My wife and I spent two nights beginning of September 2010 here, while on honeymoon in China. This is definitely #1 on our list of places we had enjoyed. This is one of the few Gems still left in China. It is rustic, cozy and peaceful.
Mr Wu, an English teacher and his wife do the utmost to make your stay comfortable and memorable. Mr Wu, loves his calligraphy and can spend some enjoyable time guiding you into this magical world. Ask of him to play you something from his classical Chinese music collection, the Gu Qin is great, and you'll truely find peace of mind! He can guide you to see the fantastic Buddhist grottoes in the valley and take you into Shaxi for the enjoyable Friday Market. His wife prepares a mouth watering breakfast and dinner which change daily.
The Dragonfly is situated in the villages ~200 year old temple and has 5 double-bed rooms. The village itself is situated 3km from Shaxi Town in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains and hills on both sides. The valley has a river that runs through its middle and a staggering amount of rice paddies.
The Dragonfly is picturesque, a lovely place to spend a couple of days relaxing or treking and taking in what's left of rural China.

My wife and I stayed here on a personal recommendation from an American friend who lives in Yunnan, and who has stayed here a number of times. She told us it was a very special retreat for her in her busy life. She was absolutely right!
This beautiful building, built in the early 1700's even has its own theatre with raised stage in the inner courtyard where travellers on the old tea and salt roads were entertained.
Mr Wu's English is excellent and he is a great source of information about the area. Mrs Wu's cooking, as mentioned in other reviews, is outstanding. She even cooked special dishes for my wife, who is allergic to gluten.
The rooms are simple but clean, with Western WC in the shower-rooms and hot water on tap. The situation of the guesthouse is simply outstanding. We arrived just as the rice harvest, in the surrounding fields, was being collected by hand and brought in by mule. With the mellow sunlight, it was like a scene from a Van Gogh landscape painting.
The peace and relative solitude is welcome, and getting into Shaxi itself is not a problem; you can either cycle in on the guesthouse bicycles, or, as we did most of the time, walk along the small footpath that links the town with a couple of smaller villages along the way. It's like walking in a land that time has forgotten. Magical.

The Dragonfly is the perfect remedy to the crass commercialism that is taking over Lijiang and Shangri-la. Even the centre of Shaxi is slowly heading that way, but just a couple of kilometres upriver, Dragonfly manages to retain its natural, rustic charm.
Highlights include the fluent English speaking owner, his wife's delicious home cooking and the fact that this is probably the only guesthouse in China that has its very own temple in the courtyard.
The rooms are simple but charming, and the Dragonfly makes an excellent base for exploring one of the most beautiful valleys in China. Start off with a bit of truffle hunting in the oak groves up behind the village, and then head across to the Pear Orchard Temple on the other side of the valley. From here you can check out all the usual guide book entries such as the Grottoes at Shibaoshan and the bridge at Mapinguan.
Once you arrive back at the Dragonly for dinner, ask Mrs Wu to fry up some skirret, a root vegetable that has been largely forgotten in Europe, but was a staple long before carrots and sugar beet became popular fare.
I have been back to the Dragonfly at least three times in a row now, and the friends that I take with me are always equally as impressed as I am with this little gem.

Ok. First. Getting here is easy bus ride from either Lijiang or Dali area. Cool views from bus before you arrive in Jinchaun, which is very close to Duan Village where Dragonfly is located. Second. Wu Yunxin, his wife, and daughter are super kind and sweet and make sure you feel comfortable at this really cool, beautiful chinese monastery turned guesthouse. Third. Mrs. Yunxin makes the BEST food I had in all of Yunnan. I am not kidding. Her food is amazing, especially after a long days hiking. That being said, Mr. Yunxin can advise you with different hiking options and can even provide you with a guide to very cool spots, such as a small, welcoming village 3 hours hike or so where you can hang out with sweet locals and eat some food and play silly games with the kids who are the coolest. ALSO--really amazing hiking to ancient buddhist temples like Shi Bao (I think that's the name), that have been chilling in the side of the mountain forever.

The rooms are really cozy. Very clean, hot water, everything you need really. Really cool enclosed courtyard where you can relax and read or do some writing or look up at the sky or borrow Mr. Yunxin's laptop for a reluctant look at your email or try to change your ticket because you want to stay longer which is what I wish I could have done. ALSO-super affordable. I think breakfast, dinner, room, and wine was around $25/night. Make sure to take care of your guide ($). Uh, yeah.

I would recommend this place for everyone. Solo traveler, couple or families. I mean, it has something that everyone can share. That being said, totally come here with a cute babe that likes to hike. It's romantic as long as you are not addicted to the 4 Seasons Hotel, which it's not.

Bring a book.

Thank you Mr. Yunxin. Unforgettable.

The intimate Dragonfly Guesthouse is amongst the most memorable places my wife and I have stayed at over decades of travel around the world. It may not be the height of luxury but the atmospheric surroundings (the five room inn was formerly a Chinese temple), the lovely setting (a couple of kilometers outside Shaxi, overlooking a valley of rice fields surrounded by forested mountains), the warm hospitality of our English-speaking host, Mr. Yunxin Wu, the delicious fare prepared by his charming wife, Jipin, and the ridiculously low room-rate (each room has its own shower, wash basin and Western-style toilet) all combined to make our visit an unforgettable experience. Mr. Wu has extensive knowledge of the local area and he served as our guide for the three days we spent here. Besides the customary tour of Shaxi’s old town and its colourful Friday morning market he drove us one day to the temples and sacred grottoes high in the Shibao hills, and on the next we hiked up a valley to Pishamen Tianwang Si, a temple theatrically perched at the base of a steep rock outcrop (an excursion that would also be of interest of bird-watchers). Another party of guests, who had booked an overnight stay at the Dragonfly, reluctantly departed the following morning wishing they could have remained longer — which echoed our own feelings precisely.

I spent three days at the Dragonfly guesthouse which is situated in a very small village (Duan) near Shaxi. Mr. Wu, the owner, speaks very good english and had emailed me the adress in chinese as well as his phone number, so it was easy to get there by taxi (60RMB) when I arrived at the bus station in Shaxi. There are five rooms, each with an little backyard. The rooms are quite small but confortable and very clean. The surroundings are absolutely beautiful! You can walk around or rent a bicycle from the guesthouse (20RMB) and explore the countryside. Mrs Wu is a fantastic cook and we had all our meals at the guesthouse. The owners are very kind and helpful. The Dragonfly is situated in a region that is not overtouristy which is a blessing after Lijiang and Dali... Shaxi is situated roughly in the middle of those two cities, so it is easy to stop by during a trip to Yunnan. For three days at the guesthouse, all our meals, the location of two bicycles for a day and a huge laundry, it costed us 800RMB which is a fantastic value. I highly recommend the Dragonfly guesthouse and I hope I can go back some day!
