My husband and I went down to Devon for a 2 night stay. we chose Bark house as we were taking our little Dog with us and it appeared that Bark house would welcome small dogs.

Both Mel and martin lived up to other customer reviews as good hosts, they made us feel very welcome and dudley too. Lovely pot of Tea served with some delicious cake when we got there.
We had an evening meal cooked by martin on the first night which was nice.

Rooms were clean and tidy but some updating is required both for decor and furniture.
This however did not spoil any of our stay.

The sad thing was it rained nearly all the time we were there, this is not of course anything to do with Bark House.
Both hosts were delightful and chatty.

Would I recommend it YES would stay again YES.

Room Tip: Room 1 with bay window or room 6 big room

We stayed overnight at The Bark House and I can honestly say we received the friendliest and most genuine welcome I can remember at any hotel or B & B. We greatly enjoyed a freshly prepared afternoon tea in the very comfortable lounge (where there's an interesting range of books on the shelves). Unlike some more pretentious places where we've had tea, Martin and Melanie really seemed to care that everything was satisfactory (it certainly was). Our bedroom was clean and bright with a very comfortable bed and a good en suite. A generous breakfast was served in the attractive dining room and most of the ingredients were locally sourced. This is a small hotel, describing itself as "cottage style", and has plenty of individual character. Although it's on a main road it was very quiet at night and the setting is really attractive, set amongst wooded slopes, and there's a grassy area just opposite where you can sit and enjoy the evening sun. My only very small quibble is that some of the bedroom furniture, although perfectly adequate, was just a little too far on the "shabby chic" side to make the best impression. Overall, highly recommended if you prefer individuality and friendliness to somewhere smart and impersonal.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 and 6 are at the ends of the building with bay windows providing extra light and more views.

My boyfriend & I stayed at the Bark House for 1 night but from the first minute to the last we wished we had more days..
Melanie welcomed us at the door and as soon as we left our things at the room, we had tea & an amazing piece of cake at the beautiful lounge.
Later we had a wonderful dinner ,cooked by Martin,at the lovely small restaurant.(Do yourselves a favour and leave some room for Melanie 's amazing desserts!)
Breakfast was perfect too!
Last but not least the room was wonderful, exactly what I have dreamed of for a countryside escape!
But since a picture counts for a thousant words I suggest you take a look....
Melanie ,Martin thank you for your warm hospitality,
we wish you the best!

We were given a 2 night break voucher, decided we didn't want to venture too far afield (we live in South Devon) and so chose the Bark House. The sunny weather on arrival bode well and so it proved. Martin greeted us warmly, showed us to our room and offered tea in the lounge when we were ready. Although the decor in the bedroom was a touch tired, it was comfortable and spotlessly clean. We immediately felt relaxed and decided to book dinner on the first night. Our initial concern that £22 for a 2 course meal in a guest house was just a tad expensive soon dissipated - the food was superbly cooked and the portions generous, with mountains of fresh veg - so good that we had no hesitation in booking dinner for the second night, which was equally excellent! Coffee/drinks in the lounge with good conversation after dinner completed a wonderful break. Martin and Mel have the knack of immediately making one feel comfortable and freely offered useful information on places in the vicinity to visit. We will return!

We were given a voucher for a night away with a gourmet dinner and as we both like Exmoor and had read so many good reviews, we decided on Bark House, it was not a mistake. When we arrived we were met by Martin who carried our suitcase up to our room and advised us that when we were ready to come down to the lounge and a tray of tea would be brought in to us. Absolute bliss sitting in front of a log fire with tea and cake! The dinner was very good too. We had goats cheese souffle as starter then I had sea bass and summer pudding for dessert and my husband had duck breast and then kiwi and passion fruit pavlova. The portions are large and delicious. Wines and drinks are very reasonable. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and far superior to a lot of the big hotels. The bed was very comfortable so we had a very good nights sleep. Martin was on his own so was kept quite busy but was still the perfect host. We definitely will go back.
