watching country life never fails to impress. A man has a goat that follows him home. Three old men walk their donkeys. Every evening the irrigation system is checked. I would prefer to keep this place to myself. But that would be selfish.

This is one of the most unique places you will ever stay. It has an old theatre that survived the cultural revolution, and the outbuildings have been converted into 5 bedrooms. Unfortunately when we arrived they weren't expecting us. The previous manager, Mr Wu , has left and did not keep a note of all the bookings he had made.
If you are going I recommend that you check first to make sure your booking has not been taken by someone else.
The hotel is amazing and you can sit on the verandah with lovely home made food watching the work going on in the paddy fields around you. The girls who work in the hotel work in the fields as well! At night you will just have the frogs for company

We really enjoyed our stay at the Old Theatre Inn and would highly recommend it. The building itself is wonderful and has been sympathetically restored. The rooms around the courtyard were very comfortable. The staff are very welcoming, in an understated way, and happy to help including with onward travel arrangements. We had two dinners in the Inn, and enjoyed a tasty and plentiful array of local dishes. Nice that purified water and tea are freely available.

We planned our trip to coincide with the Friday market in Shaxi, and seeing that was a real highlight of our trip. There was a real sense of occasion with people pouring in from the surrounding villages. Even on a non market day, you could happily spend a day pottering around Shaxi, which is a short walk, cycle ride away on relatively quiet roads.

The valley is unspoilt and peaceful for now, partly because it takes a few hours to get there from either Dali or Lijiang.

Only slight issue was that the water in the shower in our room was either boiling or freezing, no in between.

Dear Alice, we're so happy you enjoyed the Old Theatre and got a chance to see the best of Shaxi with us. We apologize that our water regulator wasn't working properly during your stay. We've since ordered a new one which will fix the problem. We have also since renovated all of our guest rooms so when you come back some day, you'll find an even more comfortable experience with us.
Safe travels!

Shaxi is a welcome relief from the hustle & bustle of towns like Dali and Lijiang, and for now there are relatively few visitors, and certainly not the throngs of tourists that you'll encounter in those 2 aforementioned places. And the Old Theatre Inn is the perfect place to unwind. At first we weren't sure if we should have stayed in one of the guesthouses in the old town itself (for closer access to cafes/restaurants), but after having spent 4 days here, we agreed that we made the right choice. To be sure, you'll need to bike 15 mins to get into town (but it's a nice ride on flat roads), but I recommend instead having dinner at the guesthouse itself. Mr Wu's wife is a fantastic cook and her meals were the best that we had on this trip.

This is one of the most unique places we have ever stayed at. A gorgeous restored temple theatre takes centerpiece at this inn. There are only 5 rooms and they are all comfortable and clean with modern bathrooms and huge showers. The owner, Mr Wu speaks amazing English and is so helpful and hospitable. His wife is a fantastic cook so the food here is superb, a true feast every night on the freshest of produce.
The inn is in Duan village about 15 minutes bike ride from Shaxi. Mr Wu will help with arranging taxis or giving directions. It is set in one of the most beautiful valleys in China. We were there in spring and everywhere we looked were golden fields of rape seed flowers. We hired bikes and cycled around the valley and into Shaxi, very quiet roads.
Fantastic value for a real gem of a place.
Chill out, recharge and feast like kings!
